Coverage limits
Own damage
Fully comprehensive Casco insurance covers all material damage to the insured vehicle, regardless of the cause of the accident and even if the policyholder is entirely at fault. This includes single-vehicle accidents (hitting a tree, wall, post, or veering off the road), collisions with identified or unidentified third parties, damage while parking, and damage caused by martens/stone martens. A key Luxembourg market feature: no standard excess applies by default — if the claim is covered, the insured is reimbursed in full, unless the policyholder has expressly requested an excess to reduce their premium.
Total loss
Total loss (perte totale) cover applies when the insured vehicle is declared economically beyond repair (economically irreparable) following a covered event. This may arise from an accident, theft, fire, glass damage, natural perils, or collision with an animal. An optional new-for-old value (valeur à neuf) guarantee can be added, allowing reimbursement at the original purchase price; this is particularly relevant for new or recent vehicles. Depending on the insurer, compensation may be at purchase value, expert-assessed market value, or with an uplift on replacement value.
Partial loss
Partial loss covers damage that is repairable, where the vehicle is not declared a total loss. Casco (comprehensive) policies cover all material damage to the vehicle body and accessories, including at-fault accidents, vandalism, marten damage, misfuelling, and tyre damage. Mini Casco (partial Casco) policies cover only external/uncontrollable risks: theft, fire, glass damage, natural events, and animal collisions — but not at-fault accident damage.
Theft & robbery
Theft and robbery (vol, carjacking, home-jacking) are covered under both Mini Casco and full Casco policies in Luxembourg. Coverage typically includes theft by break-in, electronic key hacking, carjacking, and home-jacking. Replacement of wheels, tyres, hub caps, keys, and locks, as well as repair of anti-theft systems, is generally included. A replacement vehicle is usually provided for up to 60 days in the event of theft.
Glass damage
Glass damage (bris de glaces) is a standard guarantee included from the Mini Casco level upwards. In Luxembourg, the scope of glass cover is broader than in neighbouring countries: rear-view mirrors and rear lights are typically treated as glass breakage, in addition to the windscreen, side windows, rear screen, and sunroof. Some insurers (e.g. LALUX) also include headlights (including xenon) and sun visors. Glass damage cover is required for the animal collision and natural perils guarantees to be triggered under Mini Casco policies.
Natural perils
Natural perils (forces de la nature) are covered from the Mini Casco level onwards. Covered events include: falling rocks, storms, hail, and similar weather events. Flooding and other climate events such as hailstorms are also covered. This guarantee is contingent on the glass damage cover being subscribed at Mini Casco level.
Vandalism
Vandalism coverage is included in full Casco (comprehensive) policies but is not covered under Mini Casco. Vandalism cover protects against wilful malicious acts causing damage to the vehicle, including tyre damage caused by vandalism.
Roadside assistance
Roadside assistance (assistance panne/dépannage) includes 24/7 breakdown and towing service following a breakdown or accident immobilising the vehicle, applicable in Luxembourg, at the insured’s home address, and abroad. This includes vehicle and occupant assistance and repatriation. Assistance cover is not always included by default and may need to be specifically requested or is included as a package. Note: At AXA Luxembourg, breakdown assistance is not included unless specifically requested.
Replacement vehicle
A replacement vehicle (véhicule de remplacement/courtoisie) is typically provided under comprehensive Casco policies. Standard provision is a category B vehicle (or equivalent per professional rental classification), rented from an insurer-approved rental company within the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Duration: up to 5 days for a breakdown, up to 15 days for a covered accident, and up to 60 days in the event of theft. Reimbursement is typically capped at EUR 30 per day for up to 10 days if the insured rents from a non-approved company. Fuel, tolls, and supplementary insurance costs are excluded.
Driver accident
Driver accident protection (garantie conducteur protégé / garantie conducteur) is a supplementary guarantee and is not included by default in standard Luxembourg car insurance contracts. It covers the driver of the insured vehicle against bodily injury (death, disability, medical costs) in the event of an accident, including when the driver is at fault. This is considered essential since the driver is the only person not covered by standard third-party liability insurance. Baloise is noted as systematically including this guarantee in all its plans without extra option.
