Covered
Covers medically necessary and unforeseen emergency treatment incurred during the journey. Any expenses incurred without prior agreement are not covered.
Hospitalisation
Covered
In-patient hospital fees are covered under the emergency medical and associated expenses section. The Irish Life Health policy covers the first €100,000; Allianz Assistance covers amounts above that up to €5 million. Insured must notify the 24-hour emergency assistance service immediately upon hospitalisation.
Outpatient Treatment
Covered
Outpatient emergency medical treatment is covered as part of the emergency medical and associated expenses section. The combined limit applies (€100,000 via Irish Life Health, up to €5 million combined via Allianz Assistance). Non-emergency or elective treatment is excluded.
Emergency Dental Treatment
Covered
Emergency dental costs incurred during the journey are covered under the emergency medical and associated expenses section. The IPID references dental costs as covered within the up to €5 million emergency medical limit. Routine dental treatment and the cost of replacing false teeth are excluded.
Emergency Medical Transportation
Covered
Covers emergency transport to the nearest appropriate medical facility as part of the emergency medical and associated expenses benefit. Included within the combined €5 million limit. Extra transport costs must be agreed with Allianz Assistance and must not be of a higher standard than those already used on the journey unless agreed.
Medical Repatriation / Evacuation
Covered
If medical advisers determine it is in the insured’s medical interests to return home or to a hospital or nursing home in their home country, transfer is normally by regular airline or road ambulance. An air ambulance is used where medically necessary in serious or urgent cases. The treating doctor’s certificate confirming fitness to travel is required. Repatriation decisions require prior agreement with Allianz medical assistance. Costs are within the combined €5 million emergency medical limit.
Repatriation of Remains
Covered
Costs related to repatriation in the event of death during the journey are covered under the emergency medical and associated expenses section. The IPID lists funeral and repatriation costs within the emergency medical expenses benefit of up to €5 million. A certified copy of the death certificate is required when making a claim.
Mountain Search and Rescue (Winter Sports)
Conditional
Mountain search and rescue service costs are covered when deemed medically necessary under the Winter Sports section (Section 11). This cover is included within the €5 million winter sports emergency medical limit. Winter sports cover is an optional paid upgrade and requires prior confirmation in writing from Allianz Assistance.
COVID-19 / Pandemic Disease Treatment
Covered
Emergency medical expenses arising from being diagnosed with an epidemic or pandemic disease such as COVID-19 are expressly covered under Section 10. Compulsory quarantine on the orders of a treating doctor is also covered. The standard combined limit of up to €5 million applies. Individual quarantine orders specifically targeting the insured are also covered under Section 1 for cancellation purposes.
Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
Excluded
Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered. The conditions and exclusions relating to the Irish Life Health Insurance policy also apply to this Allianz Assistance Travel Insurance policy. Any medical claim not covered by the Irish Life Health Insurance policy is also excluded here. Pre-existing medical screening is not currently offered, meaning the policy cannot be extended to cover pre-existing medical conditions.
Winter Sports Cover
Optional
Optional paid upgrade covering emergency medical and associated expenses up to €5 million for injuries sustained during winter sports, including mountain search and rescue when medically necessary. Also covers ski pack (up to €400), own ski equipment (up to €650), hired ski equipment (up to €300), delayed ski equipment (€20/day up to €300), and avalanche closure (€50/day up to €200). Cover for up to 31 days total during the period of insurance. Must be confirmed in writing by Allianz Assistance after payment of additional premium.
Sports and Leisure Activity Cover
Conditional
A broad list of sports and leisure activities is automatically covered, including scuba diving (to 30 metres with certificate or qualified instructor), surfing, mountain biking, hiking, glacier walking, jet skiing, wakeboarding, marathon running, and others as listed in the policy. Professional sporting activity, any kind of racing (except on foot), and manual work are excluded. Activities not listed may be covered on request by contacting Allianz Assistance; an extra premium may be required.
Pregnancy Complications
Conditional
Pregnancy complications are not explicitly called out as a named benefit or exclusion in the policy wording provided. Coverage would be subject to the conditions and exclusions of the Irish Life Health Insurance policy and would only apply if the complication constitutes a necessary and unforeseen medical emergency arising during the journey. Routine pregnancy care or planned treatment is not covered.
Personal Liability
Covered
Covers legal liability up to €1 million (plus any additional costs agreed in writing) for bodily injury to any person, loss of or damage to property not owned by the insured or a relative, and loss of or damage to journey accommodation not belonging to the insured or a relative. An excess of €75 applies. Excludes liability arising from motorised vehicles, aircraft, watercraft, deliberate acts, employment, firearms, or animals owned by the insured.
Legal Assistance
Excluded
No standalone legal assistance or legal expenses benefit is described in this policy. The personal liability section covers third-party legal liability costs but does not include a separate legal advice or legal expenses benefit for the insured. Allianz Assistance will take over and deal with claims in the insured’s name but does not provide a dedicated legal expenses cover.
24-Hour Emergency Medical Assistance
Covered
Allianz Assistance provides a 24-hour, 365-day emergency medical assistance service. Insured persons can call at any time (Phone: 00 353 1 619 3620, Email: medical@allianz-assistance.co.uk). Services include confirmation of payment to hospitals and doctors abroad, repatriation coordination, and assignment of experienced assistance co-ordinators. The insured must notify the service immediately upon serious illness, hospitalisation, or when early return or extended stay may be required.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured must contact the 24-hour emergency medical assistance service (00 353 1 619 3620) immediately upon serious illness or accident abroad requiring hospitalisation, or where early return or extended stay may be required. If the condition is life-, limb-, sight- or organ-threatening and the insured is unable to call, they must do so as soon as possible. Failure to obtain prior agreement for expenses may result in reduced or no reimbursement.
Unauthorized treatment
Any expenses incurred without prior agreement from Allianz Assistance are not covered under Section 10. The insurer will not accept liability for costs incurred for repatriation or treatment if the insured refuses to follow advice from the treating doctor and Allianz medical advisers. Extra transport and accommodation costs of a higher standard than those already used on the journey are excluded unless specifically agreed.
Purchase while abroad
The policy cannot be issued once the journey has started. Cover applies only for the whole journey and a policy will not be issued if the insured has already begun their journey. The Irish Life Health Travel Insurance policy is linked to and provided in conjunction with a valid Irish Life Health Insurance policy; it cannot be purchased independently while abroad.
Chronic conditions
Chronic or gradually worsening conditions are excluded unless shown on the policy schedule. The conditions and exclusions of the Irish Life Health Insurance policy apply equally to this travel policy. Any medical claim not covered by the Irish Life Health Insurance policy is also excluded under this policy. Pre-existing medical screening is not currently available.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy complications are not explicitly listed as a named covered event or exclusion. Cover would only apply if the complication constitutes a necessary and unforeseen medical emergency during the journey and is consistent with the conditions of the Irish Life Health Insurance policy. Routine pregnancy care, elective treatment, and travel for the purpose of receiving treatment abroad are excluded.
pre_existing_conditions
Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded. The health-related conditions and exclusions from the Irish Life Health Insurance policy are incorporated by reference into this travel policy. Pre-existing medical condition screening is not currently offered, so the policy cannot be extended to cover such conditions. Policyholders who find the cover does not meet their needs may cancel within the 14-day cooling-off period.
coverage_duration_limit
For this bundled policy, a trip booked to last longer than 31 days is not covered. Trips within the home country (Republic of Ireland) must be for at least 3 nights and have pre-booked transport or accommodation, or be more than 25 miles from home (unless involving a sea crossing). Winter sports cover applies for up to 31 days in total during the period of insurance when the additional premium has been paid.
