Death or bodily injury liability
Covered
We will pay the full amount an insured person (or their legal personal representatives) may have to pay for being legally liable for a person's death or bodily injury arising as a result of an accident caused by or in connection with the car. There is no stated upper monetary cap on bodily injury liability; the full amount of legal liability is covered.
Property damage liability
Covered
We will pay up to a limit of €30,000,000 including costs and expenses the amount an insured person (or their legal personal representatives) may have to pay for being legally liable for damage to property arising as a result of an accident caused by or in connection with the car. Driving other cars (Section 2D) also provides property damage cover up to €30,000,000 where applicable.
Legal defence costs
Covered
Legal costs are covered where they relate to an incident covered under Section 2 (Liability to third parties). This includes solicitor fees at a coroner's inquest or district court defence, costs of defence against a charge of manslaughter or causing death by dangerous driving under the Road Traffic Act 1961, and all other legal costs and expenses in defending any claim for bodily injury or property damage. Prior written approval from Aviva is required before any payment is made. In addition, legal expenses cover (underwritten by ARAG Legal Protection Limited) is included as a standard benefit.
Green Card / International motor insurance certificate
Covered
Aviva will automatically extend the policy to include the terms of endorsement PC69, providing full policy cover within the EU for 31 days in any period of insurance. A Green Card is issued free of charge on request for travel outside the EU or to countries requiring one; the policyholder must contact Aviva at least one week before their journey. The policy (endorsement PC69) applies for the period shown in the international motor insurance card (Green Card) issued for the car while it is in any of the countries the Green Card applies to or while being transported between any ports in those countries.
Breakdown Rescue

24/7 breakdown rescue is included as standard (if shown in the policy schedule – Section 6). Cover applies in the 32 counties of Ireland and in England, Scotland and Wales. Benefits include roadside and driveway assistance (up to one hour free labour), towing, finishing the journey (alternative transport, replacement car or accommodation where more than 30km from home), theft of your car (replacement car for up to 5 days), electric vehicle out-of-charge recovery, and message relay. Breakdown Rescue does not apply outside Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Section 6 does not apply when the car is being used abroad under PC69.
Driver personal accident cover (JourneyWise)
Optional
JourneyWise personal accident cover (Section 4) is an optional add-on. It provides benefits for death (€26,000), total and permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes (€26,000), loss of one or more limbs (€26,000), and €130 per complete day as an inpatient in hospital up to 20 days. Key conditions
territorial_scope
Cover is provided for events occurring in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands during the period of insurance. The policy is automatically extended to provide full policy cover within EU member states and countries meeting EC Directive 2009/103/EC requirements for up to 31 days in any period of insurance (endorsement PC69). Breakdown Rescue (Section 6) does not apply outside the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Driving other cars (Section 2D) does not apply when abroad.
green_card_rules
A Green Card (international motor insurance certificate) is provided free of charge on request; the policyholder must request it at least one week before travel. For EU travel, full policy cover is automatically extended for up to 31 days under endorsement PC69 without a Green Card. A deal between Irish and UK authorities means no Green Card is required for Northern Ireland or mainland UK travel. Endorsement PC69 (Foreign use) applies for the period shown on the issued Green Card and also covers customs duties and Spanish Bail Bond costs where applicable.
driver_restrictions
Any person whose driving is covered by the policy must hold a valid licence to drive the vehicle and must not have been disqualified from holding that licence. They must comply with all restrictions, conditions and limits of their driving licence. Learner permit holders must at all times be accompanied by a full driving licence holder. Endorsements PC1–PC4 may impose additional requirements (e.g. full EU or UK licence, age restrictions 25–70). Driving other cars cover (Section 2D) requires the cover to be shown on Section 5(b) of the certificate and applies to private cars only (not vans, commercial vehicles, campers, taxis). All drivers must reside in the Republic of Ireland. No cover operates if any driver has an alcohol/drug level above the legal limit or a prosecution pending under the Road Traffic Acts.
claim_notification_deadline
The policyholder or any insured person must notify Aviva immediately about any event that may give rise to a claim, providing all details required. They must immediately notify Aviva if they become aware of any prosecution or inquest in connection with the event. No admission, denial, negotiation or settlement of a claim may be made without Aviva's written permission. All documents, proof, information, letters, legal summons or similar documents must be sent to Aviva as reasonably required. Full co-operation with Aviva's investigation and handling of any claim is required.
bonus_malus_rules
No-claim discount (NCD) is allowed provided no claim is paid in any period of insurance. Maximum NCD is 50% (reached after 5 consecutive claims-free years: 1 year=10%, 2 years=20%, 3 years=30%, 4 years=40%, 5 years=50%). If a claim is paid, NCD reduces to 0% at next renewal. Optional step-back protection (PC208) reduces NCD stepwise rather than to nil on a single claim. Optional protected NCD (PC302/PC302A) allows up to two unlimited claims in a three-year period without loss of NCD (further restrictions apply thereafter). NCD protection does not protect the premium from increasing. Fire, theft, windscreen, replacement lock cover and personal belongings claims do not affect NCD. NCD is earned per car separately and cannot be transferred to another person.
