Key conditions
Territorial scope
Valid in all EEA member states and Switzerland; damage is compensated according to the law of the country where it occurred, or under Finnish motor liability law if that provides better cover. Also valid in Green Card convention countries outside the EEA, where claims are settled under that country's law.
Green card rules
A Green Card is used/recommended when travelling to Green Card convention countries outside the EEA; it is not valid in Kosovo, Northern Cyprus or Nagorno-Karabakh. It can be ordered or self-printed via the op.fi online service.
Driver restrictions
No specific age or experience-based driver exclusions are stated for the motor liability insurance itself; however, compensation payable to an injured driver may be reduced or refused if the driver caused the accident while under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicant, and compensation for self-inflicted personal injury caused by gross negligence may likewise be reduced or refused.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder must notify the insurer or its representative without undue delay after becoming aware of a traffic accident that could lead to a compensation claim, and must provide all information and documents needed to process the claim; no fixed number of days is specified.
Bonus-malus rules
New consumer car policies start at bonus class 5 (40%). Each claim-free year raises the bonus class; the maximum bonus of 80% (class 15-17) can be reached after five consecutive claim-free years. A claim lowers the bonus according to a fixed table, and four or more claims in one period drop the bonus to class 1 (0%). After two consecutive years at the 80% bonus, 'bonusturva' protects the bonus from being reduced by a single claim.
