Coverage limits
Loss or damage to your car
Covered
Covers loss of or damage to your car and its accessories while in your car, up to the market value of your car. Applies under comprehensive cover or third party fire and theft cover where damage is caused by fire or theft. AXA will repair, replace or pay the cost of loss or damage. Market value is defined as the cost of replacing your car with another of the same make, model, age and similar mileage at the time of loss.
Total loss (salvage/write-off)
Covered
If your car is written off, AXA will settle the claim by replacing your car or paying the market value before damage. The car becomes AXA's property. A new car replacement is available if the car is stolen and not recovered within 28 days, or if repairs cost more than 60% of the manufacturer's retail list price, provided the car is less than one year old and you are the first owner.
Partial loss / accidental damage
Covered
Covers repair or replacement of parts lost or damaged in an accident up to market value. AXA may use non-manufacturer parts of similar standard and may repair with recycled parts where appropriate. If lost or damaged parts are unavailable, AXA will pay the equivalent manufacturer's latest price guide cost plus reasonable fitting costs.
Theft and attempted theft
Covered
Covers loss of or damage to the car caused by theft or attempted theft. If the car is stolen and not found, or is found but not worth repairing, AXA pays the market value including accessories and spare parts. Accessories and spare parts in a private garage are also covered. Exclusion: no cover if keys or keyless entry system are left unsecured or in/on an unattended car, or if the car was taken by a family or household member.
Broken glass / windscreen cover
Covered
Covers the cost of replacing or repairing broken or damaged glass in the windscreen or windows of the car, and scratches to bodywork caused by the glass breaking. If AXA's approved repairer is used, cover is unlimited. If the policyholder uses their own repairer, cover is limited to €400 (or €50 for a repair). A claim under this section does not affect the no-claims discount. Sunroofs, panoramic glass roofs, and mirror glass are excluded in the January 2025 wording. An excess applies if glass is replaced (no excess if repaired).
Fire, lightning and explosion
Covered
Loss or damage caused by fire, lightning or explosion is covered under both comprehensive and third party fire and theft policies. No excess applies to fire claims and fire claims do not affect the no-claims discount.
Malicious damage / vandalism
Covered
The Motor Rescue section explicitly covers theft, attempted theft or malicious damage as a triggering event. Under Section 1 (comprehensive cover), loss or damage to the car by accidental means is covered broadly; malicious damage (as distinct from theft) is covered under comprehensive. The IPID confirms loss or damage as a result of an accident, theft, attempted theft, fire, lightning or explosion up to market value.
Motor rescue / roadside assistance
Covered
24-hour roadside and driveway assistance in Ireland and the UK (excluding islands off the coast) covering electrical or mechanical breakdown, failure to start, accident, fire, theft, attempted theft, malicious damage, punctures, lost or stolen keys, keys locked in car, and running out of fuel or flat battery. For EVs, energy failure due to insufficient battery charge is also covered. AXA will send a repairer and provide up to one hour's labour at the scene. Towing to nearest repairer or charge point, accommodation (up to €50 per person / €200 total per January 2025 wording), or hire vehicle for up to 48 hours, or onward transport can be arranged. A claim under this section does not affect the no-claims discount. Must call 0818 7 365 24 first.
Replacement car
Covered
If the car is being repaired by an AXA Approved Repairer after an accident, AXA will provide a replacement car (usually an economy class 1-litre car) for up to 7 days under Section 1, or up to 35 days under Section 9 Extra Benefits. Alternatively AXA may pay up to €22 per day (including VAT) towards hiring a car, for up to 35 days. Not provided for windscreen claims, total loss, or accidents outside the Republic of Ireland. If the policyholder chooses not to use an AXA Approved Repairer, only a temporary replacement car is provided for the duration of repairs agreed by the AXA engineer.
Injury to driver (personal accident)
Optional
Optional cover available for an additional premium. Death benefit: €30,000. Total and permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes or loss of one or more limbs: €10,000. Temporary total disability: €280 per month (max 36 months). Hospital benefit (more than 6 days hospitalised as result of road-traffic accident): €130 per week (max 20 weeks). Named drivers also covered for death (€30,000) and loss of sight/limb (€10,000). Claim must be notified within 28 days of death or injury.
Key conditions
driver_age_experience_limit
An additional excess of €100 applies for all named drivers under 25 years of age (March 2023 wording). The January 2025 wording states the excess is as shown on the schedule without a fixed additional amount stated in the main text; drivers must hold the appropriate full driving licence. Open Driving (optional) covers drivers aged 25 to 70 holding a full EU/EEA or recognised licence exchange state driving licence. Third party cover while driving other cars requires the driver to be aged 25 or over.
repair_network_requirements
When using an AXA Approved Repairer, windscreen/glass cover is unlimited, a replacement car is provided, repairs carry a minimum three-year workmanship guarantee, and the policyholder can reduce their excess by €100. If the policyholder chooses their own repairer, glass cover is limited to €400 (€50 for repair only), and AXA will only pay what the AXA engineer estimates the repair would have cost at an approved repairer.
territorial_scope
Standard cover applies in the Republic of Ireland, UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Full comprehensive cover applies in Europe (EU member states, EEA states, and Switzerland as defined in January 2025 wording) for up to 31 consecutive days per period of insurance. If travel to Europe is more frequent or exceeds 31 consecutive days, the policyholder must contact their broker. Motor Rescue and driving other cars extensions do not apply outside Ireland and the UK.
anti_theft_requirements
Cover is voided for theft or attempted theft if the keys (or keyless entry system) are left unsecured or left in or on an unattended car. The car must be locked and security devices activated when unattended. All windows and sunroofs must be fully closed when the car is unattended.
claim_notification_deadline
Claims must be notified to AXA as soon as possible by phoning the 24-hour claims helpline on 0818 7 365 24. If the car is stolen, the Gardaí must also be notified. For injury to driver claims, notification must be given within 28 days of death or injury. Any letters or documents received in connection with a claim must be sent to AXA immediately before replying.
deductible_rules
The excess is the amount of a claim not covered by insurance for which the policyholder is responsible, as shown on the policy schedule. No excess applies to fire, lightning, explosion, theft or attempted theft claims, or to windscreen repair (no excess for repair; excess applies for replacement under January 2025 wording). No excess applies to Section 9 Extra Benefits or Section 10 Motor Rescue claims. The excess is not recoverable by AXA on the policyholder's behalf from third parties. Reducing the excess by €100 is available when using an AXA Approved Repairer (not available to DriveFirst policyholders per March 2023 wording).
