Direct payment

Repairs must be pre-approved by Folksam, which proposes an environmentally approved repair workshop. The right to insurance compensation cannot be assigned (e.g. to a workshop or repairer) without Folksam's consent.

Geographic scope

EEA countries and other countries affiliated with the Green Card system

Cover applies in EEA countries and other Green Card countries, and during transport between them. Deregistered (avställd) vehicles are only covered in Sweden. The MTPL cover applies worldwide under the Traffic Damage Act (TSL) for damage caused by a Swedish-registered vehicle to a Swedish citizen or resident in Sweden.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

SEK 300,000,000

Trafikförsäkring is the statutory MTPL cover, mandatory for all vehicles used in traffic, and compensates personal injury caused to third parties by the insured vehicle. Bodily injury and property damage share a single combined ceiling of SEK 300,000,000, not two separate limits.

Source

Property damage liability

SEK 300,000,000

Covers damage that the insured vehicle causes to another person's vehicle and/or property outside the insured vehicle. Shares the same combined SEK 300,000,000 ceiling as bodily injury liability; the trafikförsäkring does not cover damage to the policyholder's own vehicle.

Legal defence against third-party claims

Covered

Folksam negotiates with claimants and, in litigation, pays the policyholder's reasonable and relevant court costs, and also covers certain counsel costs of the injured party at out-of-court settlement, capped by the government's rättshjälp hourly-rate norm rather than a fixed kronor amount. This claims-defence function is built into the MTPL cover itself and is distinct from the separate Rättsskyddsförsäkring (own-dispute legal protection, capped at SEK 300,000), which is not included in a stand-alone Trafikförsäkring.

Green Card / international MTPL validity

Covered

The MTPL cover is valid in EEA countries and other countries affiliated with the Green Card system, and while the vehicle is transported between these countries.

Roadside assistance (Folksam Assistans)

Excluded

Folksam Assistans and the rental-car cover are not part of a stand-alone Trafikförsäkring. The T&Cs state that Folksam Assistans and Hyrbilsförsäkring terminate if the ordinary car insurance is changed to comprise only the trafikförsäkring, and Assistans/Hyrbil can only be added as riders to a halv- or helförsäkring (or, for light trucks, to Lätt lastbilsförsäkring Stor).

Driver personal injury / crisis support

Covered

Within the Trafikförsäkring, damaged clothing and personal belongings carried by an injured driver are compensated up to 25% of a prisbasbelopp per person (helmets/protective equipment uncapped). In addition, Kristerapi (crisis therapy) — 10 sessions with no deductible, plus reasonable travel and interpreter costs up to SEK 4,000 — is available to the driver who uses the vehicle with the owner's permission, and is included even in the bare Trafik tier.

Passenger personal injury / crisis support

Covered

Damaged clothing and personal belongings carried by an injured passenger or other person are compensated up to 25% of a prisbasbelopp per person (helmets/protective equipment uncapped). Kristerapi (crisis therapy) — 10 sessions with no deductible, plus reasonable travel and interpreter costs up to SEK 4,000 — is also extended to passengers in or on the vehicle, and is included even in the bare Trafik tier.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Coverage applies in EEA countries and other countries affiliated with the Green Card system, including during transport between them. Deregistered (avställd) vehicles are only covered in Sweden. The trafikförsäkring itself always applies worldwide under the Traffic Damage Act (TSL) for damage caused in traffic by a Swedish-registered vehicle to a Swedish citizen or resident.

Green card rules

The policy is valid in EEA member states and other Green Card system countries, and while the vehicle is in transit between them.

Driver restrictions

An increased deductible of SEK 1,000 applies if the driver was under 24 at the time of the accident. A deductible of 10% of a price base amount applies if the driver lacked a valid licence, breached driving-lesson rules, or was convicted of drink-driving, gross drink-driving, or caused the accident with intent or gross negligence. The combined MTPL deductible may not exceed 10% of a price base amount for a private individual under TSL.

Claim notification deadline

Report the incident to Folksam as soon as possible. Theft, taking of the vehicle without consent, vandalism, or damage caused by another unknown motor vehicle must also be reported to the police in the country where the incident occurred.

Bonus-malus rules

New MTPL policies start in bonus class 7 (class 6 if a claim occurred in the previous year). Each claim paid under the trafikförsäkring lowers the class by one step from the following insurance year; each claim-free year raises the class by one step. Reaching class 8 requires 15 consecutive claim-free years, and a policyholder with at least 15 claim-free years keeps the discount after a first claim. The discount is not reduced in specific no-fault cases listed in the T&Cs (e.g. reindeer/dog-only claims, theft, police inspection, or proven non-liability).
