Unique selling points

  • Driver coverage (Førerdækning) is included in the base MTPL policy at no extra charge, ensuring the driver receives compensation for personal injury in a solo accident on the same basis as third-party liability — a benefit competitors typically sell as a paid add-on.
  • Tryg is Denmark's largest insurer with a 24/7 manned alarm centre staffed with multilingual experts, ensuring immediate roadside assistance and claims handling anywhere in Europe at any time.
  • Repairs at Tryg's network of approved partner workshops (fordelsværksteder) include a free loaner car for the full duration of repairs and up to 5 years' warranty on repair work, at no additional premium.
  • The Værdigaranti add-on provides new-for-old replacement for up to 2 years from first registration plus an additional 15% value top-up on total loss or theft regardless of the car's age (maximum as stated in policy), giving significantly higher pay-outs than the standard market valuation approach.
  • Online purchase with a 10% discount is available in minutes via tryg.dk, with instant policy issuance, self-service mileage updates, and digital claims filing through 'Min side'.

Legal defence (retshjælp)

Conditional

Covers the insured's legal costs in certain private civil disputes brought before courts or arbitration tribunals. Under the private car policy (2409), legal defence requires that at least a delkasko or kasko coverage has been purchased. A special deductible applies as stated in the policy agreement. The maximum covered amount is DKK 200,000 (up to DKK 250,000 if the opposing party appeals after a first-instance win).

Green Card

Covered

The Green Card (international motor insurance certificate) is provided as part of the mandatory third-party liability insurance. Assistance includes jump-starts, wheel changes, door unlocking, fuel delivery, towing and transport, and passenger transportation to a shared destination in Denmark. Driver coverage (Førerdækning)

Covered

Included as part of the base MTPL policy (Personbil privat 2409). Covers personal injury consequences for the driver when the accident is directly caused by a traffic accident involving the insured vehicle. Compensation is calculated under the Danish Damages Liability Act (Erstatningsansvarsloven) and covers permanent disability, medical expenses, dental damage, lost earnings, loss of earning capacity, loss of provider, and funeral expenses. Does not apply when the driver is not lawfully in possession of the vehicle, is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, acts intentionally or with gross negligence, lacks a mandatory driving licence (unless shown that the accident was not due to lack of driving ability), or during commercial transport of goods.

Passenger accident (Auto ulykkesforsikring)

Optional

Available as an optional add-on. Covers drivers and passengers transported in the insured vehicle for accidental injury directly resulting from a traffic accident. Compensation is provided according to statutory insurance sums (index-regulated from 2016 base): death benefit DKK 1,049,895, permanent disability up to DKK 2,099,770 (at 100% disability, minimum 5% to qualify), dental damage up to DKK 63,024. Maximum total compensation per accident is DKK 5,249,374 for death and DKK 10,498,702 for disability. Compensation is reduced by 50% for persons aged 70 or over, and ceases entirely at age 75. Coverage applies in Europe and Green Card countries.

Key conditions

territorial_scope

The MTPL (ansvarsforsikring) covers in Europe and in countries outside Europe that are members of the Green Card scheme. For trucks over 4 tonnes total weight, cover outside the EU/EEA area requires a special agreement with Tryg. The MTPL does not cover liability for damage to transported goods when the damage occurs outside Denmark. Roadside assistance (Tryg Vejhjælp) covers Denmark (excluding Greenland and the Faroe Islands) and on route E65 to Ystad as well as 25 km into Sweden and Germany. Extended European assistance covers geographical Europe plus Russia up to the Ural mountains, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and Iran, but not Greenland, the Faroe Islands or Iceland.

green_card_rules

The Green Card is an international motor insurance certificate and serves as proof of mandatory MTPL cover when driving abroad. The policy covers all countries listed on the Green Card. In Green Card countries, cover is provided according to the law of the country concerned, but at minimum at the Danish statutory limits. In other countries, cover is at Danish statutory limits. Only part I of the vehicle registration certificate should be carried in the vehicle when driving abroad to prevent re-registration risk. The insured should carry the international accident claim form and Tryg Vejhjælp Europa phone number when driving abroad.

driver_restrictions

The insurance covers the policyholder and anyone using or driving the vehicle with the policyholder's consent. If a person under 25 years uses the vehicle regularly (daily use), they must be registered as a user as this may affect the premium. Drivers under 23 must be pre-notified to Tryg. Constructive modifications such as engine tuning (chip-tuning or horsepower increases), changes to steering, brakes, or body work that affect driving characteristics and require technical inspection must be reported to Tryg immediately. If such changes are not reported and a claim occurs, the right to compensation may be reduced or lapse entirely.

claim_notification_deadline

Damage or accidents that may give rise to a compensation claim must be reported to Tryg immediately (omgående). In case of theft, robbery or vandalism, the claim must also be reported immediately to the police in the country where it occurred. The policyholder must not agree on liability or compensation, or authorise repairs, without Tryg's prior consent. Minor repairs may be initiated if it would be unlawful to continue driving the vehicle. For auto accident insurance, the obligation to pay compensation is conditional on the accident being reported to Tryg as soon as possible.

bonus_malus_rules

For each claim that results in an expense for Tryg, the policy moves back 2 premium steps (præmietrin) from the next main due date relative to the step applicable at the time of the claim. No step reduction applies for: damage caused while the vehicle was at a workshop or service station; damage caused by a known third party who bears full responsibility; damage caused by theft or vandalism by a known perpetrator; claims covered solely under legal defence, foreign rescue, car-loss or auto accident insurance; and damage where Tryg has paid personal injury compensation to the driver of another vehicle under the Road Traffic Act § 103 stk. 1 when the insured vehicle driver is without fault under § 103 stk. 2. When switching vehicles, the no-claims seniority (skadefri anciennitet) transfers to the new vehicle. The policyholder has the right to buy back a claim (tilbagekøb) within one year of being informed of the consequence to avoid the step reduction.
