Medical evacuation
Covered
Medical evacuation is covered as part of the sairauskuljetus (medical transport) benefit with no monetary cap, subject to prior approval from Pohjola Travel Emergency Service. If local treatment abroad would be significantly more expensive than equivalent Finnish treatment, the insurer may require the insured to return to Finland for treatment at insurer's cost.
Repatriation of mortal remains (Vainajan kotiinkuljetus)
Covered
If the insured dies during the trip, reasonable repatriation costs to Finland or burial costs abroad are covered regardless of the cause of death. Covered under clause 8.2.6.

No specific exclusion for COVID-19 is stated in the policy terms.
Pre-existing conditions – sudden acute deterioration
Conditional
Illnesses that began before the trip are not considered travel illnesses and are generally not covered. However, if a pre-existing condition suddenly and unexpectedly deteriorates during the trip in a way that was not probable or foreseeable according to general medical understanding, acute first-aid-type treatment at the destination is covered for up to 7 days from the start of treatment. Extra travel costs or repatriation for pre-existing condition deterioration are not covered.
Winter sports coverage
Conditional
Recreational skiing on marked pistes is covered under the standard policy. Freestyle skiing, speed/downhill racing, off-piste skiing (outside marked pistes), and ski jumping are excluded under clause 5.2. A separate sports extension (urheilulaajennus) is available for risky or competitive winter sports.
Adventure and high-risk sports
Excluded
The following activities are explicitly excluded from the standard policy under clause 5.2: martial arts and combat sports, power/strength sports, aerial sports (skydiving, paragliding, hang gliding, hot-air ballooning, ultralight aircraft), bungee jumping, mountain/rock/ice climbing, scuba and free diving, freestyle skiing / speed/downhill racing / off-piste skiing, wing suit / kite surfing, ocean sailing, and wilderness expeditions abroad. A separate sports extension is available.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy and infertility treatments are excluded from travel illness coverage. However, a sudden and urgent change in pregnancy condition during the trip that requires immediate treatment is covered, provided the change was not probable or foreseeable according to general medical experience (clause 6.2).
Travel liability insurance (Matkavastuuvakuutus)
Optional
Covers personal liability for bodily injury or property damage caused to third parties during travel as a private individual, where the insured is legally obligated to pay compensation. Also covers damage to temporarily rented bicycles, scooters, mopeds, snowmobiles, ATVs, balance scooters, jet skis (up to EUR 500) and rented skis/poles/snowboards abroad (up to 14 days, max EUR 500). Deductible EUR 150. Maximum EUR 170,000 per claim. Included automatically with the luggage insurance (matkatavaravakuutus) but is an optional add-on when taken as standalone traveller's insurance.

24/7 Travel Emergency Service (Matkahätäpalvelu)
Covered
Pohjola Travel Emergency Service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on +358 102 530 011 in Finnish, Swedish and English. Services include: guidance to reliable doctors/hospitals abroad, payment commitments for hospital treatment, surgery and expensive procedures, personal support in illness or injury situations.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
In non-emergency situations, the insured should contact Pohjola Travel Emergency Service (+358 102 530 011) before seeking treatment abroad to obtain a payment commitment and guidance to a reliable provider. In genuine emergencies, seek immediate medical help first. A payment commitment is required specifically before medical repatriation and certain major procedures.
Unauthorized treatment
If the insured undergoes repatriation or other approved expensive treatment without prior insurer approval (etukäteishyväksyntä), the insurer is only obligated to pay the amount that would have corresponded to the cost of transporting the insured to Finland and treatment in Finland. The insurer may also require the insured to return to Finland for treatment if local costs would be significantly higher than equivalent Finnish treatment.
Purchase while abroad
The fixed-term travel insurance (Pohjola Määräaikainen matkavakuutus) must be purchased and paid before departure from Finland. Coverage begins from the moment payment is made. The insurance cannot be purchased or extended while already abroad under the standard terms.
Chronic conditions
Chronic illnesses and conditions that started before the trip are not travel illnesses and are not covered under the standard policy. A sudden, unexpected and unforeseeable acute deterioration of a pre-existing chronic condition during the trip is covered only as acute first-aid-type treatment at the destination, for up to 7 days from the start of treatment. No repatriation or extra travel costs are covered for pre-existing condition deterioration.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy and infertility investigations or treatment are excluded from travel illness coverage. Exception: a sudden and urgent change in pregnancy condition requiring immediate treatment during the trip is covered, provided it was not probable or foreseeable according to general medical experience. The insured must belong to the Finnish national health insurance (Kela) to be covered by the traveller's insurance component.
pre_existing_conditions
Conditions that started or whose first symptoms appeared before the trip are not travel illnesses and are generally not covered. Coverage is limited to acute first-aid-type treatment at the destination for sudden, unexpected, unforeseeable deterioration, for up to 7 days from the start of treatment. Pre-existing conditions may require a health declaration (terveysselvitys) when applying for continuous travel insurance (jatkuva matkavakuutus).
coverage_duration_limit
The fixed-term travel insurance (Pohjola Määräaikainen matkavakuutus) is valid for a maximum of 3 months (approximately 90 days) from the start of the trip. Coverage ends at the latest 3 months after the trip starts even if the trip continues. If return to Finland is delayed due to reasons beyond the insured's control, coverage is extended by 48 hours. A short domestic stay (under 30 days) does not interrupt a trip that has already exceeded 3 months if the intention is to return to the same destination; however, illnesses starting during such a domestic stay are not covered as travel illnesses.
