Direct payment

Fennia typically settles medical and repair costs directly with healthcare and service providers rather than reimbursing the policyholder, and reserves the right to choose the treatment facility or repair shop used.

Geographic scope

European Economic Area (EEA) plus Green Card countries

Valid in all EEA states on the strength of the Finnish MTPL policy alone; valid in non-EEA Green Card countries (e.g. Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine) with a Green Card issued by Fennia.

Unique selling points

  • MTPL no-claims bonus can reach up to 83% in as little as four years.
  • The same bonus percentage applies automatically to every car the policyholder owns.
  • Bonusturva protects the maximum bonus level so the first claim doesn't reduce it.
  • Autoapu 24h roadside support line is available around the clock in Finland and abroad.
  • Premium is refunded in full for the entire period the vehicle is taken off the road (seisontavakuutus).

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

unlimited

Covers personal injuries caused by the use of the insured vehicle in traffic, with no upper limit under Finnish law; includes medical costs, incapacity benefits, disability compensation and survivor's pension.

Source

Property damage liability

€5,000,000

Covers property damage caused to the innocent third party by the use of the insured vehicle; the statutory maximum is EUR 5 million per liable insurance policy per event.

Legal expenses cover

Excluded

Legal expenses insurance (oikeusturvavakuutus) is not part of the statutory MTPL policy; it is only available as part of Fennia's voluntary Casco packages (e.g. Premiumkasko, Laaja Fenniakasko, osakasko).

Green Card

Covered

Fennia issues a Green Card certificate confirming that the Finnish MTPL cover is valid abroad; recommended for travel outside the Nordic countries and effectively required in certain listed non-EEA Green Card countries.

Roadside assistance / towing

Excluded

Towing and roadside assistance costs are not covered by MTPL alone; customers with only liikennevakuutus can order towing at a discounted rate through Fennia's partner network via the Autoapu 24h phone service, but the cost itself is only reimbursed if a Casco autopalveluvakuutus is also in force.

Driver's own personal injury

unlimited

Uniquely in Finland, MTPL also covers the insured vehicle's own driver for personal injuries sustained in a traffic accident, regardless of fault, with no upper limit; compensation may be reduced or refused if the driver was intoxicated (blood alcohol at least 1.2 per mille) or grossly negligent.

Passenger personal injury

unlimited

Covers personal injuries sustained by passengers in the insured vehicle involved in a traffic accident, with no upper limit.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Valid throughout the EEA on a single premium; in non-EEA Green Card countries the policy is valid as third-party liability cover based on the Green Card, or without one where not required.

Green card rules

Fennia issues the Green Card free of charge for travel outside the Nordic countries; recommended (and in some listed countries such as Turkey, Ukraine or Morocco effectively required) whenever the vehicle is driven outside the Nordics.

Driver restrictions

If the vehicle's registered owner and its principal user live at different addresses, only the principal user - not the owner - may take out the insurance policy.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder must notify Fennia without undue delay of a traffic accident; the claim must in any case be presented within three years of the claimant becoming aware of the damage, and no later than ten years after the event.

Bonus-malus rules

Fennia's MTPL no-claims bonus can reach up to 83% in as little as four years, and the same bonus level applies automatically to all of the policyholder's cars.
