If
If is a motor third-party liability insurance for the EE market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Insurer compensates the injured third party directly; recourse against the at-fault driver applies in cases of intentional damage or driving under the influence. Since 2015, the injured party may handle the claim with their own insurer if only vehicles were damaged and both vehicles are registered in Estonia.

Valid in Estonia, European Economic Area member states, and other countries indicated on the green card (Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, United Kingdom, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine)

Bodily injury liability (personal injury)
Covered
Maximum compensation per insured event for bodily injury or health damage caused to third parties: EUR 6,450,000 (for incidents on or after 15 July 2024; previously EUR 5,600,000), regardless of the number of victims.

Legal defence
Excluded
Legal defence coverage is not part of the statutory MTPL product offered by If in Estonia. The policy is governed entirely by the Motor Insurance Act (Liikluskindlustuse seadus) and no separate legal defence benefit is mentioned.
Green card (international insurance certificate)
Covered
The green card is issued as a document proving valid MTPL coverage for travel abroad. It is required when travelling outside the EEA to countries such as Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, United Kingdom, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Coverage outside EEA equals Estonian cover level. Green cards for Russia and Belarus are no longer issued from 1 April 2023.
Free towing/roadside assistance
Covered
Free towing service is included with If MTPL for passenger cars, vans, motorcycles, and mopeds within the EU. The accident-damaged vehicle is towed to the nearest parking location or workshop. Available once per insured event, 24/7 by calling +372 777 1211.
At-fault driver medical expenses
Covered
Medical treatment costs of the driver who caused the accident at a medical institution are covered under the statutory MTPL policy, as explicitly stated in the IPID.
Passenger personal injury
Covered
Bodily injury to passengers caused by the insured vehicle is covered under the statutory bodily injury liability limit of EUR 6,450,000 per event (for incidents on or after 15 July 2024). Passengers are third parties under Estonian MTPL law.
Key conditions
territorial_scope
Coverage is valid in Estonia, all European Economic Area member states, and in non-EEA countries listed on the green card: Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, United Kingdom, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Green cards for Russia and Belarus are no longer issued from 1 April 2023 and coverage there is not available.
green_card_rules
The green card (international insurance certificate) proves valid MTPL coverage abroad. Within the EEA, the standard policy document or digital confirmation suffices. Outside the EEA, the green card must be carried physically. It can be ordered via the If self-service portal or by calling +372 777 1211. UK travel requires a green card from 1 January 2021 onwards; an additional premium may apply for UK coverage (not applied in Estonia).
driver_restrictions
There are no named-driver restrictions under statutory Estonian MTPL. Any person driving the vehicle with the owner's or authorised user's permission is covered. However, the insurer has a right of recourse against the at-fault driver if the damage was caused intentionally or if the driver was under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or other substances.
claim_notification_deadline
The insurer must be notified of a traffic accident without delay and its instructions followed. When the injured party is claiming from their own insurer (direct settlement), the accident must be reported within 30 days of the insured event. The damaged vehicle and other property must be preserved in their post-accident condition until the insurer's instructions are received.
bonus_malus_rules
The premium is calculated based on the vehicle owner's or authorised user's claim history. Claim-free years abroad (in another country) are also taken into account if a foreign claim-history certificate is provided. Driving under someone else's name (e.g. registering a young driver's car under a parent's name) affects the parent's bonus-malus class if the young driver causes a claim.
