Poland

Coverage applies in Poland and, on a reciprocal basis, in territories of countries whose national bureaux are signatories to the Multilateral Agreement (EU member states, EFTA states, Andorra, and Serbia). Green Card extends cover to additional signatory countries.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The MTPL policy covers events occurring in Poland. On a reciprocal basis it also covers events in countries whose national bureaux are signatories to the Multilateral Agreement: all EU member states, EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland), Andorra, and Serbia. The Green Card, included in the OC package, extends cover to other Multilateral Agreement signatory countries not already covered by statute (e.g. Ukraine, Albania, North Macedonia, Moldova).

Green card rules

The Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate) is included in the UNIQA OC package and issued together with the policy. It is valid for a minimum of 15 days and a maximum of 12 months and automatically terminates when the underlying OC contract expires or is dissolved. The driver must carry the Green Card document abroad and present it to control authorities on demand. The guarantee sum applicable is the higher of the minimum required by the country of the event or the sum stated in the OC policy. UNIQA has the right of recourse against the driver if the Green Card was used after termination of the OC contract.

Driver restrictions

Coverage is excluded for damage caused while the vehicle was driven by a person without a valid driving licence, or by a person under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, psychotropic substances, substitute substances, or new psychoactive substances, or under the influence of prescription medication that, according to the manufacturer, impairs driving ability. UNIQA retains the right of recourse against such a driver for compensation paid out. UNIQA does not apply an additional excess or premium loading for young or inexperienced drivers on the AC product; the OC terms follow statutory provisions.

Claim notification deadline

After an accident the insured party (Green Card holder) must notify UNIQA immediately of any event covered under the policy. For the underlying MTPL, Polish statutory law governs notification timelines. UNIQA must be notified promptly of any court proceedings initiated by the injured party. The insured must not admit liability or make any commitments to claimants without UNIQA's prior consent.

Bonus-malus rules

Bonus-malus classes are determined by the insured's claim history under Polish law and recorded in the Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny (UFG) database. UNIQA offers an optional Discount Protection Clause (Klauzula ochrony zniżek) available as a paid add-on to the OC policy: if one OC claim occurs during the policy period, it is not factored into the premium for the next renewal period, thus preserving the existing no-claims discount class. If two or more claims occur, only the first claim is disregarded and the subsequent claims affect the premium.
