Greece and internationally (EU member states and Green Card signatory countries)

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The policy is valid in Greece and, for the compulsory MTPL liability cover only, in all EU member states and countries signatory to the Multilateral Guarantee Agreement (Green Card system). Optional coverages applicable in Greece are automatically suspended when the vehicle travels abroad and are reinstated upon repatriation. For travel outside the Green Card area, additional written authorisation from AIG is required.

Green card rules

AIG provides the Green Card (international insurance certificate) free of charge upon request by calling 210 8127600. The Green Card certifies that the insured vehicle holds valid MTPL insurance recognised in EU member states and all countries party to the Green Card system. Outside the Green Card area, coverage applies only with prior written consent from AIG.

Driver restrictions

Drivers without a valid driving licence (including expired licences) are excluded. Drivers holding a foreign licence not recognised in Greece are excluded. Drivers under the age of 25 or with less than one year of driving experience may face restrictions or surcharges on optional coverages. Drivers over 70 years of age may face restrictions on new 24-hour medical protection coverage.

Claim notification deadline

Third-party claims arising from compulsory MTPL liability are subject to a 5-year statute of limitations from the date of the accident. Claims between the insurer and the policyholder arising from MTPL or optional coverages are subject to a 4-year limitation period from the end of the year in which they arose. AIG commits to settling claims within 5 working days of receiving all required documentation. The 24-hour claims line is 210 940 8676 and 211 107 5708.

Bonus-malus rules

AIG applies a claims-experience discount system. Careful drivers with no at-fault claims can receive up to 20% discount on premiums. Additional discounts include: 15% for annual policies, 10% for insuring 3 or more vehicles, 5% for 2 vehicles, 5% for hybrid vehicles, 10% for combined home and car insurance, 10% for combined personal accident insurance, 10% for insuring financial losses. An additional 5% discount is available for new vehicles with comprehensive cover. A 5% discount applies on the first policy renewal.
