Direct payment

For third-party liability claims DVV pays the compensation owed directly to the injured third party; for glass breakage repaired by Carglass and for Omnium repairs done by an approved repairer, DVV applies a third-party-payer system so the insured only settles any non-covered damage, the deductible and recoverable VAT with the repairer.

Geographic scope

Belgium (nationwide)

Coverage is granted for accidents occurring in any country shown on the international motor insurance certificate (green card) that is not expressly crossed out; abroad, the cover follows the compulsory motor liability law of that country, but never less than the cover granted by Belgian law.

Unique selling points

  • DVV Stars loyalty points let claim-free, faithful customers keep their bonus-malus degree after an at-fault accident or buy out their deductible.
  • The bonus-malus scale can drop as low as degree -4 (below the usual 0 floor), and the 'Bonus Booster' automatically resets clients to degree 0 after 5 consecutive claim-free years.
  • 'Drive for Life' guarantees a lifetime third-party liability contract for customers over 60 with at least 5 claim-free years at DVV.
  • Young drivers can get up to 45% off (children of long-standing DVV clients) or 30% off (other drivers under 36) plus 3 months of free RC premium in the first year.
  • Free 24/7 accident assistance hotline combined with a network of over 2,000 approved repairers offering a replacement vehicle for the full repair period.

Bodily injury liability

unlimited

There is no ceiling on indemnification for damage resulting from bodily injuries caused to third parties by the insured vehicle.

Source

Property damage liability

€100,000,000

The indemnification limit for material damage is 100 million euros per claim; this amount is indexed in line with the law of 21 November 1989 on compulsory motor liability insurance.

Legal Protection (civil recourse and criminal defence)

€30,000

Optional Legal Protection guarantee covering civil recourse and the insured's criminal defence, with reimbursement of lawyer, expert and bailiff fees and judicial/extrajudicial costs up to 30,000 EUR; a separate indemnity of up to 7,500 EUR applies if the responsible third party is insolvent.

International motor insurance card (Green Card)

Covered

DVV issues an insurance certificate serving as proof of insurance; the mandatory RC guarantee is valid in every country shown on this certificate that is not expressly crossed out, in addition to Belgium.

Source

Post-accident roadside assistance (Belgium)

Covered

Included free of charge with the base RC contract: 24/7 towing of the immobilised vehicle to a garage in Belgium and transport of uninjured passengers to one of their homes, following a traffic accident in Belgium or within 30 km beyond the border, regardless of fault. If the assistance centre is not called, towing reimbursement is capped at 250 EUR unless the insured could not reasonably contact the centre.

Source

Driver insurance (bodily injury/death of the driver)

Optional

Optional guarantee compensating the driver of the insured vehicle for bodily injury or death following a traffic accident, irrespective of fault; sums insured for Death, Permanent Invalidity and Treatment Costs are chosen by the policyholder in the special conditions. Under the linked 'BOB' extension, default amounts of 12,500 EUR (death), 25,000 EUR (permanent invalidity) and 5,000 EUR (treatment costs) apply to the designated substitute driver unless higher Driver-insurance sums were purchased.

Passenger / weak road-user injury compensation

unlimited

Under the mandatory indemnification obligations of the RC guarantee, DVV compensates, without needing to establish fault, bodily injury and clothing damage suffered by weak road users and by passengers of the insured vehicle (articles 29bis/29ter of the law of 21 November 1989); as with all bodily-injury claims, there is no indemnification ceiling.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Coverage applies to accidents on public roads or public/private land, in Belgium and in every country listed on the insurance certificate that is not expressly crossed out.

Green card rules

When a claim occurs outside Belgium, the cover provided is that required by the compulsory motor insurance legislation of the country where the accident occurred; this foreign law can never deprive the insured of the broader cover Belgian law grants.

Driver restrictions

The insurer has a recourse right against the policyholder/insured if, at the time of the claim, the vehicle was driven by someone below the legal minimum age, without a valid licence for that vehicle, in breach of specific licence restrictions, or under an ongoing driving ban in Belgium.

Claim notification deadline

Every claim must be reported in writing immediately and at the latest within 8 days of its occurrence, unless notification as soon as reasonably possible was given later.

Bonus-malus rules

The a-posteriori bonus-malus scale runs from degree -4 to degree 22 (base level 14, or 11 for limited private/commute use); each claim-free year lowers the degree by 1, and each year with one or more claims raises it by 5 per claim. DVV additionally allows the degree to fall to -4 (below the standard 0 floor) and automatically resets policyholders above degree 0 back to 0 after 5 consecutive claim-free years ('Bonus Booster').
