Covered
AIG Assistance Services (the Medical Emergency Assistance Company) provide a 24-hour emergency service, 365 days a year, reachable by phone and email for immediate help if you are ill, injured or die outside the Republic of Ireland.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
If admitted to hospital abroad as an inpatient for more than 24 hours, or if outpatient treatment is likely to cost more than €700, you or someone on your behalf must contact AIG Assistance Services immediately; failure to do so may result in no cover or a reduced payment.
Unauthorized treatment
If AIG Assistance Services are not contacted to authorise an early return to Ireland or an extension of medical treatment, AIG may provide no cover or may reduce the amount paid for medical expenses or return travel costs.
Purchase while abroad
This policy is only available to individuals ordinarily resident in the Republic of Ireland and is null and void for non-residents; cover cannot start after you have left the Republic of Ireland.
Chronic conditions
Claims relating to a medical condition, illness or death connected to a medical condition (including chronic conditions) that you, a travelling companion, relative or business associate knew about before buying the insurance are excluded unless a change in health is reported to AIG before travelling.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy-related costs are covered provided you are not more than 26 weeks pregnant at the start of or during the trip; becoming pregnant after buying the policy and being over 26 weeks pregnant during the trip, or being advised unfit to travel due to pregnancy complications, can trigger cancellation cover instead.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered if you do not hold private medical insurance, and conditions not covered by your private medical insurance are also excluded even if you hold such cover.
