Key conditions

territorial_scope

Coverage is valid in the Republic of Estonia and all Contracting States of the European Economic Area (EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), the Swiss Confederation, and other countries listed on the Green Card. For travel within the EEA or Switzerland, the standard MTPL policy suffices; a Green Card is required for travel outside the EEA.

green_card_rules

The Green Card is issued free of charge for the duration of the policy validity. It is required when traveling to countries outside the European Economic Area including Ukraine, United Kingdom, Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia, and Turkey. As of 1 June 2023, Green Cards issued for Estonian vehicles are no longer valid in Russia and Belarus; specific border insurance must be purchased instead.

driver_restrictions

Any person driving the vehicle listed on the policy may be covered. However, if the policy specifies the vehicle's use as a standard passenger vehicle, the vehicle may not be used for activities requiring special conditions such as courier, taxi, or rental services. Usage outside the specified scope may result in a recourse claim by the insurer against the at-fault party.

claim_notification_deadline

The insurer must be notified of a traffic accident immediately (without delay). The at-fault party must submit the coordinated accident statement to the insurer within five days. For direct compensation claims submitted to the policyholder's own insurer, the claim must be submitted within 30 days of the damage occurring and the indemnity must not exceed 10,000 EUR.

bonus_malus_rules

Premiums are calculated based on the insurance and claims history of the vehicle owner or responsible user, alongside vehicle technical specifications, usage, and population register data. Premiums typically increase in the year following an insurance claim. Conversely, premiums may decrease if no claims were made during the previous period. The motor insurance history is visible to all participants in the Estonian insurance market, so claims made with one insurer can affect premiums with another insurer.
