Overview
Alfa Vienna Insurance Group Biztosító Zrt. is one of Hungary's most historically established insurers, with roots tracing back to 1949 as the Állami Biztosító. It was privatized in 1992 under Aegon, and in 2020-2021 Aegon N.V. sold its central and eastern European businesses to Austria's Vienna Insurance Group (VIG), with the Hungarian entity trading as Alfa Biztosító since 1 August 2023. It offers a broad portfolio of motor, property, life, pension, health, travel and corporate insurance products, and the Hungarian State also holds a minority stake through VIG's local holdings.

Regulatory updates
In September 2024, the MNB concluded a comprehensive on-site supervisory review of Alfa VIG covering the period from November 2020, finding deficiencies in motor and home insurance claims records, extended warranty and hypermarket group insurance disclosures, pension insurance reserve/surplus-crediting practices, product governance, and complaint handling; the MNB imposed a combined fine of approximately HUF 97 million (HUF 49 million supervisory plus HUF 48 million consumer-protection) with a remediation deadline of 30 November 2024. In a Budapest court ruling around May 2025, a case concerning Alfa's whole-life risk insurance product (Alfa Gondoskodás WG-02) was decided. In November 2025, Alfa announced it would reduce account-maintenance fees on certain unit-linked life and pension products from 1 January 2026, in order to comply with the MNB's product-oversight-and-governance (POG) recommendation on yield thresholds. Alfa also updated its OKÉ home insurance policy terms effective 15 January 2026 and again from 1 June 2026.
