Länsförsäkringar
Länsförsäkringar is a motor third-party liability insurance for the SE market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Länsförsäkringar pays compensation directly to the injured party under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act (Trafikskadelagen). Claimants can file claims directly with Länsförsäkringar via the website, the 'Mina sidor' portal, or the mobile app. For abroad incidents, contact SOS International (+46 8 670 40 00). For emergency assistance, the alarm centre is open 24/7 at 020-59 00 00.
Geographic scope
SE
Gäller i länder anslutna till Gröna Kort-systemet och EU/EES-länder. Trafikförsäkringen gäller dessutom alltid i hela världen för skador som ett svenskregistrerat fordon orsakat enligt trafikskadelagen.
Unique selling points
- Länsförsäkringar insures one in every three passenger cars in Sweden, reflecting market-leading scale and trust.
- 24/7 emergency alarm centre (020-59 00 00) and SOS International partnership ensure round-the-clock roadside and abroad assistance.
- Customer-owned mutual structure means profits are returned to policyholders rather than external shareholders.
- Optional MER add-on covers 75% of rental car costs for up to 60 days or SEK 150 per day cash, extending mobility during repairs.
- Reduced deductibles for both wildlife collisions and vandalism apply even at halvförsäkring level, a benefit often restricted to comprehensive tiers at other insurers.
Coverage limits
Bodily Injury Liability
Covered
Covers personal injury to drivers, passengers, and third parties (pedestrians, cyclists) caused by the insured vehicle in traffic. Compensation is paid under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act (Trafikskadelagen). The maximum payout per event from a single vehicle's MTPL is SEK 300 million (excluding interest and court costs). All persons injured in traffic have the right to compensation regardless of fault.
Property Damage Liability
Covered
Covers damage caused to third-party property (other vehicles, infrastructure, objects) in traffic. The combined maximum per event from the MTPL is SEK 300 million (bodily injury takes priority). Damage to the policyholder's own vehicle is not covered under MTPL alone.
Legal Defence (Rättsskydd)
Conditional
Covers attorney and court costs in disputes related to car ownership or traffic incidents (e.g. disputes arising from traffic damage, buying or selling a vehicle, or repairs). Maximum payout is SEK 240,000 per dispute, of which up to SEK 40,000 for investigation and witness costs. Deductible is 20% of total costs, minimum SEK 1,000. Legal defence is included in the halvförsäkring (half insurance) and helförsäkring (comprehensive insurance) tiers, not in standalone MTPL only. The dispute must be triable in a general court (tingsrätt, hovrätt or Högsta domstolen) and must not concern gross negligence, DUI, or unlicensed driving.
Green Card
Covered
The MTPL policy provides coverage in all countries connected to the International Green Card system and during transport between these countries. The motor liability insurance (trafikförsäkringen) also applies worldwide under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act for Swedish citizens and residents injured in traffic involving Swedish-registered vehicles. Policyholders can request a physical Green Card document free of charge from their local Länsförsäkringar office.
Roadside Assistance (Räddningsförsäkring)
Conditional
Roadside assistance (bärgning, räddning, bogsering) is included in halvförsäkring and helförsäkring, not in standalone MTPL. It covers towing and rescue if the vehicle breaks down, gets a flat tyre, or the key is lost or damaged. The 24/7 alarm centre can be reached at 020-59 00 00, and SOS International (+46 8 670 40 00) for abroad incidents. Deductible for towing is SEK 1,500 when halvförsäkring applies.
Driver Accident (Personal Injury via MTPL)
Covered
Under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act (Trafikskadelagen), the driver of the insured vehicle is entitled to compensation for personal injury caused by the vehicle in traffic. Compensation covers medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and permanent disability. Drivers are covered regardless of fault. Additional personal accident coverage above the statutory MTPL minimum may be obtained via supplementary halvförsäkring or helförsäkring add-ons.
Passenger Accident (Personal Injury via MTPL)
Covered
Passengers of the insured vehicle are entitled to compensation for personal injury under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act (Trafikskadelagen). Both drivers and passengers have equal right to compensation regardless of fault. The maximum per event is SEK 300 million (shared with bodily injury and property damage).
Key conditions
territorial_scope
The MTPL (trafikförsäkring) applies in all countries connected to the Green Card system and during transport between these countries. Under the Swedish Motor Traffic Damage Act (Trafikskadelagen), the MTPL also applies worldwide for Swedish citizens and residents injured in traffic involving Swedish-registered vehicles. green_card_rules

Policyholders may request a physical Green Card document free of charge from their local Länsförsäkringar office. The MTPL applies worldwide under Trafikskadelagen for personal injuries to Swedish citizens or residents caused by Swedish-registered vehicles.
driver_restrictions
The policyholder must be the registered owner of the vehicle. If the car is registered under another person's name, compensation may be reduced. The insurance generally covers any licensed driver using the vehicle with the owner's permission. An additional deductible of SEK 1,000 applies if the driver is under 24 years of age and is not the registered owner. If the driver lacked a valid driving licence or was criminally impaired by alcohol or other substances, a special deductible equal to 10% of the price base amount applies.
claim_notification_deadline
Claims must be reported to Länsförsäkringar as soon as possible. Theft or vandalism must first be reported to the police. Damage can be reported online via the Länsförsäkringar website, 'Mina sidor', or the mobile app. The statutory limitation period under Swedish insurance law is 10 years from the date of the loss event (for events after 1 January 2015). For abroad incidents, contact SOS International at +46 8 670 40 00.
bonus_malus_rules
Sweden does not have a centralized statutory bonus-malus system; each insurer applies its own individual merit-rating scheme. Länsförsäkringar applies a bonus system: policyholders earn a discount on the MTPL premium for each claim-free year. Every claim resulting in a payout from the MTPL causes the bonus class to decrease. There are 7 bonus classes; bonus class 7 requires at least 20 consecutive claim-free years. In all bonus classes except class 7, a deductible of SEK 1,000 applies for private individuals (SEK 3,500 for legal entities). When the vehicle also holds halvförsäkring or vagnskadeförsäkring, the traffic bonus discount applies to those coverages as well.
