Assistance call deadline

In case of hospitalization or medical emergency abroad, Chubb Assistance must be contacted immediately; for all other claims, the insurer must be notified as soon as reasonably possible and within 30 days of becoming aware of anything likely to result in a claim.

Unauthorized treatment

If Chubb Assistance is not contacted before incurring hospitalization/emergency treatment expenses, the insurer may, to the extent legally permitted, reduce the benefit payable on the claim.

Purchase while abroad

The policy cannot be purchased while abroad: all insured persons must be permanent residents of Portugal and physically located in Portugal at the date the policy is bought.

Chronic conditions

Chronic conditions are treated as pre-existing medical conditions and are excluded if they had been diagnosed, treated, or required hospital/outpatient care before the trip was booked or the policy period began.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy-related emergencies diagnosed by an obstetrician are covered, but travel between weeks 24-28 requires written medical confirmation of fitness to travel dated no more than 5 days before departure; complications known before the trip started are excluded.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Any pre-existing illness or medical condition diagnosed, treated, or requiring hospital/outpatient care before the trip was booked (or the start of the policy period, if later) is excluded from all sections of the policy.

Coverage duration limit

Cover ends when the insured returns home at the end of the policy period; it is automatically and freely extended up to 14 days if public transport is delayed/cancelled by strikes, adverse weather or mechanical failure, or up to 30 days if the insured cannot return due to injury, illness or quarantine.
