HUK-COBURG
HUK-COBURG is a motor third-party liability insurance for the DE market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
In the event of a justified third-party liability claim, HUK-COBURG pays the claimant directly on behalf of the insured (Regulierungsvollmacht, A.1.1.4). The insurer has full authority to settle or defend claims in the insured's name. For the Ausland-Schadenschutz (A.5.5), the insured can assert their own claims directly against HUK-COBURG. Payment is due within 2 weeks of the insurer determining its obligation and the amount (A.2.7).
Geographic scope

Unique selling points
- 100 million EUR blanket coverage per loss event for personal injury, property damage, and pure financial loss — far exceeding the German statutory minimum of 7.5 million EUR for bodily injury — with a sub-limit of 15 million EUR per injured or killed person.
- Mallorca Policy (Mallorca-Police) included at no extra charge in the Classic-Tarif, covering liability for rental cars across Europe for up to 6 months per rental — extended from 3 months in prior policy versions.
- Technology-neutral coverage explicitly confirmed for automated, autonomous, and electric vehicles, including insured drive-battery damage up to EUR 20,000 under Vollkasko, and private EV charging equipment (Wallbox, charging cables) up to EUR 5,000 per claim under Kasko.
- Kasko SELECT workshop-binding option delivers a 20% saving on Kasko premium with a 6-year worldwide repair guarantee on all partner-workshop repairs, with deductible waived when a cracked windscreen is repaired (rather than replaced) through a pre-approved workshop.
- Gross negligence waiver included as standard in Kasko and Fahrerschutz: HUK-COBURG waives its right to reduce or deny payment for most grossly negligent acts (except alcohol-impaired driving and facilitated theft), and MTPL regress against the policyholder is capped at EUR 5,000 per co-insured person.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury liability (Personenschäden)
Covered
HUK-COBURG covers bodily injury claims against the insured arising from use of the vehicle, up to 100 million EUR per loss event and a maximum of 15 million EUR per injured or killed person. Payments are settled in cash for justified claims; unjustified or excessive claims are defended at the insurer's cost (AKB A.1.1.1–A.1.1.3, A.1.3).
SourceProperty damage and pure financial loss liability
Covered
Covers property damage (Sachschäden) and pure financial losses (reine Vermögensschäden) caused to third parties by the insured vehicle, up to the agreed sum of 100 million EUR per loss event (pauschal for all damage categories combined). The insurer has full authority to settle or contest claims in the policyholder's name (AKB A.1.1.1, A.1.3).
SourceLegal defence against unfounded claims (Regulierungsvollmacht)
Covered
HUK-COBURG is empowered to defend or settle claims made against the insured in their name and at the insurer's cost. Unfounded or excessive third-party claims are contested at no cost to the policyholder. This is the mandatory liability-defence component of the MTPL (AKB A.1.1.3, A.1.1.4). Note: This is distinct from a standalone Rechtsschutzversicherung (legal expenses insurance), which is a separate product.
SourceGreen Card (Internationale Versicherungskarte)
Covered
Coverage extends by default to all countries within the geographic borders of Europe and EU non-European territories (A.1.4.1). Where HUK-COBURG issues an International Insurance Card (Green Card), coverage is additionally extended to the non-European countries listed therein, provided the country designation is not crossed out (A.1.4.2). In each visited country, coverage applies at least at the legally required minimum for that country, but not less than the contractually agreed scope.
SourceRoadside assistance (Kfz-Schutzbrief)
Optional
The Kfz-Schutzbrief (roadside assistance) is a legally independent optional contract that can be added to the MTPL policy. It provides 24/7 on-site assistance from the insured's home address, including breakdown recovery, towing to the nearest suitable workshop or EV charging station, vehicle recovery from off-road situations, and a range of travel assistance services (A.3). Coverage applies in geographic Europe, EU non-European territories, excluding Russia and Belarus.
SourceDriver and occupant accident protection (Fahrerschutz)
Optional
The Fahrerschutz is a legally independent optional add-on that covers the driver (and all occupants in the 2026 AKB) for personal injury suffered in an accident during vehicle use — including self-caused or partly-caused accidents, unknown third-party scenarios, and accidents due to force majeure. Benefits are calculated as if the insurer were liable under MTPL rules and include lost earnings, pain and suffering, care costs, maintenance for dependants, and (from 2026 AKB) bereaved persons' compensation and a hospital daily allowance of €20/day for up to 4 weeks. The sum insured is defined individually in the Versicherungsschein (A.4).
SourcePassenger liability (insured persons under MTPL)
Covered
Authorised passengers are co-insured persons under the MTPL (A.1.2), meaning third-party bodily injury claims by passengers against the policyholder are covered by the MTPL up to the agreed sums. Personal injury of the driver themselves, however, is explicitly not covered under MTPL (A.1.5.6 covers only property/financial damage between co-insured persons; personal injury to the driver requires the optional Fahrerschutz). Passengers riding in a co-insured trailer are covered at statutory minimum sums (A.1.3.2).
SourceKey conditions
territorial_scope
Coverage applies within the geographic borders of Europe and in EU non-European territories (A.1.4.1). Coverage is extended to non-European countries listed on the International Insurance Card (Green Card) where country designations are not crossed out (A.1.4.2). In each country visited, coverage applies at least at the locally required statutory minimum but no less than the contractually agreed scope. Russia and Belarus are excluded for the Mallorca-Police (A.1.6), but the general MTPL territorial scope is defined solely by the Green Card and European borders.
green_card_rules
HUK-COBURG issues an International Insurance Card (Green Card / Internationale Versicherungskarte) upon request, extending MTPL coverage to non-European countries listed on the card where country designations are not crossed out (A.1.4.2). For European countries, no Green Card is required to obtain coverage — it applies automatically within geographic Europe. The Green Card also extends the Fahrerschutz add-on coverage to the same non-European countries (A.4.5).
driver_restrictions
The vehicle may only be driven by an authorised driver — a person using the vehicle with the knowledge and consent of the person entitled to dispose of it (D.1.2). The driver must hold the legally required driving licence for the vehicle category (D.1.3). The policyholder, holder, and owner must not knowingly allow unauthorised persons or persons without the required licence to drive the vehicle. In MTPL, if a duty is intentionally violated, the insurer's recourse against the policyholder is capped at EUR 5,000 per co-insured person (D.3.3).
claim_notification_deadline
A loss must be reported to HUK-COBURG within one week of occurrence (E.1.1). Notification by phone or in person is sufficient for most losses; written notification (text form, e.g. email) is required if the vehicle or its parts are stolen. Additionally, if police, prosecutors, or other authorities investigate in connection with the incident, the insurer must be informed immediately — even if the loss was already reported (E.1.1). Third-party claims asserted against the insured must be reported within one week (E.2.1); court proceedings must be reported without delay (E.2.2).
bonus_malus_rules
The SF-Klasse (Schadenfreiheitsklasse) system applies to both MTPL and Vollkasko. For passenger cars (Pkw) in the Classic-Tarif, SF classes range from M (highest risk) through 0, 1/2, 1 up to SF 50 (lowest premium rate at 16% of base premium in MTPL). Contracts are reclassified annually on 1 January based on the prior calendar year's loss experience. A claim-free year advances the contract by one SF class. After a loss-affecting event, the contract is stepped back according to the applicable SF table (I.3.5). A voluntary Rabattschutz (no-claims protection) can be agreed for an additional premium, protecting against step-back for one loss per calendar year (I.4). To avoid a step-back, the policyholder may repay the insurer's settlement within 12 months, provided settlement costs do not exceed EUR 1,000 (I.5). The Basis-Tarif uses a separate, more punitive step-back table.
