Menzis
Menzis is a health insurance for the NL market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Menzis pays contracted care providers directly; for non-contracted providers abroad, the policyholder pays upfront and submits the invoice via Mijn Menzis, the Menzis declaration app, or by post. For hospital admissions abroad, the Alarmcentrale (+31 317 455 555) must be notified immediately and can arrange direct guarantees to the provider.

Unique selling points
- Available for only €1.99 per month, making it one of the most affordable supplementary health and travel medical policies on the Dutch market.
- Can be purchased at any time during the year — not only during the standard year-end switch period — with coverage starting on the first day of the following month.
- Worldwide 24/7 emergency assistance through the dedicated Menzis Alarmcentrale (+31 317 455 555), which coordinates care, arranges direct guarantees to foreign hospitals, and organizes repatriation.
- Dental accident coverage of up to €10,000 per accident in the Netherlands — significantly above the market standard for this price tier — without requiring a separate dental insurance policy.
- The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is included digitally in the Menzis app and accessible offline, enabling cashless access to state healthcare at most EU hospitals without upfront payment.
Coverage limits
Emergency Medical Expenses Abroad
Covered
Full reimbursement of emergency medical expenses incurred abroad, as a supplement on top of what the basic insurance (Basisverzekering) pays. The additional coverage fills the gap between the Dutch standard tariff paid by the Basisverzekering and the actual costs charged abroad. Coverage applies only during temporary stays abroad of up to 365 days.
Dental Accident Coverage Netherlands
Covered
Dental costs after an accident in the Netherlands are reimbursed up to €10,000 per accident for policyholders aged 18 and over. Prior approval (akkoordverklaring) from Menzis is required before starting treatment. The dentist or orthodontist submits a treatment plan; treatment must start within 3 months of the accident and be completed within 1 year.
Dental Accident Coverage Abroad
Covered
Emergency dental care abroad is reimbursed up to €250 per calendar year. Coverage applies only when there is acute pain, the treatment cannot be postponed until return to the Netherlands, and the need for dental care was unforeseeable. Planned treatments such as fillings, implants, or crowns are explicitly excluded.
Medical Transport Repatriation
Covered
100% coverage of medical transport from abroad to a medical facility in the Netherlands in case of medical necessity due to illness, accident, or death. If the Alarmcentrale determines that a travel companion must accompany the policyholder, those companion travel costs are also covered. In case of death, transport of the deceased to the Netherlands is covered.

Emergency Medications Abroad
Covered
Emergency medications needed abroad are covered as a supplement on top of what the Basisverzekering pays. The Basisverzekering covers up to the Dutch tariff; the additional policy covers the excess.
