OP Pohjola
OP Pohjola is a motor third-party liability insurance for the FI market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Claims must be reported promptly to Pohjola Insurance or its representative electronically, by phone, or by post using the claims form. Compensation for traffic injuries is paid to the injured party directly from the at-fault vehicle's MTPL insurer. Pohjola Autohätäpalvelu (010 253 0012) operates 24/7 for roadside assistance and in many cases a claims decision can be issued during the same call.
Geographic scope
FI
Valid in all EEA member states; valid as liability insurance in Green Card convention countries outside EEA based on the Green Card issued by the insurer or without Green Card where not required; compensation in non-EEA Green Card countries determined by the law of the country of accident; also covers transit through non-EEA areas on a direct journey between two EEA states where another EEA-registered vehicle is involved.
Unique selling points
- Starting bonus of 40% for cars and motorcycles so new policyholders benefit from a discount from day one without needing a claims-free history.
- Bonus protection (bonusturva) activates after just 2 years at the maximum 80% bonus level, meaning one covered claim will not reduce your bonus at all.
- Green Card can be printed instantly and at any time via the op.fi online service, eliminating the need to contact customer service before international travel.
- OP owner-customers earn OP bonuses on their insurance premiums and can receive up to approximately 10% discount when holding policies across three product categories.
- Seasonal pricing (vuodenaikahinnoittelu) for motorcycles, mopeds, ATVs and snowmobiles means premiums automatically reflect the months when the vehicle is actually used, with refunds for periods off the road.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury liability
Covered
Personal injury compensation under Finnish MTPL law (Liikennevakuutuslaki 460/2016) has no upper limit. Covers medical costs, loss of earnings, permanent disability, and other personal injury losses for all parties in a traffic accident, including the driver and passengers of the insured vehicle. Compensation is determined under Finnish law or the law of the country where the accident occurred if outside Finland but within the EEA or Green Card territory.
Property damage liability
Covered
Property damage (esinevahinko) is covered up to EUR 5,000,000 per at-fault insurance policy per accident as prescribed by Finnish MTPL law. Covers damage to third-party vehicles, property, and objects caused by the insured vehicle in traffic. Does not cover damage to the insured vehicle itself or property owned by the vehicle's owner/keeper.
Legal defence
Excluded
Legal defence costs (oikeudenkäyntikulut) are not covered under the mandatory MTPL (Liikennevakuutus). Legal defence cover is available only as part of the voluntary Kasko (Isokasko or Osakasko) with a maximum reimbursement of EUR 10,000 and a deductible of 15% of costs, minimum EUR 200 per claim event.
Green Card (international coverage certificate)
Covered
The MTPL policy is valid in all EEA states and Switzerland. In Green Card convention countries outside the EEA, the policy is valid as liability insurance based on the Green Card issued by Pohjola, or without a Green Card where one is not required. Compensation in these countries is determined by the law of the country where the accident occurred. Coverage is also valid in non-EEA transit areas on a direct journey between two EEA states. The Green Card can be printed by the policyholder via the op.fi online service.
Roadside assistance
Excluded
Roadside assistance (Autopalvelu / hinaus) is not covered under the mandatory MTPL policy. It is available as part of the voluntary Kasko: included in Isokasko (for motorcycle and motorhome) and available as an optional add-on in Osakasko. Pohjola Autohätäpalvelu operates 24/7 at 010 253 0012 but charges apply unless the customer also holds a qualifying Kasko.
Driver personal injury
Covered
The driver of the insured vehicle is covered for personal injury (henkilövahinko) under the MTPL policy as prescribed by Finnish law (Liikennevakuutuslaki 460/2016). Bodily injury compensation for the driver has no upper limit. This covers medical costs, loss of earnings, and other personal injury losses. The driver's own vehicle damage is not covered.
Passenger personal injury
Covered
Personal injuries sustained by passengers of the insured vehicle are covered under the MTPL policy with no upper limit, as prescribed by Finnish law. The policy also covers injury claims from occupants of other vehicles involved in the accident. A claim may be submitted to the insurer of any vehicle involved in the accident.
Key conditions
territorial_scope
The policy is valid in all EEA member states (including Switzerland per the product guide). In Green Card convention countries outside the EEA, the policy is valid as liability insurance on the basis of the Green Card issued by Pohjola, or without a Green Card where one is not required. Compensation in non-EEA Green Card countries is determined by the law of the country where the accident occurred. The policy also covers accidents caused by the insured vehicle in non-EEA transit areas on a direct journey between two EEA states where another EEA-registered vehicle is involved. Special conditions apply for Russia, Belarus, Iran, Tunisia, and Morocco.
green_card_rules
The Green Card is issued by Pohjola Insurance and enables the policy to operate as liability insurance in Green Card convention countries outside the EEA. The Green Card can be printed by the policyholder at any time via the op.fi online service. It must be carried as a printout — displaying it on a mobile device is not sufficient. If the policyholder is not the registered owner or keeper of the vehicle, a power of attorney from the owner is also required for taking the vehicle abroad.
driver_restrictions
The policy is issued on a per-vehicle basis for private individuals. The vehicle must be owned or kept by the policyholder. The primary user of the vehicle must be registered as the keeper and the owner as the owner in the vehicle register. Providing false information about the owner, keeper, or user may result in compensation being reduced or denied entirely. Use of a proxy registrant (bulvaani) is expressly prohibited.
claim_notification_deadline
A traffic claim that may lead to a compensation claim must be reported to Pohjola Insurance or its representative without undue delay after the policyholder becomes aware of it, electronically, by phone, or by post using the claims form. Under the Motor Liability Insurance Act, a compensation claim must be submitted to the insurer within three years of the claimant becoming aware of the damage and its consequences, and in any case within ten years of the occurrence of the damage.
bonus_malus_rules
The bonus system applies to private individuals' MTPL policies for passenger cars, vans, motorhomes, lorries, buses, and motorcycles. The starting bonus for cars (policies started from 1 June 2017) is 40% (bonus class 5); maximum bonus is 80% (bonus class 17). Bonus is formed based on the policyholder's personal insurance and claims history stored in the shared insurer database. Bonus history is not transferable to another person or from one vehicle to another. A bonus protection (bonusturva) applies once the policyholder has held 80% bonus for at least 2 consecutive years — one covered claim will not reduce the bonus. The vehicle must have been in traffic for at least 120 days (cars) or 90 days (motorcycles) in a policy period for the bonus to increase. The bonus system does not apply to exempt-from-registration vehicles or museum vehicles.
