UNIQA Asigurari S.A.
UNIQA
UNIQA is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Romania market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Compensation is paid directly to the injured third party by UNIQA, with written notification to the insured. If the insured has already compensated the injured party and can prove it, payment is made to the insured. For RCA claims, repairs may be carried out at any authorised auto repair facility chosen freely by the injured party.
Geographic scope
Romania
Valid on Romanian territory, EU member states, EEA territories, and territories directly connecting two EU member states where no National Bureau exists. Green Card validates on territories whose symbols are not crossed out on the policy form.
Unique selling points
- Bodily injury liability limit of 6,070,000 EUR per accident — among the highest statutory limits in the EU — protecting against the most severe multi-victim accident scenarios.
- Injured third parties benefit from free choice of any authorised repair workshop, with no insurer-imposed network restrictions.
- RCA policy simultaneously serves as the Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate), valid across EU, EEA, and connected non-EU territories without additional documentation.
- Flexible policy durations from 1 to 12 months with instalment payment options, including enforceable title status for unpaid instalments protecting the insurer's receivables.
- Claims compensation paid directly to the injured third party within 30 calendar days of the last required document, with damages assessed by the insurer's own experts at no extra cost to the claimant.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury and death liability
Covered
Covers bodily injuries or death of third parties, including non-pecuniary (moral) prejudice, produced in one and the same accident regardless of the number of injured persons. Maximum limit is 6,070,000 EUR (equivalent in RON at BNR exchange rate on the date of accident).
Property damage liability
Covered
Covers material damages to third-party vehicles and property produced in one and the same accident, regardless of the number of injured persons. Maximum limit is 1,220,000 EUR (equivalent in RON at BNR exchange rate on the date of accident). Also covers costs for restoring the damaged vehicle to pre-accident condition, losses due to lack of use of the damaged vehicle, court costs of the injured party, and transportation costs of the damaged third-party vehicle where it cannot move under its own power.
Legal defence / court costs
Covered
Court costs incurred by the injured third party are covered within the RCA indemnity limits, as explicitly stated in the IPID. The insurer covers costs of experts engaged by the insurer. Separate legal defence costs for the insured policyholder are not stated as a distinct sublimit.
Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)
Covered
The RCA policy serves as the Green Card and validates on the territory of Romania, EU member states, EEA territories, and territories directly connecting two EU member states where no National Bureau exists. Validity is confirmed by country symbols not crossed out on the policy form.
Roadside assistance
Excluded
Roadside assistance is not referenced as an included coverage in the UNIQA RCA IPID or the General Conditions for RCA. Transportation of the damaged third-party vehicle is covered within the property damage indemnity, but proactive roadside assistance for the policyholder is not included in the mandatory RCA product.
Driver accident coverage
Excluded
The UNIQA RCA IPID explicitly excludes damages to property belonging to the at-fault driver of the insured vehicle and those resulting from bodily injury or death of the at-fault driver. Driver accident protection is not part of mandatory RCA coverage.
Passenger accident (as injured third parties)
Covered
Passengers injured in an accident caused by the insured vehicle are covered as third-party injured persons under the RCA bodily injury and property damage limits. They are not excluded from coverage and can claim compensation for bodily injury, death, and material damage up to the statutory limits. Separate per-passenger sublimits are not stated; the per-accident aggregate limit applies.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
The RCA insurance is valid on Romanian territory, EU member states, EEA territories, and territories directly connecting two EU member states where no National Bureau exists. The Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate) confirms validity in signatory countries whose symbols are not crossed out on the policy form. Coverage is subject to Romanian law.
Green card rules
The RCA policy itself serves as the Green Card (Carte Verde / International Insurance Certificate). Validity extends to EU/EEA countries and directly connecting territories without a National Bureau. Countries are indicated by symbols on the policy; symbols not crossed out confirm coverage. The insured must present the Green Card when traveling abroad.
Driver restrictions
No specific driver age or licence restrictions are stated in the UNIQA RCA IPID or General Conditions beyond the statutory requirements. The at-fault driver cannot claim for their own injuries or property damage under the RCA policy. Coverage applies to any authorised driver of the insured vehicle.
Claim notification deadline
The insured must notify UNIQA in writing as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours from the moment they knew or should have known about the insured event. For civil liability claims, notification can also be made via the UNIQA website (uniqa.ro/daune) or by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt. All required documents must be submitted to finalise the claims file; compensation is paid within 30 calendar days of the last required document being submitted.
Bonus-malus rules
The insurance premium is differentiated based on the driver's claim history and incidents using the Bonus-Malus system. Drivers without prior claims receive bonus reductions on their premium. The Bonus-Malus class of the insured affects the final premium cost and is tracked at national level as required by Romanian law (Legea 132/2017).
