Breakdown Rescue

Covered

The IPID lists Breakdown Rescue as a benefit included under Third Party, Fire and Theft cover (not on the optional covers/extra list), providing roadside and driveway assistance, towing, and related benefits (finishing the journey, theft of car, EV out-of-charge recovery) within the 32 counties of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The policy booklet notes that Section 6 applies 'if shown in the policy schedule'.

JourneyWise personal accident cover

€26,000

Optional JourneyWise accident cover (Section 4, on the IPID's optional covers list) pays €26,000 for death, total and permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes, or loss of one or more limbs of the 'person insured' (the person named in the schedule as insured), plus €130 per day as a hospital in-patient up to 20 days, while in, getting into or out of the car, while a fare-paying passenger on public transport, or as a pedestrian.

General passenger accident cover

Excluded

JourneyWise accident cover (Section 4) only benefits the specific 'person insured' named in the schedule, not other passengers generally; a separate small medical expenses benefit of up to €200 per occupant exists under Section 3(A) but only under Comprehensive cover, and is not a lump-sum accident benefit for passengers.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The policy covers events occurring in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands during the period of insurance; cover is automatically extended to the EU for 31 days in any period of insurance.

Green card rules

A Green Card is issued free of charge on request; the policyholder must contact Aviva at least one week before their journey. Foreign use terms are set out under endorsement PC69, which also covers customs duty or a Spanish Bail Bond incurred as a result of an insured claim abroad.

Driver restrictions

Any person driving under the certificate must hold a licence to drive that vehicle and comply with any restrictions, conditions or limits on that licence; learner permit holders must be accompanied at all times by a full licence holder. Optional endorsements (PC1-PC4) can require a full EU/UK licence for all drivers and/or restrict cover to drivers aged 25-70, with named-driver exceptions.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder or any other covered person must let Aviva know immediately about any event which may give rise to a claim, and immediately if they become aware of any prosecution or inquest connected with the event.

Bonus-malus rules

A no-claims discount accrues at 10% per claims-free year up to a maximum of 50% after five years, calculated separately per insured vehicle and non-transferable to another person. Paying a claim reduces the discount to 0% at the next renewal, unless the optional Protected No Claims Discount (PC302/PC302A, allowing up to two unlimited claims in a three-year period without loss of discount, excluding fire, theft and windscreen claims) or step-back cover (PC208, tiered reduction rather than reset to 0%) has been purchased for an extra premium.
