Direct payment

For property claims Dina decides whether the vehicle is repaired, replaced with an equivalent vehicle, or settled in cash, and may direct the claimant to an approved repair shop. For traffic insurance (trafikförsäkring) claims, Dina pays the injured third party directly according to the Traffic Damage Act and then has the right to recover from the policyholder an amount corresponding to the applicable deductible, capped at 10% of the price base amount per claim for a private individual.

Geographic scope

Nordic countries and countries covered by the Green Card agreement, including transport between these countries

Traffic insurance (trafikförsäkring) is valid in Nordic countries and Green Card countries, and applies worldwide under the Swedish Traffic Damage Act for injuries suffered by Swedish citizens or residents caused by traffic with a Swedish-registered vehicle. A vehicle covered only by a special off-road (avställnings-) insurance is covered solely within Sweden.

Unique selling points

  • No extra 'youth deductible' is applied when the policyholder taking out the policy is themselves under 24, unlike the industry-standard surcharge for young drivers.
  • Traffic insurance pays for damaged clothing and personal belongings up to 25% of the price base amount, and for lawfully worn protective helmets/gear with no monetary limit at all.
  • Round-the-clock claims service every day of the year, with a dedicated number for assistance abroad.
  • Quotes and policy purchase are available online any time, day or night, with a price shown in under 30 seconds.
  • Dina is a customer-owned mutual insurer with roots going back 250 years.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability (traffic insurance)

Covered

Traffic insurance (trafikförsäkring) compensates personal injury to drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other third parties caused by traffic with the insured vehicle, in accordance with the Swedish Traffic Damage Act (trafikskadelagen). No specific monetary cap is stated in the policy documents; compensation follows the rules and limits set out in trafikskadelagen.

Property damage liability (traffic insurance)

Covered

Traffic insurance compensates property damage caused by traffic with the insured vehicle in accordance with trafikskadelagen. Compensation may be reduced for contributory negligence, but full compensation up to 25% of the price base amount (prisbasbelopp) is always paid regardless of contributory negligence, with reductions applied above that threshold. Damaged clothing and personal belongings carried by an injured driver or passenger are compensated up to 25% of the prisbasbelopp, while lawfully worn helmets and other personal protective equipment damaged in the same event are compensated without a monetary limit. No overall monetary cap for property damage liability is stated; compensation otherwise follows trafikskadelagen.

Legal expenses / legal protection

SEK 300,000

As part of traffic insurance itself, Dina pays reasonable litigation costs if the policyholder is sued for damages arising from the insured vehicle, and, where the policyholder suffers a compensable personal injury, necessary and reasonable legal representation costs during out-of-court claims handling — both without a stated monetary cap. A broader legal protection (Rättsskyddsförsäkring), covering civil disputes and certain criminal cases up to SEK 300,000, requires at least a Halvförsäkring (traffic + partial casco) and is not available with a stand-alone, traffic-only policy.

Green Card

Covered

Traffic insurance automatically extends to Nordic countries and countries covered by the Green Card agreement, including transport between them. For travel to countries outside this system, policyholders can request a physical Green Card (an international proof of valid traffic insurance) from Dina free of charge; without it, local cover may need to be purchased for the intended period abroad even though the Swedish traffic insurance technically remains in force.

Roadside assistance / rescue transport

Optional

Rescue transport (Räddningsförsäkring), covering transport of the driver, passengers and the vehicle after a breakdown, accident or theft, and Assistansförsäkring, covering rental-car costs while the vehicle is unavailable, are optional coverages that require at least a Halvförsäkring (traffic + partial casco); they are not included in a stand-alone traffic-only policy. No monetary coverage ceiling is stated; the SEK 220 per day allowance under clause 422(d) is a per-diem travel/subsistence allowance for collecting a repaired vehicle, not a coverage limit.

Driver personal injury (no-fault)

Covered

Personal injury to the driver of the insured vehicle is compensated under the no-fault personal-injury scheme of the Swedish Traffic Damage Act as part of traffic insurance, together with injury to passengers and other third parties; no separate driver-accident sum insured is stated in the policy documents.

Passenger personal injury (no-fault)

Covered

Personal injury to passengers in the insured vehicle is compensated under the no-fault personal-injury scheme of the Swedish Traffic Damage Act as part of traffic insurance, alongside injury to the driver and other third parties; no separate passenger-accident sum insured is stated in the policy documents.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Traffic insurance is valid in the Nordic countries and countries covered by the Green Card agreement, including transport between them, and applies worldwide under trafikskadelagen for injuries to Swedish citizens or Swedish residents caused by a Swedish-registered vehicle. A vehicle insured only with off-road (avställning) insurance is covered solely within Sweden.

Green card rules

Green Card countries are listed on the Swedish Motor Insurers' Committee's (Trafikförsäkringsföreningen) website. A physical Green Card, required for some countries outside the Green Card system, can be ordered free of charge from Dina and is sent by post.

Driver restrictions

An additional deductible of SEK 1,000 (ungdomssjälvrisk) applies if a driver other than the policyholder was under 24 years old at the time of the accident; Dina states it does not apply this extra deductible when the person who took out the policy is themselves under 24. A deductible of 10% of the price base amount applies if the driver lacked the required licence, drove without reaching the required age, engaged in unauthorised practice driving, drove under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicant, caused the damage intentionally or through gross negligence, or committed the traffic offence of 'rattsurfning' (using a handheld phone while driving).

Claim notification deadline

Claims must be reported to Dina without undue delay; if the policyholder is sued for damages, Dina must be notified immediately for the insurance to cover litigation costs. The right to claim compensation lapses (preskription) after ten years from the event giving rise to the claim, with a further six months from a final claims decision if the claim was reported in time.

Bonus-malus rules

The policy documents describe no bonus-malus discount ladder. Premiums for cars in vehicle classes 01 and 50 are instead calculated using an annual mileage class (five bands from 'up to 10,000 km' to 'over 25,000 km'), and for all vehicles by the tariff zone based on the policyholder's registered home address (or place of business for vehicles used commercially).
