Pre existing conditions
Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded. However, they are covered if: (1) there is medical evidence that an external cause produced a sudden change in the illness picture, (2) there is no causal link between the pre-existing condition and the claim, or (3) for cancellation: the treating physician confirms no contraindication to travel at the time of booking and contract conclusion. For the 01/07/2023 T&Cs, a pre-existing illness is covered if it is stable at departure (no change in treatment, no hospitalisation, no worsening, and no medical contraindication confirmed by a doctor's report).ExcludedNot availableExcluded

From 28 weeks of pregnancy, the policy explicitly excludes related events. For cancellation, serious unexpected complications during pregnancy are a covered event. Voluntary termination of pregnancy is excluded.CoveredNot availablePregnancy is not covered as a standard physiological state; costs for diagnosis or treatment of pregnancy are excluded unless there is a clear and unforeseeable complication. Normal pregnancy is not grounds for repatriation. Childbirth costs and voluntary termination of pregnancy are explicitly excluded. Only in case of a clear and unforeseeable complication are medical costs and potential repatriation covered.

Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
In emergencies abroad, the insured must contact Touring (+32 2 286 31 47, 24h/7) as a priority. Touring and/or the agent must be notified within 24 hours of a claim event, except in cases of force majeure. All costs and assistance services are only reimbursable if previously authorised by Touring or the agent. The extension does not specify an explicit call deadline before seeking treatment; however, the base Daylife Protect assistance conditions apply. Assistance services must be contacted to organise repatriation and other logistics. Not availableAssistance must be requested during the trip directly through Ethias (Assistance phone line 24/7). Services not requested or organized by or with the agreement of Ethias during the trip do not give rise to retroactive reimbursement or compensation.
Purchase while abroad
Already-started trips cannot be insured. The travel assistance policy must be taken out at the latest on the day before departure and must cover the entire duration of the trip from the day of departure from the place of residence to the day of return. For the annual policy, coverage for other warranties begins at 0:00 on the departure date and ends at 24:00 on the return date as stated in the confirmation document. The Students Travel extension must be subscribed before departure or as part of the Daylife Protect contract. Purchasing while already abroad is not confirmed as possible in the official sources. Not availableThe policy cannot be purchased while already abroad. Coverage starts on the day following payment of the first premium and no earlier than the date stated in the special conditions.
Chronic conditions
Acute or chronic use of drugs, alcohol or substances not prescribed by a doctor constitutes a general exclusion. For travel assistance, existing chronic diseases are generally excluded unless an external cause produced a sudden change in the disease picture, or there is no causal link with the claim. For cancellation, chronic serious diseases are covered if there was no medical contraindication to travel at the time of booking and contract conclusion.Chronic diseases are not explicitly addressed in the Students Travel extension. The general exclusions of the base Daylife Protect assistance apply, which typically exclude pre-existing or chronic conditions known at time of departure. Not availableCosts related to the continuation of treatment of a previously known illness are not covered. Relapses of a disease contracted before departure abroad or mental illnesses that were already under treatment are explicitly excluded from reimbursement.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy is not considered an illness. Pregnancy complications are excluded from travel assistance from 28 weeks of pregnancy onwards. For cancellation, serious unexpected pregnancy complications are a covered event. Trips planned in the last 12 weeks of pregnancy where the pregnancy was unknown at booking may be covered for cancellation. Voluntary termination of pregnancy is always excluded.Pregnancy and pregnancy-related medical costs are not explicitly covered or excluded within the Students Travel extension document. Coverage would depend on the base Daylife Protect assistance conditions and applicable exclusions. Not availableNormal pregnancy is not covered. Costs for diagnosis or treatment of pregnancy are excluded unless there is a clear and unforeseeable complication. Childbirth costs and voluntary termination of pregnancy are excluded. Repatriation is not granted for pregnancy states unless a clear and unforeseeable complication arises.
Unauthorized treatment
Costs and assistance services not requested from or organised/authorised by Touring give no right to any reimbursement. If the insured refuses or delays a medically approved repatriation, cost coverage lapses from the moment of Touring doctor's approval. Failure to comply with obligations allows the insurer to reduce the indemnity by the amount of the prejudice suffered. The base Daylife Protect assistance exclusions remain applicable. Treatment taken without prior authorisation from or coordination by Inter Partner Assistance may not be covered, particularly for repatriation and organised assistance services. Not availableMedical costs and assistance services organized without prior approval from Ethias are not reimbursable. Reimbursement of custom duties, taxi and hotel costs incurred without prior approval of Ethias are also excluded.
Pre existing conditions
Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded from travel assistance. Exceptions apply when an external cause produced a sudden change in the illness picture, or when there is no causal link with the claim. Under the 01/07/2023 T&Cs, a pre-existing illness is covered if stable at departure (no change in para-medical treatment, no hospitalisation, no worsening, and no medical contraindication per a doctor's report). For cancellation, pre-existing conditions are covered if the treating physician confirms no contraindication to travel at booking and contract conclusion.Pre-existing conditions are not covered under the Students Travel extension. The general exclusions of the base Daylife Protect assistance conditions continue to apply, which typically exclude conditions known prior to departure. Not availablePre-existing conditions are explicitly excluded. No coverage for medical situations or conditions known before insurance inception, including continuation of prior treatment, relapses of a disease contracted before departure, or conditions that resulted in hospitalization within the last 6 months or at least 3 relapse episodes with hospitalization in the last 2 years.
Coverage duration limit
For temporary policies (single-trip): maximum 30 days coverage. For annual policies: maximum 95 consecutive days per trip, extendable by additional 30-day periods upon payment of extra premium, up to a maximum of 1 year total. If the insured must extend their stay for medical reasons, or if the validity period is exceeded due to unforeseen travel delay, the insurance remains in force without extra premium until the first possible return, maximum 31 days. The Students Travel extension is valid for a maximum continuous period of 12 months abroad. The contract is concluded for one year with tacit renewal; the Students Travel extension terminates automatically after one year. Not availableFor stays abroad exceeding 90 consecutive days, coverage under the annual formula applies only to incidents occurring within the first 90 days of the stay. This limit is extended to 120 days if a WHO-declared pandemic results in border closures on the 90th day. For stays beyond 90 days (or 120 in case of pandemic), the temporary policy must be used.
Proof and next steps
Direct payment policy
The insurer can advance guaranteed costs to the doctor or hospital abroad upon request. Costs below EUR 150 are never advanced. Reimbursement occurs after deduction of social security reimbursements; Touring pays the net balance after health fund intervention, on presentation of their statement and photocopies of original invoices.AXA reimburses eligible medical expenses after the fact (indemnity basis) subject to the EUR 50 deductible. Repatriation costs are fully covered and organised directly by AXA. There is no confirmed direct-billing network for routine medical treatment abroad.Medical expenses abroad: insurer advances hospitalization costs to hospital directly if necessary; the insured must reimburse the portion received from their mutual health insurance within 2 months of receiving invoices. For other expenses, the insured advances costs and is reimbursed on presentation of original receipts. Assistance services must be pre-authorized by the assistance center; unauthorized services are not reimbursed except in force majeure cases (ambulance, police towing).Ethias can pay medical costs either as a direct advance to foreign doctors or hospitals abroad, or reimburse the insured upon return to Belgium on presentation of original supporting documents. All repatriation and medical assistance must be pre-approved by Ethias; services organized without prior approval are not reimbursable.
