Key conditions
Territorial scope
MTPL coverage applies within Greek territory, all EU/EEA member states, and other states whose National Green Card Bureaux have co-signed the Multilateral Guarantee Agreement (Internal Regulations, Council of Bureaux) issued 15 March 1991. Coverage does not apply in airport areas where aircraft operate. Optional coverages (casco, fire, theft, etc.) apply only within Greek territory.
Green card rules
The Green Card (Πράσινη Κάρτα) serves as the international insurance certificate. The insured vehicle may travel within all states party to the Multilateral Guarantee Agreement without additional documentation. For covered states, the liability limit shall not exceed the minimum statutory limit of the host country or the Greek policy limit, whichever is higher. A Green Card is required when travelling outside EEA countries.
Driver restrictions
The insured must declare if any driver is under 23 years of age or obtained their licence for the first time within the last 12 months (New Driver). Failure to declare triggers additional surcharge premiums (20%-60%) and the right of recourse (25%-75% of indemnity). Drivers must hold a valid licence for the vehicle category. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in a causal connection to the accident is excluded. Coverage is void if the vehicle is used for a purpose other than that stated in the policy schedule and licence.
Claim notification deadline
For MTPL (third-party liability) claims: the insured must notify the Company in writing immediately and no later than 8 working days from the date of becoming aware of the damaging event. For optional coverage claims: 8 calendar days. Theft must be reported to the Police immediately and notified to the Company within 8 days of discovering the loss. Vehicle must be made available for inspection within 5 working days. All judicial or extrajudicial documents must be forwarded to the Company within 8 days of receipt.
Bonus-malus rules
Premiums are calculated based on multiple rating factors including engine displacement, use, vehicle type, seats, taxable horsepower, actual horsepower, area of circulation, vehicle age, number of claims at-fault, driving experience, date of licence acquisition, and age of policyholder/insured/driver. A bonus-malus system of discounts and surcharges applies per insurance period. The Company may adjust categories and rates at each annual renewal. Premiums are adjusted if mandatory minimum coverage limits are changed by law. A new driver surcharge of 20%-60% applies depending on age and licence duration.
