ERGO Reiseversicherung
ERGO Reiseversicherung is a travel insurance for the DE market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
ERGO issues a cost-guarantee letter (Kostenübernahmegarantie) directly to the treating hospital for medically necessary inpatient treatment. ERGO settles the bill directly with the hospital. If ERGO is not liable for the full amount, any advances made must be repaid by the insured within one month of invoicing. Coverage limits
Medical expenses (abroad)
Covered
Covers costs of medically necessary treatments performed or prescribed by a doctor abroad, including inpatient hospital stays, outpatient treatments, surgeries, X-ray diagnostics, radiation and physical therapies, medication and dressings, alternative treatments (when no conventional medicine available). Coverage is unlimited in sum. Treatments exceeding medically necessary levels may be reduced to a reasonable amount. Fees must not exceed the level customary in the country of treatment.
SourceEmergency medical treatment
Covered
Covered under the general medical expenses benefit (Part C). The 24/7 emergency hotline (+49 89 4166-1010) is available for all medical emergencies during travel. ERGO issues cost-guarantee letters directly to hospitals. The insured must contact the emergency hotline before beginning inpatient treatment or repatriation.
SourceInpatient hospitalization
Covered
Costs for inpatient hospital stays abroad are covered as part of medically necessary treatment (Part C §2.3 A). If expected stay exceeds 5 days, ERGO organizes on request the travel of a close person to the hospital and back, covering travel costs. A daily hospital allowance of €50 (max. 30 days) is available as an alternative to cost reimbursement, if elected at the start of treatment.
SourceOutpatient treatment
Covered
Outpatient treatments abroad are covered as part of medically necessary treatment (Part C §2.3 B), including doctors' visits, diagnostics, medication, physical therapies and aids first needed during travel (e.g. crutches, wheelchair rental). Fees billed must not exceed the level customary in the country. Treatment costs in Germany are reimbursed at GOÄ/GOZ rates.
SourceEmergency dental treatment
Covered
Covers pain-relieving dental treatments including simple fillings, repairs of existing dentures/prostheses, and provisional dentures/prostheses following an accident abroad (Part C §2.3 H, I, J). Cosmetic or elective dental treatment is not covered.
SourceMedical transport (in-country)
Covered
Covers costs of medically necessary patient transport to a suitable hospital abroad (Part C §5.3): for inpatient admission and for initial outpatient emergency treatment. Also covers transfer transport from initial care facility to a more suitable hospital abroad (Part C §5.4).
SourceMedical repatriation / evacuation
Covered
ERGO organizes and covers costs of medically reasonable and justifiable repatriation using medically appropriate transport means to the insured's home address or nearest suitable hospital. Baggage transport home is also included. Costs for a travelling companion (who must also be ERV travel medical insured at the time) are covered. If still unfit to travel after the trip end date, treatment costs abroad continue to be covered until the insured is transportable (Part C §5.1, §5.2, §6).
SourceRepatriation of remains
Covered
Upon request of the insured's relatives, ERGO organizes and covers the cost of repatriation of the deceased to their last place of residence before trip departure. Alternatively, ERGO organizes and covers burial abroad up to the equivalent cost of repatriation. Baggage is also returned home (Part C §12).
SourceSearch, rescue and recovery costs
Covered
Search, rescue and recovery costs are covered up to €10,000, provided they arise due to illness, as a consequence of an accident, or due to death (Part C §14).
SourceCOVID-19 treatment
Covered
Unexpected and severe COVID-19 illness, as well as death due to COVID-19, are covered as insured events under the travel medical insurance (Part C), even though COVID-19 was classified as a pandemic by the WHO. Routine/expected COVID-19 treatments or those known to be necessary before departure are not covered.
SourcePre-existing conditions
Conditional
Treatments that the insured already knew to be necessary before the start of the trip (e.g. dialysis, scheduled procedures) are explicitly excluded (Part C §17 B). However, an unexpected and serious deterioration of a pre-existing condition is covered, provided there was no treatment for that condition in the 6 months before the trip start (routine check-ups, stable medication dosage, and dialysis are not counted as treatment). Exception: if the trip is undertaken because a spouse, life partner, or first-degree relative has died, coverage may apply (Part C §17 B).
SourceWinter sports cover
Covered
Winter sports are not explicitly listed as an exclusion in the travel medical policy (Part C). Medical expenses arising from winter sports accidents (e.g. skiing, snowboarding) are covered under the standard medical expenses benefit, as confirmed by example case in official marketing materials (snowboarding accident: €8,149 covered). Extreme sports (Extremsportarten: rafting, free climbing, canyoning, abseiling, paragliding, skydiving, etc.) are explicitly excluded from the accident insurance sub-section (Part E) but not from the travel medical section.
SourceAdventure/extreme sports cover
Conditional
Extreme sports (Extremsportarten as defined in the glossary: rafting, free climbing, canyoning, abseiling/rappelling, cave exploration, mountaineering, hang gliding, paragliding, skydiving) are excluded under the accident insurance (Part E §7.1 E) and travel liability insurance (Part F §2.17). However, the travel medical insurance section (Part C) does not list extreme sports as an explicit exclusion. Treatment costs arising from extreme sport injuries may therefore be covered under Part C if medically necessary, but this is not explicitly confirmed for all scenarios.
SourcePregnancy complications
Covered
The travel medical policy covers costs of medical treatment for pregnancy complications abroad; medically indicated terminations; childbirth up to and including the 36th week of pregnancy; treatment for newborns in case of premature birth up to and including the 36th week; and miscarriage up to and including the 36th week (Part C §3.1). If pregnancy occurs during the trip, up to 5 prenatal check-ups, 2 ultrasounds, treatment of complications, inpatient or outpatient delivery, obstetric costs, and postnatal care are also covered (Part C §3.2). Pregnancy treatment after the 36th week is excluded.
SourcePersonal liability (travel)
Optional
Personal liability during travel for bodily injury and property damage claims by third parties is available as a separate module (Part F). This is an add-on to the travel medical insurance and is not included in the standalone Reisekranken-Versicherung. The insured is protected for private liability as a private individual from daily life hazards during travel. Deductible (if applicable): €150 per claim for property damage. ERGO both defends against unjustified claims and settles justified ones promptly.
SourceLegal assistance
Excluded
Legal assistance or legal protection insurance is not included in or offered as part of the travel medical insurance product. It is not listed among the available modules in the VB-ERV 2023 policy document.
Source24/7 emergency hotline and assistance
Covered
A 24-hour, 365-days-a-year emergency hotline (+49 89 4166-1010) is included in the travel medical insurance. The hotline provides: coordination of hospital cost-guarantee letters, organization of medical repatriation, facilitation of communication between treating doctors and the insured's home doctor, children repatriation organization, assistance in finding German/English-speaking doctors, psychological emergency counselling by telephone, assistance in replacing travel documents, and help in cases of lost travel funds. Insured must contact the hotline before starting inpatient treatment or before repatriation (Part C §18.2).
SourceKey conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured (or their legal successors in the event of death) must contact the 24/7 emergency hotline without undue delay (unverzüglich): before beginning any inpatient hospital treatment; before any medical repatriation is carried out; and before any repatriation of remains. Failure to do so may reduce or eliminate the insurer's obligation to pay (Part C §18.2).
Unauthorized treatment
If treatment exceeds the medically necessary level, ERGO may reduce its reimbursement to an appropriate amount. Fees and charges must not exceed those generally considered customary and reasonable in the country of treatment; otherwise ERGO may reduce reimbursement to the local standard rates (Part C §2.4). Intentional breach of obligations leads to full loss of coverage; grossly negligent breach may lead to proportional reduction (Part C §19).
Purchase while abroad
Insurance cannot be taken out once the insured is already abroad. The travel medical insurance must be purchased before departure. The contract can be concluded up to the last day before travel commencement. For annual policies, purchase is possible at any time, but coverage for medical treatment only begins upon commencement of the trip (Part C, General Terms §3).
Chronic conditions
Known chronic diseases that require regular treatment are generally excluded. This includes treatments known to be necessary before departure (e.g. regular dialysis, scheduled surgeries). However, an unexpected and serious worsening of a chronic/pre-existing condition is covered if there was no treatment for the condition in the 6 months prior to trip start. Routine check-ups, stable medication at unchanged dosage, and dialysis do not count as 'treatment' for this purpose (Part C §17 B, §2.1 definition).
Pregnancy
Pregnancy complications, medically indicated terminations, and childbirth abroad are covered up to and including the 36th week of pregnancy. After the 36th week, treatment for complications, terminations, and deliveries are excluded. If pregnancy occurs during the trip, up to 5 prenatal check-ups, 2 ultrasounds, and postnatal care are also covered (Part C §3). Planned prenatal check-ups in the guest country are excluded for foreign visitor insurance (Part G §13 M).
pre_existing_conditions
Treatments that were known to be necessary before trip start (e.g. dialysis, scheduled procedures) are explicitly excluded. An unexpected, serious deterioration of a pre-existing condition is covered if there was no active treatment for it in the 6 months before trip start; routine check-ups, stable medication at unchanged dosage, and dialysis are not considered 'treatment'. Exception: if the trip is undertaken because a spouse, life partner, or first-degree relative has died, coverage may apply despite planned treatment needs (Part C §17 B).
coverage_duration_limit
For annual policies: each individual trip is covered for a maximum of 45 days. Coverage for medical treatment ends after the first 45 days of any trip. For single-trip policies: coverage is for the full insured trip duration, provided it is planned for a maximum of 12 months and the insured's habitual residence is not relocated abroad (General Terms §2.2 F, §4.1). If the insured is unable to travel home for reasons beyond their control, coverage is extended until return is possible (General Terms §3.1 D, §3.2 C).
