Direct payment

Eurolife can pay medical costs directly to the provider on behalf of the insured, or reimburse the insured if they pay out of pocket; prior approval from the Eurolife Assistance Centre is required before incurring expenses (except in life-threatening emergencies where hospitalization within 48 hours and notification are required).

Geographic scope

Abroad (excluding Romania and high-risk countries)

Valid in the country or territory specified in the policy, excluding Romania, Ukraine, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Lebanon, as well as any other high-risk country per Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel alerts.

Unique selling points

  • Unlimited 24/7 telemedicine consultations with specialist physicians (over 22 specialties via Telios) are included in all coverage tiers at no extra cost — a feature typically charged separately by other insurers.
  • Emergency medical assistance limits up to 50,000 EUR per person, well above the Schengen visa minimum, with direct payment to providers so the insured does not pay out of pocket in emergencies.
  • COVID-19 medical treatment is explicitly covered under the base policy as an exception to the pandemic exclusion, including trip cancellation triggered by a mandatory quarantine/isolation proven by a positive PCR test.
  • Romanian-language assistance centre available 24/7 throughout the entire trip, with a dedicated phone line staffed exclusively in Romanian — a significant advantage for Romanian travelers abroad.
  • Optional leisure and adventure sports coverage (Art. 5.3.6.2) extends protection to a wide range of activities — from skiing and scuba diving to bungee jumping, kayaking and kitesurfing — with a single optional add-on declaration, avoiding the need to purchase separate sports policies.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must contact the Eurolife Assistance Centre (+40 314 23 00 79) urgently BEFORE presenting to a medical facility or repair unit. In a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate hospitalization, the insured or their representative must notify Eurolife within 48 hours of hospitalization. Any insured event must be notified to Eurolife within 30 days of occurrence; otherwise Eurolife may refuse compensation. Expenses incurred without prior Eurolife approval may be refused or capped at a reasonable market level (max 500 EUR in Turkey/Egypt, max 1,500 EUR in other countries).

Unauthorized treatment

If Eurolife is not notified before the insured presents to a medical or repair facility, and/or expenses are incurred without Assistance Centre approval, Eurolife may refuse coverage or reduce the compensation to a level deemed reasonable (at market prices), capped at a maximum of 500 EUR in Turkey and Egypt, and 1,500 EUR in all other countries.

Purchase while abroad

If the policy is concluded after the insured has already left Romania, coverage of insured risks begins only after 10 days from policy issuance and full premium payment (day of issuance/payment included). The insured must prove they left Romania no more than 4 weeks before policy issuance.

Chronic conditions

Chronic, recurrent, degenerative or continuous diseases known to the insured at policy issuance are excluded. Conditions whose symptoms appeared before the coverage period are also excluded, even if unexamined. Exacerbations or complications of pre-existing conditions are not covered. Exception: up to 300 EUR for life-saving care or acute pain relief during the trip.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, childbirth, voluntary abortion, infertility, contraception, IVF and their complications are excluded from medical coverage. Exception for trip cancellation only: premature birth of the insured's child or grandchild (before week 37 of pregnancy) occurring up to 7 days before planned departure is covered under the optional trip cancellation benefit.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Pre-existing conditions known at policy issuance are excluded (including chronic, recurrent and degenerative conditions). Events caused by conditions for which symptoms appeared or investigations were underway before policy issuance are also excluded, even if the final diagnosis came after. Limited exception: up to 300 EUR for life-saving or acute pain relief during the trip.

Coverage duration limit

Coverages are valid for trips not exceeding 90 consecutive days each; for insured persons aged 70 or over (age 69+), the maximum covered trip duration is 30 consecutive days. Coverages are not valid for trips exceeding these periods. Consecutive policies to extend beyond these limits are considered a breach and only the first policy will be valid.
