Direct payment

Medical costs are reimbursed as a supplement to the mandatory Dutch basic health insurance (zorgverzekering); ASR reimburses only what the Dutch health insurer does not or does not fully reimburse. All assistance must be coordinated through the Alarm Centre (SOS/Alarmcentrale, tel. +31 30 256 77 77) in advance; direct payment to providers is arranged through the Alarm Centre.

Unique selling points

  • Fully modular 'Ik kies zelf' structure lets policyholders activate or deactivate individual coverage modules (medical costs, baggage, sports, cancellation, etc.) online at any time, rather than choosing between fixed tiers.
  • Trip duration extendable up to 180 consecutive days per trip, significantly above the typical 60-day market standard, making the product suitable for long-term travellers and gap-year travellers.
  • Sledging, ice skating, cross-country skiing and diving are covered as standard without requiring the sports add-on, unlike many competitors who charge extra for any snow or water sports.
  • 24/7 Alarm Centre (tel. 030 256 77 77) coordinates all emergency assistance abroad including medical evacuation, repatriation and search-and-rescue, with unlimited reimbursement of Alarm Centre call costs.
  • Premium is invested by a.s.r. as sustainably as possible in line with its responsible investment policy, and multi-policy discounts of up to 10% are available when combining with other a.s.r. products.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must contact the Alarm Centre as soon as possible, if possible before costs are incurred, whenever abroad with a serious illness, serious accident or hospitalisation. Prior approval from the Alarm Centre is required for all assistance and cost-making. If no one can reasonably call the Alarm Centre, cover still applies up to the amount that would have been reimbursed had the Alarm Centre been engaged.

Unauthorized treatment

If costs are incurred without prior approval from the Alarm Centre, reimbursement is limited to the maximum that would have been paid had approval been obtained. Failure to comply with obligations that damages ASR's interests may result in no reimbursement.

Purchase while abroad

The policy must be in force before departure. The policy is a continuous (doorlopende) annual policy; it cannot be taken out after the start of a trip for coverage on that trip. Coverage is valid from the moment the insured leaves home for a trip until return to the home address, provided both departure and return fall within the policy term.

Chronic conditions

Chronic or pre-existing conditions that the insured was already being treated for abroad before the start of the trip are excluded. Medical costs that the insured knew before or at the start of the trip would need to be incurred are also excluded. If the damage did not arise from the pre-existing condition, coverage may still apply.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy complications during a trip are a covered ground for early return. Becoming pregnant (or a partner becoming pregnant) is a covered ground for trip cancellation. Medical costs related to pregnancy complications may be covered under the optional Keuzedekking Geneeskundige kosten, provided they are unexpected and medically necessary.

pre_existing_conditions

Not covered: damage arising from a disease, condition or abnormality for which the insured (also) travelled abroad for treatment, or for which the insured was already under treatment abroad before the trip. If the damage did not arise from the pre-existing condition, coverage may still apply. For the cancellation add-on: conditions known within 90 days before taking out the add-on are excluded.

coverage_duration_limit

The maximum trip duration is stated on the policy schedule: 60, 90 or 180 consecutive days. Coverage ends at 24:00 on the last day of the maximum trip duration. Coverage continues beyond the limit only if the trip is extended due to unforeseen delay beyond the insured's control, until the earliest possible moment of return home.
