Green Card (International Insurance Certificate)
Conditional
A vehicle normally stationed in Greece and leaving Greek territory must be equipped with a green card valid at minimum for EU/EEA member states and other countries whose National Insurance Bureaux are bound by the Unified Agreement. For third countries outside the EEA, a green card valid in those countries per Part II of the Unified Agreement is required. Applies only within Greek territory.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
Mandatory third-party liability cover is valid exclusively within the Hellenic Republic. For travel abroad, the insured must carry a green card valid for EU/EEA states and Unified Agreement countries. Optional covers (supplementary risks) are valid only within Greek territory, even if a green card for MTPL has been issued.
Green card rules
A vehicle normally stationed in Greece that exits Greek territory must be equipped with an international insurance certificate (green card) valid at minimum in EU/EEA member states and countries of the Unified Agreement (Section III). For third countries outside the EEA, the green card must additionally be valid under Section II of the Unified Agreement. Failure to carry the required green card makes the owner, holder and driver jointly and severally liable to the insurer and the International Insurance Bureau. Once a green card is issued, the policy cannot be cancelled for the duration of the green card.
Driver restrictions
Coverage is excluded for: (1) a driver who does not hold the legally required licence for the vehicle category being driven, including failure to renew an expired licence due to age or failure to replace a foreign licence with a Greek one for permanent Greek residents; (2) driving under the influence of alcohol or toxic substances within the meaning of Article 42 of the Greek Highway Code, where this causally contributed to the accident; (3) use of the vehicle for a purpose other than that stated in the policy and registration documents. Special surcharges of 30% additional premium apply (up to €2,000 maximum) for drivers under 23 years of age or holding a licence issued within the 12 months prior to the accident, if not declared at policy inception.
Claim notification deadline
In the event of a loss, the policyholder and/or insured must notify the company in writing, without culpable delay and no later than eight (8) working days from the date the loss event came to their knowledge. Any judicial or extrajudicial document related to the loss must be forwarded to the company within eight (8) days. Culpable breach of this obligation gives the company the right to claim compensation up to €2,000.
Bonus-malus rules
A bonus-malus scale with categories 2–20 applies. The base category for a first-time insured vehicle is category 10. Each claim in a 12-month period causes an upward shift in category according to: 1 claim = +2 grades, 2 claims = +5 grades, 3 claims = +8 grades, 4 claims = +11 grades, 5 claims = +14 grades, 6 claims = +17 grades (maximum category 20). Each claim-free 12-month period results in a downward shift of one grade (minimum category 2). Adjustments are calculated on the base-category-10 premium. The company may freely revise category percentages at each policy anniversary. Young drivers under 23 or with licence less than 1 year are subject to a 30% surcharge if not declared.
