Emergency medical treatment

Covered

Emergency medical and surgical treatment abroad is covered under the medical expenses guarantee (A.1). The insurer covers consultation fees, surgical and pharmaceutical costs for illness or accident arising during a trip, up to the contracted capital tier: Básica (€3,000), Completa (€6,000), Premium (€20,000) or Excellence (€50,000). Prior authorization from the insurer is required except in genuine emergencies.

Hospitalisation expenses abroad

Covered

Hospitalisation costs abroad (including stay, medical and pharmaceutical services) are included within the overall medical expenses guarantee A.1, subject to the contracted capital tier. When hospitalisation is determined necessary by the insurer's medical team in agreement with the treating physician, the insurer covers transfer to the hospital, the hospital stay and all necessary medical services including pharmaceuticals, up to the contracted limit.

Medical repatriation and evacuation to Spain

Under guarantee A.3, if the insured suffers an illness or accident, the insurer organizes and covers medical repatriation to Spain when medically necessary, including medical escort if required. Repatriation of mortal remains

Covered

Under guarantee B.1, if the insured dies during a covered trip, the insurer covers the administrative procedures and costs necessary for transferring the mortal remains to the place of burial in Spain. Burial and ceremony costs and the cost of the coffin are excluded. If no companion is available to accompany the remains, the insurer provides a round-trip ticket (first class rail, tourist class air) for a person domiciled in Spain designated by family members. The insurer also covers accommodation and subsistence of the companion up to €80/day for a maximum of 3 days. No overall monetary cap on the repatriation service itself.

Winter sports (ski) optional pack

Optional

An optional ski pack can be added to the policy covering: crutch hire costs following a ski accident (up to €150), on-piste rescue/descent costs (up to €2,000), reimbursement of ski pass and loss of ski equipment (up to €300), and ambulance expense reimbursement (up to €600). Ski is excluded from the standard policy as an amateur winter sport; it is only covered when the specific optional ski pack is contracted. The additional coverages within the pack (e.g. baggage delay limits) are also enhanced.

Adventure sports cover

Excluded

Practice of any sport as a professional or federated athlete, and sports competitions, are explicitly excluded. As an amateur, a long list of hazardous activities is excluded, including mountaineering, paragliding, rock climbing, scuba diving, water scooters, rafting, bungee jumping, canyoning, kayaking, white-water activities, speleology, motor racing and bullfighting. Winter sports as an amateur (except skiing with the optional ski pack) are also excluded.

Personal civil liability

Personal civil liability is not found as a coverage in the standalone SegurCaixa Asistencia en Viaje policy documents. The policy does include guarantee A.15 (Fianzas y gastos procesales) which advances legal defence costs (up to €15,000) and criminal bail (up to €10,000) arising from a car accident abroad, but this is a legal assistance guarantee, not general personal liability coverage.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must request prior authorization from the insurer before obtaining medical assistance or other covered services (except in genuine emergencies where prior authorization is materially impossible). Expenses incurred without prior authorization may not be covered or may be subject to reduced reimbursement.

Unauthorized treatment

Expenses and services for which prior insurer authorization was not obtained, and for which no prior authorization was requested, may be excluded from reimbursement. Only genuine emergency situations where authorization was materially impossible to obtain beforehand are exempt from this requirement.

Purchase while abroad

The policy must be taken out before the start of the trip. It can be taken out immediately and involves simple formalities, but it must be contracted prior to beginning the journey. Contracting while already abroad is not permitted.

Chronic conditions

Chronic conditions and ailments under medical treatment prior to the start of the trip are explicitly excluded from coverage. Only acute illnesses or accidents that arise during the trip (not pre-existing) are covered.

Pregnancy

Diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of pregnancy, voluntary termination and childbirth are explicitly excluded from coverage. Pregnancy complications are not covered.

pre_existing_conditions

Pre-existing illnesses and/or congenital conditions, chronic conditions and ailments under medical treatment prior to the start of the trip are explicitly excluded. The insured must declare all known circumstances that may influence risk assessment before policy inception.

coverage_duration_limit

Coverage is valid only for trips not exceeding 180 consecutive days per journey or displacement (per the IPID for the standalone policy). Individual trips exceeding 180 consecutive days are excluded. The policy can be taken out for durations from 1 day up to 6 months.
