Key conditions

territorial_scope

MTPL covers claims arising in the territory of EU/EEA member states and other states designated by the assembly of the Czech Insurers' Bureau (ČKP), as well as states listed (not crossed out) on the green card. In the Czech Republic, proof of insurance is verified electronically via the ČKP database; a physical green card is not required domestically. Since 1 January 2025 an electronic green card is also accepted abroad.

green_card_rules

A green card is issued to the policyholder upon concluding MTPL insurance and is renewed before expiry. It certifies the existence of valid MTPL coverage and is required at roadside checks abroad. As of 1 January 2025, the green card may be presented in electronic form in foreign countries. In the Czech Republic, police and authorities verify coverage directly via the ČKP online database, eliminating the need for a physical document domestically.

driver_restrictions

The insurer may seek recourse against the insured in cases specified by ZPOV, including: driving without a valid licence, driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances, refusing a sobriety test, or using the vehicle for illegal activities. The insurance covers liability of any person operating the insured vehicle with the policyholder's consent.

claim_notification_deadline

The insured must notify the insurer of a loss event without undue delay (bez zbytečného odkladu). In cases not requiring police attendance, the insured must complete and submit a joint accident record. Within 30 days of discovering the loss, the insured must notify the insurer. The insurer must begin investigation without undue delay and complete it within 3 months; if this is not possible, it must inform the claimant of the reasons. Payment is due within 15 days of concluding the investigation.

bonus_malus_rules

The insurer applies a bonus/malus system based on the claims-free period (rozhodná doba). Each claim event reduces the decisive period by 24 months; the decisive period is measured in completed months of uninterrupted insurance. Discounts (bonus) range from 27% (12–23 months) up to 55% (132+ months), while surcharges (malus) range from 25% (M1) to 150% (M5). The system is not applied to policies with a term shorter than 12 months. Confirmed claims-free history from other Czech or foreign insurers can be transferred within the same vehicle category.
