Wüstenrot Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft
Wüstenrot
Wüstenrot is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Austria market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
According to Wüstenrot's official service description for the Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung (MTPL), the insurer pays compensation directly to the injured/damaged third party rather than reimbursing the policyholder: the MTPL cover pays money to people injured in an accident, and other entities such as the health insurance fund, fire brigade, or road maintenance authority also get their costs refunded directly by the MTPL insurance, not via the policyholder.
Geographic scope
Europe in the geographical sense, and all states party to the Green Card multilateral agreement
Coverage extends to Europe in the geographical sense and at least to the states that signed the 30 May 2002 multilateral agreement between national insurance bureaus of the EEA and associated states; ends when the contract ends even if the Green Card shows a longer validity.
Unique selling points
- Coverage extends beyond motor vehicles to e-bikes, scooters, bicycles and wheelchairs under the same Mobility Liability policy.
- Selectable combined liability sum of 12 or 20 million EUR, well above the statutory minimum of 7.79 million EUR.
- At the 20 million EUR sum insured, an automatic claims-forgiveness benefit prevents a bonus-malus downgrade after the first at-fault accident.
- Round-the-clock assistance package covering breakdown, accident, misfuelling, lost keys, flat tyres and EV battery depletion is included as standard.
- Can be taken out fully online and independently of any existing car policy, with additional vehicles addable to the contract at any time.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury liability
Not established from the insurer's documents
Austrian MTPL uses one combined sum insured per claim covering personal injury, property damage and pure financial loss together (AKHB 2023 Art. 6.1), not separate sublimits. Wüstenrot offers this combined liability sum at 12 or 20 million EUR, well above the statutory minimum of 7.79 million EUR.
Property damage liability
Not established from the insurer's documents
Property damage is covered under the same single combined sum insured as bodily injury and financial loss (AKHB 2023 Art. 6.1). Wüstenrot's combined liability sum is available at 12 or 20 million EUR, above the statutory minimum of 7.79 million EUR.
Legal defence against unjustified claims
Covered
The policy covers the payment of justified claims and the costs of defending against unjustified third-party claims; such costs, interest and other incidental charges are credited against the combined sum insured (AKHB 2023 Art. 1 and Art. 6.1). A separate, optional standalone legal protection (Rechtsschutz) product also exists for pursuing the policyholder's own claims.
Green Card / International Motor Insurance Card
Not established from the insurer's documents
In states for which a Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card) is issued, or for which its presentation is waived under the 30 May 2002 multilateral agreement, cover applies at least to the extent prescribed for foreign-plated vehicles in that state or the agreed contractual scope; cover ends when the policy ends even if the card shows a later expiry (AKHB 2023 Art. 5).
Roadside and mobility assistance
Covered
The Mobility Liability Insurance includes, as standard, assistance for breakdown, accident, misfuelling, lost keys, tyre puncture, flat batteries in electric vehicles, a replacement vehicle (up to 5 days after theft), hotel accommodation, and return transport of the vehicle from abroad.
Driver accident insurance
Optional
An optional driver accident insurance add-on can be booked alongside the Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance to provide financial protection for the driver in the event of an accident.
Passenger accident insurance
Optional
The optional occupant accident add-on extends financial protection against accident consequences to passengers as well as the driver.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
Cover applies to Europe in the geographical sense and at least the territory of the states that signed the 30 May 2002 multilateral agreement between the national insurance bureaus of the EEA member states and other associated states; different terms can be agreed.
Green card rules
In states where a Green Card is issued or its presentation is waived under the 2002 agreement, cover applies at least to the extent prescribed for foreign-plated vehicles in that state or the contractually agreed scope; the insurer may claim reimbursement if it must pay under local law despite no liability toward the policyholder under the contract.
Driver restrictions
The driver must be legally authorised to drive the vehicle and must not be impaired by alcohol or drugs; breach of these duties can result in the insurer being released from its obligation to pay, subject to statutory limits. Policyholders under 23 years old are excluded from vehicles with power exceeding 105 kW under Wüstenrot's underwriting rules for new private contracts.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder must notify the insurer in writing of the claim, any claim raised by the injured third party, or the start of related administrative or court proceedings within one week of becoming aware of it.
Bonus-malus rules
Premium is set under a 19-level (steps 0/1 to 16/17) bonus-malus scale starting at base level 9; a claim-free observation period (1 Oct-30 Sep) lowers the premium by one step at the next due date, while a chargeable claim raises it by three steps (AKHB 2023 Art. 15). At a 20 million EUR sum insured, Wüstenrot automatically includes a claims-forgiveness benefit so the first at-fault accident in a period does not trigger a malus reclassification.
