Key conditions
Territorial scope
The traffic insurance (MTPL) is valid worldwide under TSL for damage in connection with traffic using a Swedish-registered vehicle, affecting Swedish citizens or persons resident in Sweden. All other coverages (property damage, legal protection, etc.) apply in EEA countries and other countries connected to the Green Card system, and also during transport between these countries. For deregistered (avställd) vehicles, coverage applies in Sweden only. Some countries require a physical Green Card to be presented. The MTPL (trafikförsäkring) is valid in all countries affiliated with the Green Card system. Additionally, per Trafikskadelagen (1975:1410), it is valid worldwide for Swedish citizens or persons domiciled in Sweden for damage caused by a Swedish-registered vehicle. The insurance does not apply when the vehicle is on a circuit designated for motor vehicle racing, e.g. Anderstorp, Gotland Ring, Mantorp, Nürburgring including Nordschleife. The non-MTPL coverages (exklusive trafikförsäkringen) are valid in Green Card countries except Morocco and Tunisia, and do not apply if the vehicle has been abroad for more than 182 days in the preceding 12 months. The MTPL (trafikförsäkring) applies in all countries connected to the Green Card system and during transport between these countries. Under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act (Trafikskadelagen), the MTPL also applies worldwide for Swedish citizens and residents injured in traffic involving Swedish-registered vehicles. The broader vehicle insurance (halvförsäkring/helförsäkring) applies in all EU and EEA countries and Green Card system countries. The insurance is valid in all countries connected to the Green Card system and during transport between these countries. For Swedish citizens or persons resident in Sweden injured in traffic with a Swedish-registered vehicle, the traffic insurance applies worldwide under the Swedish Road Traffic Damage Act (1975:1410), including non-Green Card countries.
Green card rules
Sweden is a member of the Green Card system. Folksam issues an international insurance certificate (Green Card / Grönt kort) on request, free of charge. The Green Card is required for proof of insurance when driving in certain non-EEA Green Card system countries. EEA countries generally accept the vehicle registration document as proof of insurance. The traffic insurance applies worldwide per TSL regardless of Green Card issuance for Swedish citizens/residents.A green card (internationellt trafikförsäkringsbevis) can be issued by If on request, free of charge, and is required in certain Green Card countries. If issues the green card upon the policyholder's request. The vehicle's registration certificate must always be carried when travelling outside the Nordic countries.Coverage applies in countries connected to the international Green Card system and during transport between these countries. Policyholders may request a physical Green Card document free of charge from their local Länsförsäkringar office. The MTPL applies worldwide under Trafikskadelagen for personal injuries to Swedish citizens or residents caused by Swedish-registered vehicles. The insurance is valid in all Green Card system countries. Some countries require a physical or digital Green Card certificate, which can be ordered via the customer portal. See the Swedish Motor Insurers (Trafikförsäkringsföreningen, tff.se) website for the full list of member countries. For Swedish citizens or persons domiciled in Sweden, worldwide coverage applies under the Swedish Road Traffic Damage Act even outside Green Card countries.
Driver restrictions
The policyholder must be the owner and primary user of the vehicle. It is not permitted to register the policy under another person (e.g. a family member) if you are the actual owner; the policy would then be invalid. The driver's licence must be valid in Sweden: EEA licences are valid as long as valid in the home country; non-EEA licences are valid for up to 1 year after Swedish registration. Without a valid Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) or coordination number (samordningsnummer), a policy cannot be taken out. Driving without a valid licence triggers an elevated excess of 10% of one price base amount. Under-24-year-old drivers face a standard excess surcharge of 1,000 SEK on traffic claims. The driver must hold a valid driving licence, driving permit or meet the minimum age required by law or regulation for the vehicle or vehicle combination. The insurance does not cover damage if the driver is under the influence of alcohol (rattfylleri), if the vehicle is operated despite a driving ban (körförbud), or if the vehicle is used for racing, street racing, stunt exercises or during or in connection with criminal activities, riots or gang-related violence. The policyholder must be the registered owner of the vehicle. If the car is registered under another person's name, compensation may be reduced. The insurance generally covers any licensed driver using the vehicle with the owner's permission. An additional deductible of SEK 1,000 applies if the driver is under 24 years of age and is not the registered owner. If the driver lacked a valid driving licence or was criminally impaired by alcohol or other substances, a special deductible equal to 10% of the price base amount applies. The vehicle must not be driven by a driver who is criminally influenced by alcohol or other intoxicants. The vehicle must not be driven by a driver without a valid driving licence. Learner driving is only permitted if the instructor and student meet the legal requirements. An additional excess (ungdomssjälvrisk) applies for privately owned cars/vans when the driver was under 24 and this was not pre-notified: SEK 2,000. For company-owned cars/vans with a driver under 24: 5% of the price base amount. A criminal excess of 10% of the price base amount applies for DUI, unlicensed driving, and intentional or grossly negligent causation of damage.
Claim notification deadline
Claims must be reported to Folksam as soon as possible. Theft, unlawful taking, vandalism, collision with animal, or damage caused by an unknown motor vehicle must also be reported to the police in the country where the event occurred. A copy of the police report must be provided to Folksam. Damage occurring during transport on another vehicle must also be reported to the transport company. The right to compensation is lost if legal action is not commenced within 10 years of the event giving rise to the claim (prescription). Once a claim has been submitted, there is always at least 6 months to commence legal action from the date Folksam declares its final position.Damage must be reported to If as soon as possible. Theft, vandalism and accidents involving wild or domestic animals must also be reported to the police. For roadside assistance, towing or glazier services, If must be contacted before ordering. If has the right to direct the choice of repairer and repair method. The policyholder has 10 years from the date of loss to bring a claim (general limitation period); if the claim was reported to If within this period, the claimant has at least 6 months after If's final decision to bring legal proceedings.Claims must be reported to Länsförsäkringar as soon as possible. Theft or vandalism must first be reported to the police. Damage can be reported online via the Länsförsäkringar website, 'Mina sidor', or the mobile app. The statutory limitation period under Swedish insurance law is 10 years from the date of the loss event (for events after 1 January 2015). For abroad incidents, contact SOS International at +46 8 670 40 00.Claims must be reported to Trygg-Hansa without delay. If the policyholder is served with a compensation claim after a traffic accident or summoned to court as a defendant, this must be reported immediately. The policyholder must not admit liability or agree to compensation amounts independently. The general prescription period for traffic damage compensation is 10 years from the incident; after reporting within 10 years, the claimant always has at least 6 months to bring proceedings after a final decision has been issued.
Bonus malus rules
Traffic insurance uses a bonus/malus class system (classes 1–8+). New policies start in class 7. Policies with a claim in the last year start in class 6. Moving from class 7 to class 8 requires 15 consecutive claim-free years. Each claim resulting in a payout reduces the class by one step from the next insurance year. Each claim-free year moves the policy up one class. Policyholders with at least 15 claim-free years do not lose their bonus for the first claim. The bonus is not reduced in certain exempt cases (e.g. damage while vehicle was stolen, damage inspected by police/authority, or damage caused by a proven third party without contributory fault). A separate vagnskade (own-damage) bonus system applies to comprehensive coverages. The bonus system (fordonsbonus) applies if stated in the insurance certificate. Sweden does not have a centralized statutory bonus-malus system; each insurer applies individual merit-rating. Each claim-free policy year moves the policy one step up to a higher bonus class. A claim resulting in a payout from the traffic insurance (trafikförsäkring) and/or collision damage insurance (vagnskadeförsäkring) reduces the bonus by three classes from the following policy year. The bonus affects the annual premium.Sweden does not have a centralized statutory bonus-malus system; each insurer applies its own individual merit-rating scheme. Länsförsäkringar applies a bonus system: policyholders earn a discount on the MTPL premium for each claim-free year. Every claim resulting in a payout from the MTPL causes the bonus class to decrease. There are 7 bonus classes; bonus class 7 requires at least 20 consecutive claim-free years. In all bonus classes except class 7, a deductible of SEK 1,000 applies for private individuals (SEK 3,500 for legal entities). When the vehicle also holds halvförsäkring or vagnskadeförsäkring, the traffic bonus discount applies to those coverages as well. For company-owned vehicles, there are nine bonus classes. New policies without prior bonus history are placed in bonus class 7. Bonus class 9 requires 15 consecutive claim-free years; bonus class 8 requires 10 consecutive claim-free years. Each claim resulting in a traffic insurance payout reduces the bonus by three classes from the next policy period. If the policyholder has 15 or more claim-free years, the bonus is reduced by only two classes (from class 9 to class 7). Bonus is not reduced for payouts solely for injured reindeer or dogs, thefts/joyriding, police inspections, or where a third party is solely at fault. For privately owned vehicles, the bonus/malus system is not explicitly detailed in the T&C; pricing factors are specified in the insurance certificate.
