Hospitalisation costs abroad
€250,000 – €1,250,000
Hospitalisation costs abroad are included within the overall medical-expenses limit (€250,000 Horizon temporary / €750,000 Horizon annual / €1,250,000 Premium). In the Premium formula, follow-up medical costs incurred in Belgium after a hospitalisation abroad are additionally covered up to €10,000/person/claim, for a maximum of 1 year from the date of admission.
Outpatient medical treatment abroad
€250,000 – €1,250,000
Outpatient medical costs abroad are covered within the same overall medical-expenses limit as hospitalisation: €250,000 (Horizon temporary), €750,000 (Horizon annual), €1,250,000 (Premium), subject to the €80 deductible per claim (waived for urgent dental care).
Urgent dental care
€150
Only in Premium
Urgent dental care abroad is reimbursed up to €150/person (Premium formula, per Bijstand Personen terms); it is explicitly exempted from the general €80 medical-expenses deductible under all formulas. No separate cap distinct from this is stated for the Horizon temporary/annual formulas in the sources reviewed.
Local medical transport
Covered
Only in Premium
Per the Premium formula's Bijstand Personen terms, local medical transport abroad (ambulance, snow-sled, or helicopter on a doctor's prescription for a local route) is organised and paid for by AXA within the overall medical-expenses limit; no separate monetary cap is stated. This specific transport line was not confirmed for the Horizon formulas in the sources reviewed.
Medical repatriation/evacuation
Covered
AXA organises and pays for the repatriation of the insured (if needed under medical supervision) to a hospital near home or to their home in Belgium, subject to approval of AXA's medical service; the sources reviewed do not state a specific monetary cap for this benefit (it is organised/paid rather than capped at a stated figure).
Repatriation of remains / post-mortem costs
€750
Only in Premium
In case of death abroad, AXA (Premium formula) takes charge of body care and coffin costs up to €750, and pays for repatriation of the remains to the place of burial in Belgium or, alternatively, funeral costs in the country of death up to €750. Repatriation itself is organised and paid without an additional stated cap.
Search and rescue costs abroad
€6,250 – €10,000
Search and rescue costs abroad are covered up to €6,250 per insured person under Horizon formulas, and up to €10,000 per insured person under the Premium formula.
COVID-19 / pandemic-related costs
€6,500
A sudden pandemic outbreak while already abroad is covered under the normal medical-expenses limits. Where the claim follows a pandemic declared by the WHO and Belgian, destination-country or EU authorities had, on the departure date, only strongly advised (not banned) against travel, cover is limited to a combined maximum of €6,500 for medical costs, repatriation, assistance to insured under 18, and provision of a driver. Claims arising where authorities had formally banned travel to the destination are excluded.
Pre-existing / chronic conditions
Excluded
Per the Premium formula's Bijstand Personen terms, chronic illnesses that have caused disorders of the nervous, respiratory, circulatory, blood or kidney systems are excluded, as are diagnosed conditions not yet healed and still under treatment at departure that carry a real risk of rapid deterioration. An illness avoidable by a (non-mandatory) vaccination the insured chose not to have is also excluded, except in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The equivalent exclusion list for the Horizon formulas' assistance terms was not among the documents reviewed.
Winter sports cover
Conditional
Under the Horizon temporary formula, claims resulting from snow or ice sports activities are only covered if the insured declared practising this activity when taking out the contract. No such declaration restriction is stated for the Horizon annual or Premium formulas in the sources reviewed.
Adventure / air sports cover
Conditional
Damage from gliding, skydiving, paragliding, hang-gliding or ULM is covered only if the insured is physically accompanied in the same craft by an instructor whose qualification is recognised by the relevant federation. Wingsuit flying, base jumping, bungee jumping, ski-jumping, skeleton and bobsleigh are always excluded, regardless of supervision.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Only in Premium
Per the Premium formula's Bijstand Personen terms, consequences abroad of a pregnancy beyond the 26th week are excluded, unless the insured suffers an unforeseeable complication while abroad; voluntary termination of pregnancy for non-therapeutic reasons is excluded. Where covered, complications fall within the general medical-expenses limit. The equivalent condition for the Horizon formulas' assistance terms was not among the documents reviewed.
Personal liability
No limit stated
No personal liability cover is described in the IPID or the general/special terms reviewed for this product.
Legal assistance / criminal bail advance
€12,500
Only in Premium
If the insured faces criminal prosecution abroad (Premium formula), AXA advances the criminal bail up to €12,500 per person per claim (to be reimbursed shortly after release by the authorities, and at the latest 3 months after advance) and the fees of a lawyer chosen by the insured up to €1,250 per prosecuted person (reimbursable within 30 days). The IPID confirms this benefit exists across formulas but does not restate the amounts for Horizon tiers.
24/7 assistance and Doctors Online
Covered
AXA provides a permanently available (24/7) assistance telephone line during the trip, plus the free 'Doctors Online by AXA' service allowing the insured to consult a Belgian doctor by videoconference at any time, from Belgium or abroad, including when it is difficult to communicate with a local doctor.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured must contact AXA immediately before any intervention so the most suitable assistance (transport, medical service, etc.) can be organised. If AXA is not contacted first, reimbursement is limited to the cost AXA would have incurred had it organised the service itself.
Unauthorized treatment
Costs for medical assistance or hospitalisation arranged without prior contact with AXA are reimbursed only up to the amount AXA would have paid had it organised the service itself; using the third-party payer network also requires prior contact with AXA.
Chronic conditions
Chronic illnesses that have caused disorders of the nervous, respiratory, circulatory, blood or kidney systems, and diagnosed conditions not yet healed and still under treatment at departure carrying a real risk of rapid deterioration, are excluded from cover.
Pregnancy
Consequences abroad of a pregnancy beyond the 26th week are excluded unless an unforeseeable complication occurs while abroad; voluntary termination of pregnancy for non-therapeutic reasons is also excluded.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Diagnosed conditions not yet healed and still under treatment at the departure date, which carry a real risk of rapid deterioration, are excluded, as are illnesses that could have been avoided by a vaccination the insured chose not to have before departure (except in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic).
Coverage duration limit
Horizon temporary covers a single stay of max. 45 days; Horizon annual covers trips of max. 90 consecutive days each, up to 180 days total per year; Premium covers trips of max. 180 consecutive days each. Travelling abroad for a continuous period of more than 180 days is excluded from cover.
