Direct payment

Under the traffic insurance, Hedvig negotiates directly with the third-party claimant and pays the compensation the insured owes under the Traffic Damage Act; the insured must not independently admit liability, accept a claim, or pay compensation without Hedvig's approval, and must immediately forward any lawsuit to Hedvig.

Geographic scope

Green Card area (EU/EEA and affiliated countries)

Applies in all countries connected to the Green Card system and during transport between them; also applies worldwide for Swedish citizens and residents injured by a Swedish-registered vehicle under the Traffic Damage Act.

Unique selling points

  • No lock-in period — traffic insurance can be cancelled at any time with no early-termination cost, making it usable as a genuine short-term/temporary policy.
  • Same deductible for every member regardless of driver age, removing the young-driver deductible surcharges common at other insurers.
  • Fully digital claims handling in the Hedvig app with an average response time of around 5 minutes.
  • Coverage level can be switched instantly between traffic, half, and full insurance at any time directly in the app.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability (Third-Party)

SEK 300,000,000

Compensates personal injury to persons in and outside the vehicle caused by an accident in traffic, subject to the traffic insurance's overall 300 million SEK per-event limit, which is shared with property damage claims (not a separate limit).

Property Damage Liability (Third-Party)

SEK 300,000,000

Compensates damage to third-party property (e.g. other vehicles, buildings) caused by the insured vehicle in traffic, subject to the same shared 300 million SEK per-event limit as bodily injury claims.

Legal Defence (Traffic Liability Claims)

Covered

Within the traffic insurance itself, Hedvig negotiates with the claimant and, in the event of a lawsuit, pays the insured's reasonable court costs and, where necessary, legal representation costs for defending a liability claim; this is separate from the standalone Rättsskydd module (which has its own cap and is only included with Delkasko/Helförsäkring).

Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)

Conditional

A Green Card, proving the vehicle is traffic-insured in Sweden, can be issued by Hedvig on request for travel in certain Green Card countries where physical proof is still required.

Roadside Assistance / Towing

Optional

Not part of the standalone Trafikförsäkring; the customer can add it at any time via the Hedvig app by upgrading to Delkasko/Halvförsäkring or Helförsäkring, which include the Räddning/bärgning module.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The traffic insurance applies in all countries within the Green Card system and during transport between them; it also applies worldwide for Swedish citizens and residents injured by a Swedish-registered vehicle, under the Traffic Damage Act.

Green card rules

A physical Green Card may still be required as proof of insurance in certain member countries; contact Hedvig in advance so a card can be issued and posted to you.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle must not be driven by anyone criminally impaired by alcohol, drugs, or other intoxicants, and the driver must hold the driving license required for the vehicle; a special surcharge deductible of 10% of the price base amount applies to traffic claims caused by an unlicensed or impaired driver or through gross negligence.

Claim notification deadline

Claims and third-party liability demands must be reported to Hedvig without delay; Hedvig's instructions must then be followed and any lawsuit against the insured must be reported immediately.

Bonus-malus rules

Sweden does not use a formal bonus-malus class system; instead the premium is influenced by the policyholder's overall claims history across all their Hedvig policies, together with factors such as annual mileage, age and place of residence.
