Key conditions
Territorial scope
The insurance is valid on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and all countries whose national insurers bureau is a member of the Green Card system. Coverage also extends to third countries when damage is caused to persons from an EU Member State.
Green card rules
A Green Card certificate is issued with every MTPL policy at no additional cost. It extends coverage validity to all Green Card system member countries and confirms that the holder has valid MTPL insurance meeting the mandatory minimum liability limits of the visited country.
Driver restrictions
The policy covers the owner of the vehicle specified in the policy as well as any other person legally using the vehicle. The insurer has the right of recourse against the driver in cases of intentional damage, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, refusal to submit to an alcohol or drug test, driving without a valid licence, or driving a technically unroadworthy vehicle.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder must notify the insurer in writing within 7 working days of learning about the occurrence of a covered event. Claims can be reported online via the UNIQA website, by calling 0700 111 50, or in person at any UNIQA branch office.
Bonus-malus rules
A statutory bonus-malus system for MTPL has been introduced in Bulgaria effective from the end of December 2023 with full implementation continuing through 2026. Drivers without at-fault claims receive premium discounts (bonus) while drivers with at-fault accidents are charged higher premiums (malus). The bonus-malus class is determined based on traffic violations and at-fault claim history recorded in the Guarantee Fund central register.
