Coverage limits
Loss of or damage to the car
Covered
Comprehensive cover pays for loss of or damage to the car caused by accidental means, fire, theft or attempted theft; Third Party, Fire and Theft cover pays only for loss or damage caused directly by fire, self-ignition, lightning, explosion, theft or attempted theft (accidental damage is excluded under this tier). Payment is capped at the current market value of the car at the time of loss; no separate monetary limit is stated.
Total loss / write-off settlement
Covered
If the car is a total loss, Aviva pays a cash amount not exceeding the current market value of the car at the time of loss. New Car Replacement (same make and model) applies instead if the original and only owner insures the car from new, the car is stolen and not recovered or damaged in a single accident within 12 months of first registration, and repair/replacement cost exceeds 50% of the current Republic of Ireland new list price.
Partial loss / repair of the car
Covered
Aviva may repair or replace the car or any part of it using a repair service of its choice, or pay a cash amount not exceeding the cost its repair service states it would cost to repair the car, subject to the same peril coverage as own damage (Comprehensive vs Third Party, Fire and Theft).
Theft or attempted theft
Covered
Loss of or damage to the car caused directly by theft or attempted theft is covered under both Comprehensive and Third Party, Fire and Theft cover, capped at current market value; no payment is made where there are no signs of forced entry for related personal belongings claims.
Windscreen and window glass damage
unlimited
Endorsement PC71 extends cover to loss of or damage to windscreen or other car window glass (excluding sunroof/panoramic roof) and related bodywork scratching. There is no limit if Aviva's aligned windscreen repairers are used; a limit of €225 per event applies if any other repairer is used. Included as standard under Comprehensive; available only as an optional extra (extra premium payable) under Third Party, Fire and Theft.
Natural perils (fire, lightning, explosion, etc.)
Covered
Fire, self-ignition, lightning and explosion are named perils covered under both tiers as part of Section 1. Other natural events (e.g. storm/flood damage) fall under the broader 'accidental means' wording, which is only covered under Comprehensive cover; there is no separate named natural-perils limit.
Malicious damage / vandalism
Covered
Only in Comprehensive
Malicious damage to the car is not separately named under Section 1 but falls within the broad 'accidental means' cover under Comprehensive policies; it is also explicitly listed as a covered breakdown trigger under Section 6 (Breakdown Rescue). Not covered as own-damage under Third Party, Fire and Theft cover.
Breakdown Rescue
Covered
Included as standard (per IPID 'What is insured' and marketing materials). Covers mechanical breakdown, fire, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, punctures needing help, and lost/stolen/broken keys, with up to one hour's free roadside labour, towing to the nearest garage or the policyholder's own garage, 'finishing the journey' benefits, and electric vehicle out-of-charge recovery. Cover applies in the 32 counties of Ireland and in England, Scotland and Wales, but does not apply when the car is used abroad.
Courtesy / replacement car
Conditional
A free courtesy car is provided for up to 7 days while the car is being repaired following a claim (up to 10 days if the car is a write-off), but only if an Aviva Motor Services approved repairer is used; no courtesy car is provided otherwise. Separate replacement-car benefits of up to 48 hours also apply under Breakdown Rescue 'finishing the journey' and up to 5 days if the car is stolen and not recovered within 24 hours.
JourneyWise accident cover
€26,000
Optional personal accident cover (extra premium payable, and must be shown in the policy schedule to apply) paying €26,000 for death, total and permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes, or loss of one or more limbs, plus €130 per complete day as a hospital inpatient up to 20 days (max €2,600). Applies while in/getting into/out of a private car, as a fare-paying passenger in public transport, or as a pedestrian involved with a road vehicle, train or aircraft.
Key conditions
Driver age and experience limit
Any driver must hold a valid licence to drive the vehicle and comply with any restrictions, conditions or limits on that licence; learner permit holders must be accompanied at all times by a full licence holder. Optional 'Open Driving' endorsements (PC3/PC4) can restrict cover to drivers aged 25-70 holding a full EU or UK licence, or extend to named provisional licence holders.
Repair network requirements
Aviva Motor Services is Aviva's nationwide panel of approved garages; using this panel provides a free courtesy car (7 days, or 10 days if the car is a write-off), tow-in service, guaranteed repairs for as long as the car remains registered in the policyholder's name, and a Cleaned Car Guarantee. Windscreen repair/replacement is unlimited only when using Aviva's aligned windscreen repairers; other repairers are capped at €225.
Territorial scope
Cover applies to events in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands during the period of insurance, with an automatic extension of identical cover within the EU for up to 31 days in any period of insurance. Breakdown Rescue only applies in the 32 counties of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, and not when the car is used abroad.
Anti-theft requirements
The policyholder must take all reasonable steps to prevent loss or damage: the car must not be left unlocked or unattended with keys in the ignition or in the car, and windows or the sunroof must not be left open. Personal belongings must be placed in the locked boot, glove box or a closed storage compartment when the car is unattended; theft claims for personal belongings and child equipment are not paid if there are no signs of forced entry.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder or any covered person must let Aviva know immediately about any event which may give rise to a claim, with all relevant details, and immediately if they become aware of any prosecution or inquest connected with the event.
Deductible rules
The standard excess is €300 for comprehensive cover; policyholders can choose to increase (e.g. to €600 for a 5% premium discount) or decrease this amount. An additional excess of €2,500 applies if the policyholder fails to disclose that an insured driver has received penalty points. Under optional endorsement PC76, choosing not to use an Aviva aligned repairer for accidental damage, fire or theft claims triggers a first €1,000 excess.
