Elmo Insurance
Elmo Insurance is a motor casco insurance for the MT market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Claims must be reported to Elmo Insurance in writing as soon as possible after any occurrence. Elmo deals directly with approved repairers and orders parts on behalf of the policyholder; for comprehensive cover Elmo organises the survey and directs repairs to an approved repairer. VAT-registered commercial vehicle owners must purchase parts themselves and claim settlement net of VAT.

Accidental Damage to Your Motor Vehicle
Covered
If the motor vehicle is lost, stolen or damaged, Elmo will at its option pay for the motor vehicle to be repaired at a Suitable Repairer, replace the motor vehicle if it is lost, stolen or damaged beyond economical repair, or pay an amount in cash equivalent to the value of any loss or damage. The maximum amount payable is either the Market Value of the motor vehicle at the time of loss or the policyholder's estimate of its value as shown on the Policy Schedule, whichever is the lesser amount. For vehicles five years old or more from the date of manufacture, Alternative Parts may be used. A New Motor Vehicle Concession applies within one year of registration if the vehicle is a private car and repairs would cost more than 60% of the catalogue price.
SourceTotal Loss Settlement (including New Vehicle Concession)
Covered
If the motor vehicle is damaged beyond economical repair or stolen and not recovered, Elmo will replace the motor vehicle or pay cash equivalent to the Market Value or the policyholder's scheduled estimate, whichever is lesser. Under the New Motor Vehicle Concession, if a private car is within one year of first registration and repair costs exceed 60% of the manufacturer's catalogue price, Elmo will replace the vehicle or pay the equivalent cost of a new vehicle of the same make and model (or the scheduled estimate if lower). The lost or damaged vehicle then belongs to Elmo.
SourcePartial Loss - Accidental Damage Repair
Covered
Where the motor vehicle sustains accidental damage that does not constitute a total loss, Elmo will pay for the motor vehicle to be repaired at a Suitable Repairer up to the Market Value or the policyholder's scheduled estimate, whichever is lesser. The policyholder may authorise minor repairs up to €150 without prior written consent provided cost estimates are forwarded promptly. Removal and protection costs up to €300 are also covered. Within Designated States, removal and protection costs up to €500 apply.
SourceDamage by Fire and Theft
Covered
If the motor vehicle is stolen or damaged as a direct result of Fire (fire, lightning or explosion) or Theft (theft or attempted theft), Elmo will pay for repair at a Suitable Repairer, replace the vehicle if lost or damaged beyond economical repair, or pay cash equivalent to the Market Value or scheduled estimate whichever is lesser. Spare parts and accessories kept in the vehicle or private garage are also insured. Theft is not covered if the car keys were left inside or on the motor vehicle. Loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft where the vehicle was not properly locked, or any window, roof opening, removable roof panel or hood was left open or unlocked, is excluded.
SourceWindscreen and Glass Cover
Covered
Covers repair and/or replacement of the private car's windscreen or windows if broken or damaged, and scratching of the bodywork arising solely from the broken glass, provided there has been no other loss or damage. Applies only to private cars with comprehensive cover. A glass-only claim does not affect the No Claims Discount provided the amount claimed does not exceed €500. A €50 excess applies to windscreen and glass claims. Alternative Parts may be used if the vehicle is five years old or more.
SourceFlood, Storm and Tempest Damage
Conditional
Damage arising from flood, storm and tempest is included for comprehensive private car cover (excluding motorcycles and vehicles for hire and reward) under Endorsement No. 7.10 which deletes the standard exclusion. Damage arising from flood, typhoon, hurricane, cyclone, tornado, volcanic eruption, earthquake or other convulsion of nature remains excluded for motorcycles. For commercial vehicles, storm, tempest and flood cover requires a specific endorsement. Riot and strike cover for commercial vehicles is also available by endorsement (No. 7.5).
SourceAccidental Damage (including Vandalism)
Covered
Section 3 (Accidental Damage) covers any accidental loss or damage to the motor vehicle including damage caused by third parties (vandalism), subject to the general policy exceptions. Riot and civil commotion damage to private cars is implicitly covered under Section 3 accidental damage; for commercial vehicles, riot and strike cover requires Endorsement No. 7.5. Deliberate or intentional loss or damage caused by anyone insured under the policy is explicitly excluded.
SourceRoadside Assistance
Conditional
Roadside assistance is included free of charge (up to 3 calls per policy period) for all private cars with comprehensive cover, covering Malta, Gozo and Europe. For private cars with Third Party Fire & Theft or Third Party Only cover, and for commercial vehicles and motorcycles, roadside assistance is available at subsidised rates as an optional benefit. For commercial vehicles, roadside assistance covers Malta and Gozo only; European coverage is not available for commercial vehicles. The service operates on a 24-hour, 7-days-a-week basis.
SourceHiring of Alternative Vehicle
Covered
Under Endorsement No. 7.3, if the motor vehicle cannot be used as a result of damage, Fire or Theft covered under the policy, Elmo will contribute towards the cost of hiring an alternative vehicle of a similar type. The maximum amount payable in any one Period of Insurance is €250 in total, for the period during which the motor vehicle is under repair as agreed by the motor surveyor. Prior written approval from Elmo must be obtained before hiring the vehicle, and a receipt and copy of the hire agreement from a licensed vehicle rental firm must be presented. For each claim under Section 3, the excess is reduced by €50. Applies only to private cars with comprehensive cover.
SourcePersonal Accident Cover
Covered
If the policyholder and/or their Partner are accidentally injured and within three months of the accident the bodily injury is the sole cause of death, loss of limb, or irrecoverable loss of all sight in one or both eyes, Elmo will pay a maximum of €5,000 to any one person following any one accident during the Policy Period, irrespective of the number of motor policies issued. If more than one person is injured, the maximum payable for any one accident is €10,000 during the Policy Period. Applies only to private cars with comprehensive cover. Excludes anyone aged 71 or over, anyone under 18, anyone found positive to any drug test, anyone driving over the prescribed alcohol limit, suicide attempts, and deliberate attempts to put lives in danger.

repair_network_requirements
Damaged vehicles must be repaired at a Suitable Repairer, defined as a locally approved repairer by the competent authority. Elmo's cost control team contacts suppliers and orders parts, which are delivered directly to the approved repairer chosen by the policyholder. For vehicles five years old or more from the date of manufacture, Alternative Parts (recycled, non-original, or pattern parts) may be used. Standard accessories not available locally may be paid in cash at the latest manufacturer's catalogue price plus reasonable transport costs. Minor repairs up to €150 may be authorised by the policyholder without prior written consent, provided estimates are forwarded to Elmo without delay.
territorial_scope
Base cover applies in Malta (including the Republic of Malta and any recognised sea passage within the Republic). Third-party liability under Section 1 automatically extends to all Designated States (EU/EEA member states plus Andorra, San Marino, Vatican City and Switzerland) and to Third Countries during a direct journey between Malta and a Designated State where there is no foreign bureau. For private cars, own damage cover (Sections 2 and 3) may be extended to Designated States free of charge for up to 30 days aggregate per policy period, subject to prior notification and endorsement. Commercial vehicles and motorcycles require an additional premium and endorsement for overseas own-damage cover. Travel to non-Designated States requires a Green Card and additional premium. A Green Card is not required for travel within Designated States as the Certificate of Motor Insurance is sufficient.
anti_theft_requirements
Theft of the motor vehicle is not covered if the car Keys (physical key, fob or any manufacturer-made device) were left inside or on the motor vehicle. Loss or damage caused by theft or attempted theft is also excluded if the motor vehicle was not properly locked, or if any window, roof opening, removable roof panel or hood was left open or unlocked. Any modifications to the vehicle that affect performance must be disclosed and approved by Elmo; cover will not be provided if the vehicle has been modified to increase top speed or acceleration without Elmo's approval.
claim_notification_deadline
The policyholder must notify Elmo in writing as soon as possible after any occurrence which may result in a claim. Per the FAQs, the accident must be reported within 24 hours to provide full details. The policyholder must not admit liability for any claim or accident unless Elmo asks them to, and must not authorise any repairs without Elmo's written consent (except minor repairs up to €150). In the event of theft or other criminal act, the police authorities must be advised immediately. Theft claims will not be settled prior to three months from the date of loss. If a claim is subject to a magisterial enquiry, no settlement will be made until the enquiry is concluded.
deductible_rules
A compulsory excess applies to all claims. For private cars on comprehensive cover, the standard accidental own damage excess is: NIL for drivers aged 25 and over; €200 for drivers aged 21–24; €500 for drivers under 21; €125 for drivers over 25 with less than 2 years driving experience. For fire and theft claims, the standard excess is €250 for all ages. Endorsement No. 7.8 (Reduction of Excess) reduces the compulsory excess by €50 for each and every claim under Sections 1, 2 and 3. Endorsement No. 7.1 increases the voluntary excess by €125; Endorsement No. 7.2 increases it by €250 (each attracting a premium reduction). Endorsement No. 7.9 deletes the fire and theft excess entirely. A €50 excess applies to windscreen and glass claims (Section 4). A €75 excess applies to loss of keys claims (Section 5). Voluntary excess increase is optional for private cars and commercial vehicles on comprehensive cover.
