SOS International acts as the assistance company; for hospitalization or major medical interventions outside the Nordic countries, SOS International must be contacted in advance for approval. Costs for treatment not approved or not carried out at recommended care providers may not be covered. For EU-country medical costs the insured should first contact the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

For travel outside the Nordic countries, SOS International (+46 8 136 060) must be contacted for approval before hospitalization, major medical interventions (e.g. X-ray, admission to hospital, or continued investigation after an acute doctor visit). At life-threatening conditions, emergency services (112 in Europe) must be contacted immediately first.

Unauthorized treatment

If treatment is not carried out by one of Folksam's recommended care providers, approved by SOS International or Folksam, the costs may not be covered or reimbursed, or the insured may be required to bear part of the cost if it exceeds the approved amount.

Purchase while abroad

The extended travel insurance (for trips exceeding 45 days) must be taken out and paid before the first 45 days abroad have passed. It is not possible to extend the insurance after the first 45 days have elapsed. The standard travel insurance included in the home insurance cannot be purchased while already abroad.

Chronic conditions

Chronically ill persons, or those currently being treated or recently treated for a disease or injury, may need to carry out a medical pre-assessment (förhandsbedömning) before traveling abroad to verify whether the insurance will apply fully. If the insurance does not apply fully, the insured may be responsible for their own medical costs.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is not specifically mentioned in the product sources. Acute and unexpected pregnancy complications arising during the trip may be covered under general acute illness cover, provided no care need for the same condition existed at departure and no treatment was sought in the three months before departure.

pre_existing_conditions

No compensation is paid if: a care need already existed at the start of the trip; deterioration in health is due to the same or similar symptoms for which treatment was sought in the three months before departure; or care is needed abroad for an illness or accident that occurred in Sweden. A free medical pre-assessment service is available at folksam.se/forhandsbedomning.

coverage_duration_limit

The travel insurance (as part of home insurance) covers the first 45 days of a trip. For trips longer than 45 days, an extended travel insurance must be purchased and paid before the first 45 days abroad have elapsed. The extended insurance covers from day 46 onwards and must be arranged in advance; it cannot be added retroactively.
