Direct payment

AIG Assistance Services can guarantee payment of in-patient hospital, clinic, nursing home, emergency repatriation or curtailment expenses directly to the provider once contacted and authorisation is given during a medical emergency abroad; unauthorised claims may be refused or reduced.

Geographic scope

Cover is available for one of three geographical areas selected at purchase: Europe (the continent of Europe west of the Ural Mountains, its neighbouring islands, and non-European Mediterranean-bordering countries excluding Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, Israel and Jordan); Australia and New Zealand (worldwide excluding USA, Canada and the Caribbean); or Worldwide including USA, Canada and the Caribbean.

The policy is only available to individuals ordinarily resident in the Republic of Ireland for at least six of the last twelve months and is void for non-residents. Each trip must begin and end in the Republic of Ireland (unless a One-Way policy is purchased). No cover applies to loss, injury, damage or legal liability arising from planned or actual travel in, to, or through Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Crimea, or the Donetsk (DNR) or Luhansk (LNR) regions of Ukraine, or to any destination allocated an 'Avoid non-essential travel' or 'Do not travel' status by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Unique selling points

  • Premier Plus provides unlimited emergency medical expenses cover while travelling abroad, well above the €1m-€5m limits on the other tiers.
  • Premier Plus policyholders pay no excess on any covered claim, and an excess waiver can be purchased on Budget or Premier policies to eliminate excesses that would otherwise apply.
  • 24-hour, 365-day emergency medical assistance line (AIG Assistance Services) that can authorise and guarantee payment of hospital costs abroad.
  • On Premier Plus, cancellation and curtailment claims are settled at the full invoice cost rather than being capped at a fixed sum insured.
  • A wide range of optional add-ons (winter sports, business, golf, wedding and natural catastrophe cover) allow the policy to be tailored to the trip.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

AIG Assistance Services must be contacted immediately if admitted to hospital as an in-patient likely to exceed 24 hours, if outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than €700, or before cutting short a trip or arranging early return; unauthorised claims may not be paid in full.

Unauthorized treatment

If AIG Assistance Services are not contacted for required authorisations (in-patient stays over 24 hours, outpatient treatment over €700, early return/curtailment), AIG may provide no cover or reduce the amount paid.

Purchase while abroad

Cover cannot start after the insured has left the Republic of Ireland; each trip must begin (and, unless a One-Way policy, end) in Ireland, so the policy cannot be purchased once already travelling.

Chronic conditions

Claims relating to a medical condition, illness or death related to a medical condition known about before taking out the policy are excluded as a pre-existing condition; diagnosed psychological or psychiatric disorders, anxiety or depression are separately excluded under General Exclusion 3.

Pregnancy

Cover applies to pregnancy-related cancellation/medical claims only up to 26 weeks pregnant during the trip, or where a doctor certifies unfitness to travel due to pregnancy complications arising after the policy was arranged; costs after 26 weeks are excluded.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

No cover is provided for medical conditions, illnesses or related deaths known about before the insurance was purchased, for travelling against medical advice, for travelling to receive treatment abroad, or where hospital investigation/treatment for an undiagnosed condition is pending or a terminal prognosis has been given.

Coverage duration limit

Single Trip: up to 120 consecutive days. Annual Multi-Trip: unlimited trips provided no single trip exceeds 31 days (Budget), 45 days (Premier) or 60 days (Premier Plus); winter sports covered up to 17 days per year. Extended Stay: one trip of up to 12 consecutive months.
