Nationale-Nederlanden
Nationale-Nederlanden is a travel insurance for the NL market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The Alarmcentrale can provide a guarantee to a medical institution that medical costs will be paid by this insurance, subject to prior approval. Medical costs must first be claimed from the Dutch health insurer; unreimbursed costs are then covered by NN. The policyholder must always contact the Alarmcentrale before incurring extra costs; unauthorised treatment may not be reimbursed.
Geographic scope
NL
Module Pechhulp)
Unique selling points
- The base product includes 24/7 emergency assistance via the NN Alarmcentrale, covering medical evacuation and repatriation with no fixed monetary cap, making it meaningfully more comprehensive than insurers that cap evacuation costs.
- Modular product design allows policyholders to pay only for the coverages they need, with optional add-ons for medical expenses, accidents, winter sports, roadside assistance, and cancellation.
- Coverage is available for trips of up to 180 consecutive days – a maximum duration selectable at purchase that is well above the typical market standard of 90 days.
- The medical expenses module covers actual treatment costs abroad on a cost-price basis (not capped at Dutch tariffs), ensuring coverage even in countries where healthcare is significantly more expensive than in the Netherlands.
- Online purchase and management are available directly via nn.nl without requiring an intermediary, with a 14-day cooling-off period and daily cancellation from the end of the first contract year.
Coverage limits
Medical expenses (Module Medische kosten)
Optional
Covers medically necessary treatment costs abroad not reimbursed by the insured's Dutch basic or supplementary health insurance (zorgverzekering), including costs that fall below the deductible or exceed the maximum reimbursement of the Dutch health insurer. Covers: doctors, hospitalisation, surgery, prescribed treatments/medications/dressings, first prostheses/orthoses/crutches due to accident, and transport to/from the treatment location. Post-trip costs in the Netherlands due to an accident or illness during the trip are covered up to €1,250 and up to one year after the event. No overall monetary cap stated in policy; reimbursement is on actual-cost basis.
Emergency medical treatment
Optional
Emergency medical treatment abroad is covered under the Module Medische kosten as part of medically necessary treatments. Costs must be medically necessary, prescribed by a doctor, consistent with treatments customary among doctors working in the Netherlands, fall under regular medicine (alternative medicine is excluded), and not unnecessarily expensive. The Alarmcentrale must pre-authorise costs where possible.
Hospitalisation and surgery
Optional
Hospitalisation and surgery abroad are explicitly listed as covered costs under Module Medische kosten (section 5.6, item 2). The insured must be admitted in the lowest class or the class covered by their Dutch basic health insurance. Coverage continues if the insured must remain in a foreign hospital beyond the trip duration. Post-trip hospitalisation costs in the Netherlands are covered up to €1,250 and up to one year after the illness/accident date.
Outpatient treatment (doctors, examinations, medicines)
Optional
Outpatient costs covered under Module Medische kosten: doctors, prescribed treatments, examinations, dressings, and physician-prescribed medications. Treatment must be standard medical practice in the Netherlands and not be postponable until after the return to the Netherlands.
Emergency dental treatment due to accident
Optional
Dental treatment required as a result of an accident during the trip is covered up to €500 per insured person under Module Medische kosten. The treatment must take place within one year of the accident. Covers: dental treatment by (dental) practitioners, X-rays, prescribed medications, repair of dentures/prosthetic teeth, and transport to/from the treatment location (both abroad and in the Netherlands).
Medical transport (Module Hulpverlening)
Covered
The Module Hulpverlening (included in the base product together with Module Bagage) covers necessary extra transport costs for the affected insured and a companion when the insured falls ill or has an accident during the trip, including ambulance (air) transport when medically necessary. The Alarmcentrale's medical advisor determines medical necessity based on Dutch standards. Transport costs are reimbursed at €0.24/km for car, lowest class for public transport/plane, and up to €100/day for a replacement vehicle. The module also covers transport to/from the treatment location under Module Medische kosten (section 5.6, item 5).
Medical evacuation (Module Hulpverlening)
Covered
Covered under Module Hulpverlening (base product): necessary extra transport costs including ambulance (air) transport when medically necessary. The Alarmcentrale determines which assistance is provided and which costs are reimbursed; pre-authorisation is mandatory. The Alarmcentrale's medical team can provide binding advice on what assistance is necessary.
Repatriation of remains (Module Hulpverlening)
Covered
Covered under Module Hulpverlening (base product) if the insured dies abroad: necessary transport costs to bring the deceased to the Netherlands and the costs of the coffin required for transport; or alternatively costs of local burial/cremation up to the equivalent cost of repatriation to the Netherlands. The Alarmcentrale determines the amount. Also covers travel and accommodation costs for two close family members or housemates to attend the local funeral or cremation.
Search and rescue (Module Hulpverlening)
Covered
Covered under Module Hulpverlening (base product): necessary search, rescue, and recovery operations carried out by or on behalf of competent government authorities when the insured goes missing or has an accident. Coverage applies only if the action has a reasonable chance of success and there is a reasonable chance the insured is still alive.
COVID-19 treatment
Conditional
COVID-19 is not explicitly mentioned in the policy terms. Treatment for COVID-19 abroad may be covered under Module Medische kosten as a medically necessary illness requiring treatment during the trip, provided it was not foreseeable before departure and was not a pre-existing condition. Standard exclusions apply (e.g., treatment foreseeable before the trip, pre-existing conditions with predictable complaints).
Pre-existing conditions
Excluded
Medical costs are not covered if: (1) it was already established at the start of the insurance or the trip that treatment would be needed during the trip; (2) the insured was already ill or had a condition before the trip that caused foreseeable complaints during the trip. Under Module Hulpverlening, coverage is also excluded for events related to an illness, condition or abnormality for which the insured was already being treated abroad before the trip, or for which the insured wishes to be treated abroad.
Winter sports cover (Module Wintersport)
Optional
Module Wintersport is an optional add-on. Without it, damage occurring during winter sports activities is excluded. With it, Module Hulpverlening and all other subscribed modules also cover damage caused during a winter sports holiday. Covered winter sports: alpine skiing, ski-bobbing, touring skiing, mono-skiing, snowboarding, swingbo, telemarking, surf-skiing, glacier skiing – all only within marked pistes. Covers refund of pre-paid ski passes, ski lessons, and equipment rental for unused days due to illness, accident, or death. Special (risky) and dangerous sports are never covered.
Adventure and dangerous sports
Excluded
Special (risky) sports and dangerous sports are explicitly excluded under general exclusions (section 6.1, items 9 and 10). Special sports include: water sports (rafting, canyoning, kitesurfing), air sports (parachuting, parasailing, hang-gliding, ultralight flying, bungee jumping), off-piste skiing (even guided) and similar. Dangerous sports include: mountain sports (abseiling, mountaineering except marked beginner trails), combat sports, motorised sports, speed competitions, horse racing, ice sailing, and sport as a (side) profession. All forms of (semi-)professional sport are also excluded.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Medical costs related to an existing pregnancy are generally not covered. However, costs resulting from complications of an existing pregnancy ARE covered, provided: (1) the complications were not foreseeable, and (2) it was not possible to postpone the treatment until after return to the Netherlands. Routine pregnancy-related treatment and treatment foreseeable before departure are excluded. Under the cancellation module, a doctor's advice against travel for medical reasons related to pregnancy, or unforeseen medical complications of the pregnancy, are insured cancellation events.
Accommodation liability (Aansprakelijkheid verblijf – Module Bagage)
Covered
Covered under Module Bagage (base product): liability for damage to rented accommodation or its inventory, up to the insured amount per insured per event as stated on the policy schedule. The insured must be liable for the damage, must have done everything to limit it, and must be able to show repair invoices. Damage to the common areas of the accommodation is not covered. Note: the policy refers to 'the insured amount' on the policy schedule; the IPID (verzekeringskaart) states a maximum of €1,250 per event. This is accommodation liability only – not general third-party personal liability.
Legal assistance
Not offered
Legal assistance / rechtsbijstand is not a covered module in the Doorlopende Reisverzekering UNDR-02. The policy modules are: Hulpverlening, Bagage en Aansprakelijkheid verblijf, Medische kosten, Ongevallen, Wintersport, Pechhulp, Annulering, and Zelf samengestelde reis. No legal assistance module is listed.
24/7 Emergency assistance (NN Alarmcentrale)
Covered
24/7 emergency assistance is a core feature of the Doorlopende Reisverzekering, available via the NN Alarmcentrale at +31 26 400 2390. The Alarmcentrale provides emergency help in case of illness, accident or death during a trip abroad, coordinates medical assistance, determines what assistance is provided and which costs are reimbursed, and can provide binding medical advice. Available both within Europe and worldwide depending on the chosen coverage area.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
In urgent situations, the insured must contact the Alarmcentrale (+31 26 400 2390) as soon as possible. Extra costs (e.g., medical visits, hospitalisation) must always be pre-authorised by the Alarmcentrale. Failure to comply may result in the Alarmcentrale refusing to provide (further) assistance or reimbursement of costs.
Unauthorized treatment
Medical costs incurred without prior authorisation from the Alarmcentrale may not be reimbursed. The Alarmcentrale determines which assistance is provided and which costs are covered. Self-arranged assistance without Alarmcentrale approval is not permitted.
Purchase while abroad
The Doorlopende Reisverzekering is an annual policy and cannot be taken out while already abroad. It must be concluded in the Netherlands before departure. The Module Annulering must be taken out either at the time of booking or within 14 days of booking to cover that trip.
Chronic conditions
Chronic diseases are not explicitly mentioned, but the general exclusion for pre-existing conditions applies: medical costs are not covered if the insured was already ill or had a condition before the trip that caused foreseeable complaints during the trip. Treatment for conditions for which the insured was already being treated abroad before the trip is also excluded under Module Hulpverlening.
Pregnancy
Regular pregnancy-related medical treatment is excluded. Unforeseen complications of an existing pregnancy are covered under Module Medische kosten, provided they were not foreseeable and treatment could not be postponed until after return to the Netherlands. A doctor's advice not to travel due to pregnancy-related medical reasons is a valid cancellation event under Module Annulering.
pre_existing_conditions
Medical costs are excluded if: (1) it was already known at the start of the insurance or the trip that treatment would be needed during the trip; (2) the insured was already ill or had a condition before the trip that caused foreseeable complaints during the trip; (3) the insured travelled with the (partial) aim of receiving (para)medical treatment; or (4) the treatment could be postponed until after return to the Netherlands. Under Module Hulpverlening, assistance is also excluded for events related to a condition for which the insured was already receiving treatment abroad or intends to receive treatment abroad.
coverage_duration_limit
The maximum insured trip duration is stated on the policy schedule; the insured can choose between 90 or 180 consecutive days per trip. If a trip unexpectedly lasts longer than the maximum duration due to circumstances outside the insured's control, coverage continues for the duration of such circumstances. The annual policy itself renews each year; within the policy year, multiple separate trips can be covered as long as each trip does not exceed the chosen maximum consecutive duration.
