Direct payment

Claims are handled directly by AIG Europe S.A. (Cyprus Branch). Policyholders must notify AIG or their intermediary as soon as reasonably possible in the event of a loss. No explicit direct-payment-to-repairer policy is stated in the IPID.

Geographic scope

CY

Primary coverage in Cyprus (including occupied territories for own-damage). Third-party liability cover required by law applies indefinitely in any EU member state or Multilateral Guarantee Agreement signatory state. All other covers apply for up to 30 days in EU/MGA states.

Unique selling points

  • Policy explicitly covers loss or damage occurring in the occupied territories of Cyprus — a gap most Cyprus motor insurers exclude.
  • 24-hour road assistance and 24-hour accident assistance are included as standard in all three cover tiers.
  • Third-party liability limits of €36,350,000 (personal injury) and €1,220,000 (property damage) significantly exceed Cyprus statutory minimums.
  • Policies are issued in clear English or Greek language, making documentation accessible to both local and expatriate policyholders.
  • Premium instalment payment available when policy premium exceeds €300, with multiple payment methods including direct debit and card.

Key conditions

territorial_scope

Primary coverage in Cyprus, including loss or damage to the Motor Vehicle in the occupied territories of Cyprus. Third-party liability cover required by law applies indefinitely in any EU member state or Multilateral Guarantee Agreement signatory state. All other covers apply for up to 30 days in EU/MGA states. Road and accident assistance applies only in government-controlled areas of Cyprus and the Sovereign Base Areas.

green_card_rules

The policy provides full third-party liability cover as required by law in all EU member states and states signatory to the Multilateral Guarantee Agreement, valid indefinitely. The digital Green Card has been valid in Cyprus since January 2025. Other covers beyond TPL apply for up to 30 days in those territories.

driver_restrictions

All drivers must hold a valid driving licence for any Motor Vehicle being driven and must follow the conditions of that licence. Any loss or damage whilst the Motor Vehicle is driven by a person not specified as an authorised driver on the policy schedule is excluded. An additional excess applies for young and inexperienced drivers. Driving another car cover is limited to Cyprus only and applies provided that the other car does not belong to or is hired by the policyholder, their spouse, employer or partner.

claim_notification_deadline

The policyholder must notify AIG or their intermediary as soon as reasonably possible in the event of loss or damage to the Motor Vehicle. No specific number of days deadline is stated in the IPID beyond this reasonableness standard.

bonus_malus_rules

Cyprus has legislated a bonus-malus framework for motor insurance, but there is no centralized statutory scale; each insurer applies its own individual merit-rating system. AIG Cyprus applies experience-based pricing adjustments. An optional no-claim bonus protection add-on is available, covering up to 2 claims within a period of 3 years without loss of the accumulated no-claim discount. An additional excess applies for young and inexperienced drivers. No further bonus-malus scale details are published in the IPID.
