Direct payment

The assistance company (Europe Assistance Hungary) organizes and settles payments directly to medical providers up to the agreed policy limits. If the insured pays out-of-pocket, reimbursement can be claimed after returning to Bulgaria by submitting original documents. Medical expenses exceeding 150 currency units made without prior approval of the assistance company will not be reimbursed.

Medical Expenses (Accident or Acute Illness)

Covered

Covers outpatient and inpatient medical expenses resulting from accident or acute illness abroad, up to the agreed policy limit (range EUR/USD 2,000–50,000). Includes emergency ambulance transport, medical examinations, laboratory tests, X-ray diagnostics, prescribed medicines, and physician fees. For persons over 70, the maximum insured sum under basic cover is 30,000 currency units, with a sub-limit of 5,000 currency units for medical expenses due to acute illness.

Emergency Medical Treatment

Covered

Emergency medical treatment is covered as part of the basic coverage up to the agreed policy limit (EUR/USD 2,000–50,000). Covers stabilization of acute conditions, surgical intervention, physician fees, prescribed medicines, and hospitalization in a standard room. Only acute/emergency treatment is covered; non-urgent treatment or treatment that was the purpose of travel is excluded.

Medical Transport / Return to Bulgaria

Repatriation of Remains

In the event that the insured dies while traveling abroad, the assistance company organizes and covers the transport of the body or cremated remains to Bulgaria, to the locality designated by the next of kin. The limit is up to the agreed basic coverage limit but not exceeding 25,000 currency units. Storage costs, funeral rites, and burial expenses are not covered.

COVID-19 Treatment

Conditional

Upon diagnosis of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the insurer covers up to the agreed basic policy limit but not more than 5,000 currency units for: outpatient and inpatient medical treatment expenses; costs of returning to Bulgaria during inpatient treatment; and repatriation of remains. Coverage is included in the basic cover but subject to a sub-limit of 5,000 currency units.

Pre-existing Conditions

Excluded

Expenses for treatment of conditions (diseases) existing at the time of taking out the insurance are explicitly excluded, regardless of whether they were known to the insured at that time. Winter Sports Cover (Ski and Snowboard Package)

Optional add-on package covering ski/snowboard-related losses: (1) Own ski/snowboard equipment (skis/snowboard, bindings, boots, helmet) stolen by break-in or destroyed by fire, natural disaster, attempted break-in, or accident – limit up to 150 currency units total. (2) Hired replacement ski/snowboard equipment in case of theft or destruction of own equipment – limit up to 15 currency units per day, max 7 days. (3) Unused portion of ski facility pass due to accident or acute illness – limit up to 50 currency units per day, max 7 days. Note: ski/snowboard outside designated areas is defined as an extreme sport and excluded unless separately agreed.

Extreme/Adventure Sports Cover

Optional

Amateur participation in extreme sports and professional participation in any sport or organized sports competitions (as amateur or professional) are explicitly excluded from the standard policy. However, upon explicit agreement noted in the policy and payment of additional premium, the insurer can include these activities grouped by risk classes. Pregnancy Complications

Expenses related to pregnancy and/or complications arising from it, including abortion, are explicitly excluded. 24/7 Assistance Services

Covered

24/7 assistance services are provided as part of the basic coverage through the designated assistance company (Europe Assistance Hungary), accessible via telephone numbers listed in the policy. Services include: information on medical assistance (contacts for doctors, hospitals, emergency centres); tourist information; transmission of urgent messages and reservation changes; delivery of necessary medicines; provision of loans (for loss/theft of documents/bank cards); and posting of bail guarantees (for RTA legal aid). Assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week worldwide.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must notify the assistance company within 48 hours of the occurrence of the insured event, hospital admission, or other covered event. If the insured cannot do so personally, notification may be made by relatives, trusted persons, or medical staff.

Unauthorized treatment

The insurer does not reimburse medical expenses exceeding 150 currency units incurred without prior approval from the assistance company. Transport costs or return-to-Bulgaria costs incurred without assistance company approval are also not covered.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance contract must be concluded exclusively before the start of travel abroad, with the starting point located in the Republic of Bulgaria. It is not possible to purchase the insurance after travel has commenced. If concluded in violation of this rule without explicit insurer consent, the insurer may terminate the contract within one month of becoming aware, and no compensation shall be due for any event that has already occurred.

Chronic conditions

Expenses for treatment of diseases existing at the time of insurance conclusion are not covered, regardless of whether they were known to the insured at that time. Routine, prophylactic, and scheduled medical examinations and tests are also excluded.

Pregnancy

Expenses related to pregnancy and/or its complications, including abortion, are explicitly excluded. Complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the post-natal period are also not considered accidents under the accident clause and are excluded from coverage.

Pre-existing conditions (diseases present at the time of concluding the policy) are explicitly excluded from coverage regardless of whether the insured was aware of them. Only persons in good health at the time of policy conclusion who are medically fit to travel are eligible for insurance.

Coverage duration limit

For a single-trip policy, the maximum period of insurance coverage extension cannot exceed a total of 12 months. For the Multi-Trip option (annual policy), each individual trip may last up to 30, 60, or 90 consecutive days abroad, with a total stay abroad not exceeding 180 days per year. The Multi-Trip option is available for persons aged 6 months to 75 years at the date of policy conclusion and covers only basic cover risks and assistance services. Medical expenses incurred more than 15 days after the occurrence of the acute illness or accident are not covered.
