Coverage limits
Liability limit (covers injury + property damage)
One combined sum for both bodily injury and property damage, not two separate limits.
€6.5M
Motor legal expenses
€250
The full Motor Legal Expenses section (up to €1,000 per incident/period to pursue a claim against a responsible third party) is only operative on Third Party Fire & Theft and Comprehensive policies, per the Policy Cover Index — it is NOT operative on Third Party Only. Third Party Only policyholders instead receive: (a) discretionary, uncapped legal defence/inquest representation costs under Section 2 'Your liability to others' if criminal proceedings arise from a covered accident, and (b) up to €250 of assistance/arbitration costs for recovering uninsured losses, available only as an optional additional cover (Section 12E) at extra premium.
Section: Section 12 > E - Assistance and advice in the recovery of uninsured losses
we will, at our option, pay for the costs involved in a voluntary arbitration procedure which does not involve assistance from a legal practitioner. All other legal expenses are not covered by this section. The maximum amount payable by us under this section is €250.
Green Card / proof of cover abroad
Covered
All designated states (EU members, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, UK, Switzerland, Andorra, San Marino, Vatican City, Monaco, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro) have agreed a Green Card is not necessary for cross-border travel; the certificate of motor insurance is sufficient proof of the compulsory cover. For travel to non-designated ('third') countries, GasanMamo can extend cover and issue a Green Card at an additional premium if contacted at least two weeks in advance.
Section: Section 7 > A - Minimum cover for use abroad
All designated states have agreed that a Green Card is not necessary for cross border travel.
Roadside assistance
€1K
On Third Party Only, roadside assistance (24-hour breakdown and towing across Malta and Gozo, free towing to a destination of choice) is an optional additional cover (Section 12A) available for an extra premium of around €16.00, and also includes a €50 reduction in the Section 2 excess. It is included automatically and free of charge only on Comprehensive policies. While the car is abroad in a designated state, roadside assistance costs (if purchased) are covered up to €1,000 per period of insurance (Section 7C); for Third Party Only this overseas benefit is only operative if the additional premium has been paid.
Section: Section 12 > A - Roadside assistance cover
You will be provided with roadside assistance should your car suffer a mechanical or electrical breakdown.
Personal accident benefit (policyholder/spouse)
€8K
On Third Party Only, personal accident cover is an optional additional cover (Section 12C) at extra premium: €8,000 is payable if accidental bodily injury connected with the car causes death, loss of a limb, or permanent loss of sight within 3 months, with a €16,000 aggregate cap per period of insurance. Excludes corporate bodies, suicide, injury while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and anyone aged 70 or over at the time of the accident. Included automatically (not optional) on Comprehensive policies.
Section: Section 12 > C - Personal accident
we will pay to the injured person €8,000 if, within three months of the accident, the injury is the sole cause of: death; or loss of any limb; or permanent loss of all sight in one or both eyes
Medical expenses for occupants
€500
This is a medical-expenses benefit, not a death/disability benefit: if the policyholder or any other occupant of the car is injured as a direct result of an accident involving the car, GasanMamo pays medical expenses up to €500 per injured person, with no excess. On Third Party Only this is only available as an optional additional cover (Section 12D) at extra premium; it is included automatically on Comprehensive policies. There is no separate lump-sum personal-accident benefit for ordinary passengers (as opposed to the policyholder/spouse) under Third Party Only.
Section: Section 12 > D - Medical expenses
If you, or any other occupant of your car is injured as a direct result of your car being involved in an accident, we will pay for the medical expenses in connection with such injury up to the sum of €500 in respect of each person injured. No excess applies under this section.
Key conditions
Driver restrictions
Only persons meeting the 'Authorised/Permitted Drivers' definition shown on the policy schedule may drive the car (ranging from the policyholder only up to any person driving with permission). Cover is excluded if the driver does not hold a valid licence for the vehicle category in the country of the accident, if the licence expired more than 60 days before the accident, is suspended, withdrawn, or the driver is disqualified, or if the driver is over the legal alcohol limit, unfit through drink or drugs, or refuses a breath/blood/urine sample without lawful reason.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder or legal representative must notify GasanMamo as soon as reasonably possible after any accident, injury, loss or damage, giving full details of the incident; failure to provide requested information or instructions may result in the claim being delayed or suspended.
Bonus-malus rules
For Third Party Only policies, the No Claim Discount rises with claim-free years: 20% (1 year), 35% (2 years), 50% (3 years), 65% (4+ years). After 1 claim it falls to 0% (1-2 years), 20% (3 years) or 35% (4+ years); after 2 claims it falls to 0% regardless of claim-free years. The free or purchasable 'Protected No Claim Discount' benefit is only available on Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft policies, not on Third Party Only.
Territorial scope
Malta or another country as defined in the policy's territorial cover section, or as may be extended by endorsement; minimum liability cover automatically extends to all EU member states and other designated states.
Exclusions
No Accidental Damage Cover
Third Party Only and Third Party Fire & Theft policies do not cover accidental damage to the insured vehicle. Policyholder is responsible for costs unless not at fault in accident.
SourceSection: How Does Motor Insurance Work in Malta? > What is the Claim Process? > 3. Get Your Vehicle Fixed
If you have a third-party cover or third-party, fire and theft, your policy will not cover any accidental damage to your vehicle, meaning you will be responsible for the costs unless you were not to blame for the accident.
