Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)
Covered
The RCA policy issued by Hellas Direct serves as the Green Card (Carte Verde) and is valid in Romania and all EEA member states, as well as in states located between two EU member states with no national motor bureau. Accidents outside Romania must be reported to greencard@hellasdirect.ro.
Roadside Assistance
Optional
Roadside assistance is available as a separate product at an additional cost and is not included in the base RCA policy. It includes towing, breakdown assistance and accident support, coordinated via the NextIns platform. A bundled version with roadside assistance in Romania, Bulgaria and Greece is also offered via the FlexiPay Revolut product.
Driver Accident Coverage
Excluded
RCA covers only damages caused to third parties; the at-fault driver's own injuries or damages are not covered under this policy. A separate personal accident policy would be required.
Passenger Accident Coverage
Conditional
Passengers of the at-fault vehicle who are injured in an accident may be compensated as third parties under the RCA policy, provided they are not the policyholder or a person excluded under law. Coverage is conditional on the passengers being considered third-party claimants under Romanian law.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
The RCA policy (Green Card) is valid in Romania and all EEA member states, as well as in states located between two EU member states where no national motor bureau exists. Accidents outside Romania must be reported to greencard@hellasdirect.ro. Compensation limits for accidents abroad are set by local legislation.
Green card rules
The RCA policy doubles as the Green Card (Carte Verde) and is valid across EEA member states and Green Card member countries. For claims arising from accidents outside Romania, the insured must report to greencard@hellasdirect.ro and cooperate with the relevant national motor bureau.
Driver restrictions
Coverage may be void for accidents caused by a driver without a valid driving licence, or a driver under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances. Policies for high-risk drivers (BAAR) follow specific ASF guidelines effective from 10 February 2023 and exclude optional clauses such as direct settlement.
Claim notification deadline
Events must be reported to Hellas Direct promptly. The insured must notify the insurer within 5 business days of becoming aware of the loss. For total loss, notification must occur within 24 hours of the event. The insurer must notify the injured party within 5 working days of opening the claim file and must issue a final response within 30 days of receiving complete documentation.
Bonus-malus rules
The Bonus-Malus class is automatically retrieved from the national AIDA database (formerly CEDAM) at policy issuance and is portable between insurers. A claim-free history reduces premiums; each at-fault accident results in a two-class downgrade. Premiums are set according to ASF guidelines, factoring in vehicle age, specifications, contract duration, and Bonus-Malus adjustments.
