Direct payment

Medical assistance is organised and paid directly by the Alarm Centre (Centrum Alarmowe) on behalf of ERGO Hestia. The insurer selects the hospital, arranges transport and settles costs directly with the facility. If the Alarm Centre could not organise the service for reasons beyond its control, ERGO Hestia reimburses documented costs incurred by the insured within applicable limits.

Geographic scope

Worldwide excluding USA, Canada, China and Japan

Coverage applies outside Poland and outside the insured's country of residence. Countries subject to Polish MFA travel warnings are excluded. Terrorism coverage applies for up to 7 days after an event, limited to 50% of the insured sum.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must notify ERGO Hestia of the event immediately after it occurs or after learning of it. Before incurring medical costs exceeding PLN 2,000 (gross), the insured must inform ERGO Hestia. The Alarm Centre must be contacted to organise assistance services; if services are arranged without the Alarm Centre's involvement (except where impossible), reimbursement may be limited.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured refuses medically-approved transport back to Poland or the country of residence despite approval by the Alarm Centre and the treating physician, ERGO Hestia reimburses only the costs of services and benefits incurred up to that point. Failure to follow the treating physician's or Alarm Centre's recommendations is an exclusion ground.

Purchase while abroad

The policy must be concluded before departure. Coverage cannot start on the same day as policy conclusion — the earliest coverage start date is the next calendar day after the policy is purchased. The contract cannot be concluded with the intent to cover an already-started trip.

Chronic conditions

Chronic diseases (defined as conditions treated on a continuous or periodic basis within 12 months before policy conclusion) are excluded by default. Exception: KL&A covers events arising from listed diagnosed conditions (allergy, bronchial asthma, all types of diabetes, depression, discopathy, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, hypertension, obesity) if the insured was under medical supervision and followed the treating physician's recommendations. Full chronic disease cover requires optional premium extension.

Pregnancy

Childbirth and pregnancy-related costs are excluded unless birth occurs before the 32nd week of pregnancy. Termination of pregnancy is excluded unless performed to save the life or health of the insured person and permitted by the law of the country where the procedure is performed.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Coverage is not available if, on medical grounds established by a doctor before departure, there were contraindications to travelling abroad, or if it was necessary to undergo surgery or hospital treatment before the trip and the insured was informed of this by a doctor. Coverage is also excluded if the purpose of the trip was treatment or continuation of treatment begun before departure.

Coverage duration limit

The policy is concluded for a period of up to 12 months or a shorter period. Cover automatically extends by 48 hours (without additional premium) if the insured's return to Poland or country of residence is delayed due to: breakdown or accident of means of transport; cancellation or delay of public transport due to bad weather; or a random event. Terrorism cover is limited to 7 days from the date of the terrorist act.
