Direct payment

HUK-COBURG pays the workshop directly under Kasko SELECT. In standard casco, the insurer pays the repair costs upon submission of an invoice. The policyholder may also choose to pay first and be reimbursed.

Unique selling points

  • HUK-COBURG waives the defence of gross negligence in casco – covering most accidents caused through inattention – with only two explicit exceptions (driving under alcohol/drug influence; enabling theft).
  • Kasko SELECT saves 20% on the casco premium in exchange for workshop selection by HUK-COBURG, backed by a 6-year worldwide repair guarantee – one of the longest in the German market.
  • The Vollkasko automatically includes GAP cover (Differenzkasko) for leased and financed Pkw at no extra cost, closing the shortfall between indemnity and outstanding lease/loan balance; exclusively claiming GAP does not trigger a no-claims class downgrade.
  • Drive battery (Antriebs-Akku) of electric and hybrid vehicles is covered up to €20,000 as a named peril in the Vollkasko, with no age-related deductions when replacement is required after a covered loss.
  • As Germany's largest motor insurer with over 9 million casco customers and awards for "Fairster Preis" and "Fairste Schadenregulierung" (Focus Money 11/2025 and 11/2026), HUK-COBURG combines competitive pricing with broad service network coverage.

Coverage limits

Own damage – accident (Unfallschäden)

Covered

The comprehensive (Vollkasko) policy covers damage to the insured vehicle caused by accident (collision or other sudden external mechanical force), including self-caused accidents. The maximum indemnity is capped at the new price of the vehicle.

Source

Total loss – replacement value / new price compensation

Covered

In case of total loss, destruction or theft the insurer pays the replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert) minus salvage value. For new passenger cars (Pkw), motorcycles, quads and trikes, the new purchase price (Neupreis) is paid if total loss occurs within 24 months of first registration (6 months under Basis-Tarif) provided the vehicle is still owned by the original purchaser.

Source

Partial loss – repair costs

Covered

If the vehicle is damaged but not a total loss, the insurer pays the necessary costs of complete and proper repair up to the replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert). If the vehicle is not repaired or not repaired fully, payment is capped at the replacement value minus salvage value.

Source

Theft, robbery, misappropriation, coercion, unauthorized use

Covered

The Vollkasko (via Teilkasko inclusion) covers theft, robbery, misappropriation and extortion of the vehicle, as well as damage caused during an attempted theft. Unauthorized use is covered only if the perpetrator has no entitlement whatsoever to use the vehicle. After theft the insurer waits one month before paying.

Glass breakage (Bruch der Verglasung)

Covered

Breakage damage to the vehicle glazing is covered. Glazing includes glass and plastic panes (front, rear, partition, side windows), glass roofs, mirrors and lamp covers, as well as – from AKB 01.01.2026 – integrated driver-assistance system screens and displays. The insurer also covers the cost of recalibrating ADAS after windscreen replacement and cleaning the interior. If only the glass is repaired (not replaced), the deductible is waived when the workshop is pre-agreed with HUK-COBURG.

Source

Natural perils (Naturgewalten) incl. lightning and overvoltage

Covered

Vollkasko (via Teilkasko inclusion) covers direct impact on the vehicle from storm (≥ wind force 7, i.e. ≥ 50 km/h), hail, flooding, earthquake, subsidence, landslide, avalanches, roof avalanches, volcanic eruption as well as lightning strikes and overvoltage from lightning (e.g. while EV is connected to building power). Damage caused by objects thrown by these forces is also covered. Under the Basis-Tarif, avalanches and roof avalanches are excluded.

Source

Vandalism / malicious damage by third parties

Covered

Vollkasko covers damage to the vehicle caused by malicious or wilful acts of persons who have no entitlement whatsoever to use the vehicle. This expressly includes cyber/software manipulation (e.g. hacker attacks on the vehicle software). Persons authorised by the owner (e.g. workshop staff, hotel employees) or persons in a close relationship with the owner are not covered.

Roadside assistance / breakdown service (Schutzbrief)

Optional

The Schutzbrief (breakdown cover) is a separate, optional add-on to the casco contract. It provides service or cost reimbursement for breakdowns, accidents or theft throughout Europe (except Russia and Belarus), including towing to the nearest suitable workshop or charging station, vehicle recovery, short trips by taxi/public transport (up to €50), and – for EV/hybrid – temporary storage in a high-voltage container (up to 2 weeks domestic, 4 weeks abroad). Many additional services (rental car, accommodation, return travel) apply only from 50 km distance from home.

Source

Replacement vehicle / rental car (via Schutzbrief add-on)

Optional

A rental car (Pkw) is available as part of the Schutzbrief (optional add-on) when the insured vehicle cannot be made roadworthy again after a breakdown, accident or theft, provided the incident occurs at least 50 km from home. Cost: up to €80 per day for up to 7 days; for claims abroad, up to €1,000 for the return journey regardless of days. Cannot be combined with the return-travel service in the same claim.

Driver accident protection (Fahrerschutz)

Optional

The Fahrerschutz is a separate, optional add-on. It covers personal injury to the driver (and from AKB 2022/2026 all occupants and the holder) when using the insured vehicle, regardless of fault, including self-caused accidents, unknown third parties or force majeure. Benefits include: lost earnings, pain and suffering (Schmerzensgeld – only after ≥3 consecutive inpatient hospital days within 6 months), care costs, maintenance payments for dependants, and survivor benefits. From AKB 01.01.2026 also includes a hospital daily benefit of €20 per calendar day for up to 4 weeks per claim. Benefit is limited to the agreed sum insured. Third-party entitlements are offset.

Key conditions

driver_age_experience_limit

No explicit minimum driver age restriction is stated in the AKB for the casco coverage. Driver age and the composition of the driver group (e.g. drivers under 25) are tariff features that influence the premium calculation, but they do not restrict coverage entitlement under the policy conditions.

repair_network_requirements

Under the standard casco (Classic without SELECT), the policyholder may freely choose any suitable workshop. Under Kasko SELECT, the policyholder must contact HUK-COBURG before any repair and allow HUK-COBURG to select and commission the workshop from its own network. Only claims in Germany are subject to Kasko SELECT conditions. Non-compliance reduces the insurer's obligation by at most 15%. In return, HUK-COBURG provides 6 years guarantee on repairs (worldwide from date of handover).

territorial_scope

Casco coverage applies within the geographical borders of Europe and in non-European territories belonging to the EU. No coverage in Russia and Belarus (AKB 01.01.2026). Third-party liability also extends to countries listed on the Green Card where country names are not crossed out.

anti_theft_requirements

No general anti-theft device requirement is stated in the AKB as a condition for theft coverage. However, if the policyholder enables theft of the vehicle or its insured parts (e.g. leaving keys in an unattended vehicle), the gross-negligence waiver does not apply and the insurer may reduce its payment proportionally to the degree of fault.

claim_notification_deadline

The policyholder must report any claim to HUK-COBURG within one week (verbally or by phone is sufficient for most claims; written notice required for theft). For theft, fire or animal collision claims exceeding €1,000, the incident must be reported to the police immediately. HUK-COBURG pays the determined amount within two weeks of establishing its obligation and the level of payment. For theft, payment is made at the earliest one month after the claim is reported.

deductible_rules

The deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) is individually agreed and noted in the policy certificate. Common options include €150 (partial kasko) and €500 (comprehensive kasko). The deductible is applied to each claim event. Exception: if a glass breakage is repaired (not replaced) and the workshop is pre-agreed with HUK-COBURG, no deductible applies. For Kasko PLUS own-damage claims, a fixed deductible of €500 per claim applies in addition to any casco deductible.

Policy specifics

Battery/drive battery damage for electric and hybrid vehicles

Comprehensive coverage extends to damage of drive battery (Antriebs-Akku) in electric and hybrid vehicles

Isolation and storage costs for damaged batteries

Comprehensive coverage includes costs for isolation (e.g. high-voltage container) and storage of damaged electric or hybrid vehicle batteries

Waiver of objection to gross negligence

HUK-COBURG Comprehensive typically covers gross negligence in most cases without objection

Kasko SELECT - workshop binding discount

Optional rate variant with 20% discount on comprehensive/partial kasko premium when insurer selects repair workshop in Germany

New vehicle replacement value compensation

For comprehensive coverage, new vehicles receive replacement cost compensation instead of used value

GAP cover (Differenzkasko) for leased or financed vehicles

In the event of total loss or theft of a leased or financed Pkw, Vollkasko automatically covers the gap between the agreed maximum indemnity and the outstanding discounted balance from the leasing or credit contract. Not covered: overdue instalments, unrepaired prior damage, excess mileage. Insurer offsets third-party liability payments. Exclusively claiming GAP cover does not lead to a downgrade of the no-claims class.

Private charging equipment for EV/hybrid (Ladeausrüstung)

From AKB 01.01.2026 onward, the casco also covers the private charging equipment of the insured EV or hybrid: fixed wallboxes, induction plates, mobile chargers, charging cables and charging cards. Coverage is capped at €5,000 per claim. Requirements: the policyholder owns the equipment and no other insurance covers it (except for charging cables and cards, which are covered without this restriction).

Self-deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) levels

Comprehensive coverage allows flexible self-deductible selection to reduce premium

Damage-free classification impact on comprehensive premium

Unlike partial kasko, comprehensive kasko uses damage-free classification (SF-class) similar to liability insurance affecting premium

GAP coverage for leased vehicles

Comprehensive coverage automatically includes GAP (gap insurance/difference coverage) for leased vehicles at no extra cost

Non-downgrade protection for claims

For leased vehicles, if only GAP coverage is claimed, comprehensive kasko classification is not downgraded

Vehicle type coverage (combustion, hybrid, electric)

Comprehensive coverage available for all vehicle types: traditional combustion, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles
