Medical fees and hospital charges abroad are in most cases billed directly to If by contracted partner clinics and hospitals. If may also issue a payment guarantee (maksusitoumus) in advance when contacted via the 24/7 helpline +358 10 19 19 99.

Geographic scope

FI

Worldwide; continuous traveller cover valid on foreign trips (all countries); valid on domestic trips (>150 km, overnight, leisure) with additional premium. Fixed-term cover valid on foreign trips only. Each single trip max 45 consecutive days under continuous policy.

Unique selling points

  • Medical expenses are covered without any monetary upper limit and with zero deductible — even the most serious hospitalisation or air ambulance repatriation will not lead to out-of-pocket costs.
  • Children and grandchildren under 20 are automatically included in the parent's or grandparent's traveller cover at no extra charge when travelling together, covering both medical and luggage components.
  • Crisis cover (Kriisiturva) is included as standard, providing trip cancellation and interruption reimbursement plus up to 5 sessions of physician-ordered psychotherapy in Finland after natural disasters, terrorism, armed conflict, or violent crimes on the trip.
  • If's 24/7 travel assistance (+358 10 19 19 99) directs insured travellers to contracted partner hospitals and clinics worldwide, enabling direct billing so the insured need not pay out of pocket at point of care.
  • For two consecutive years If was ranked as the best insurer in the Finnish Asiakkuusindeksi customer experience survey, evidencing verified service quality above market peers.

Emergency Medical Treatment

Covered

Emergency medical treatment abroad is covered without monetary limit as part of the traveller cover, including emergency physician consultations, emergency hospital treatment, emergency diagnostic procedures, and all medically necessary and urgent care ordered by a licensed physician. The insurer may direct the insured to a contracted provider; if the insured uses a different provider, reimbursement is limited to what the care would have cost at the contracted provider.

Source

Hospitalisation

Covered

Hospital inpatient treatment costs including daily ward charges are covered without monetary limit as part of the unlimited medical expenses cover under the traveller cover. Coverage applies to hospitalisation arising from a travel illness or travel accident occurring during the trip.

Source

Outpatient Treatment

Covered

Emergency Dental (Acute Toothache First Aid)

Covered

Costs for essential first-aid dental treatment to relieve acute toothache are covered up to EUR 200, provided the pain began and treatment was given at the travel destination. First-aid treatment means opening of an abscess, commencement of root canal treatment, temporary filling, or tooth extraction. Covered even if the toothache arose from biting or from other than a travel illness. Dental disease treatment beyond acute first aid and dental prosthetics are not covered.

Medical Transport (Including Ambulance Flight)

Covered

Medically necessary transport costs including ambulance flights (air ambulance) back to Finland are covered without monetary limit as part of the traveller cover medical expenses. Transport to Finland or another location is arranged and approved by If. Costs for one accompanying person's necessary and immediate travel and accommodation costs are also covered for up to 7 days if the insured is in life-threatening condition. Private car use is reimbursed at max EUR 0.33/km.

Medical Evacuation / Repatriation to Finland

Covered

Medically necessary evacuation or repatriation to Finland (or to the most appropriate location) is covered without monetary limit. If has the right to determine the destination and timing of transport based on medical necessity and cost appropriateness. Pre-approval from If is required before arrangements begin.

Repatriation of Remains

Covered

If the insured dies during a foreign trip, reasonable transport costs of the remains from abroad to Finland are covered, or alternatively equivalent funeral costs at the destination abroad, regardless of cause of death. This benefit does not apply if the insured dies during a domestic trip.

Search and Rescue

Not offered

The policy documents do not contain a specific search and rescue coverage provision. Evacuation costs related to force majeure (natural disaster, armed conflict, terrorism) at the destination are covered separately under crisis cover (section 3.1.6), limited to EUR 2,000 per insured per trip.

Source

COVID-19 Treatment

Covered

COVID-19 qualifies as a travel illness if it manifests during the trip and meets the definition of a travel illness (clear symptoms first appearing during the trip or medically assessed as having begun during the trip). Medical expenses arising from COVID-19 illness during a trip are therefore covered without monetary limit under the standard travel illness cover, subject to general policy conditions. The IPID also lists epidemic at the destination as a covered event under crisis cover (section 3.1.7).

Pre-Existing Conditions (Limited First-Aid Cover)

Conditional

A pre-existing illness that was present before the trip is not classified as a travel illness and is generally excluded. However, if a pre-existing illness worsens unexpectedly and acutely during the trip, acute first-aid treatment costs at the destination are covered for a maximum of one (1) week, provided the worsening was not probable or foreseeable according to general medical knowledge, and the illness was not already under active investigation or treatment (incomplete examinations) at departure. No coverage if an individual exclusion clause for that illness has been added to the policy.

Winter Sports Cover (Basic Recreational Skiing)

Covered

Basic recreational winter sports such as downhill skiing (piste skiing), cross-country skiing, and snowboarding on marked pistes are covered under the standard traveller cover without additional premium. Off-piste skiing (off-piste lasku) is excluded under the sports restriction clause for adults (age 18+) and requires the optional sports cover add-on (Urheiluturva). Speed skiing (nopeus- ja syöksylasku) cannot be covered under any add-on.

Source

Adventure / High-Risk Sports Cover (Optional Urheiluturva Add-On)

Optional

For insured persons aged 18 and over, an optional sports cover add-on (Urheiluturva) removes the sports restriction and extends cover to high-risk sports such as scuba diving, climbing, glacier trekking, aerial sports (hang gliding, paragliding, skydiving in tandem), motor sports, combat sports, off-piste skiing, and strength sports. The add-on is priced according to the sports risk category. A limited set of activities (e.g. guided introductory diving, guided climbing trial up to 4 hours, bungee jumping, tandem paragliding as passenger) is already covered without the add-on. Persons under 18 are fully covered without any add-on.

Pregnancy Complications (First Aid Before Week 29 Only)

Conditional

Treatment costs arising from pregnancy or childbirth are generally excluded. However, acute first-aid treatment costs at the travel destination caused by the pregnancy are covered for up to one (1) week, but only if the pregnancy has not yet reached week 29 at the time of treatment. Costs arising from childbirth, infertility, contraception, assisted reproduction, sterilisation, or foetal examination are not covered under any circumstances.

Personal Liability (Travel Liability Insurance)

Optional

Travel liability insurance (Matkavastuu) covers sudden and unforeseeable personal injury and property damage caused accidentally by the insured to third parties during travel, for which the insured is legally liable. Maximum coverage EUR 170,000. The deductible is chosen by the insured. Liability cover is part of the optional travel luggage insurance (Matkatavaravakuutus), not the core traveller cover.

Source

Legal Assistance / Travel Legal Expenses Insurance

Optional

Travel legal expenses insurance (Matkaoikeusturva) covers necessary and reasonable attorney and court costs arising from use of legal counsel in dispute, criminal, and petition matters related to the trip and travel. Maximum coverage EUR 8,500. Deductible is 20% of costs, minimum EUR 170. Cover is part of the optional travel luggage insurance (Matkatavaravakuutus).

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured should contact If's 24/7 travel assistance (+358 10 19 19 99) as soon as possible in the event of a claim. If has the right to direct the insured to a contracted provider. If the insured uses a self-chosen provider without prior approval, reimbursement is limited to what the treatment would have cost at If's contracted provider. Pre-approval from If is required before organising medical evacuation or repatriation.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured obtains treatment at a provider of their own choice without prior approval from If, If has the right to limit reimbursement to the amount the same treatment would have cost at If's contracted provider. Costs significantly exceeding the normal, generally accepted and locally reasonable level are reimbursed only up to that reasonable level.

Purchase while abroad

The policy documents do not explicitly address purchasing travel insurance while abroad. The continuous travel insurance becomes effective when agreed between the policyholder and If. Fixed-term travel insurance is valid for foreign trips as stated in the policy certificate. Trip cancellation cover requires the policy to be purchased at least 3 days before the trip starts.

Chronic conditions

Chronic (pre-existing) diseases are excluded from travel illness cover. An illness that existed before the trip is not classified as a travel illness. Exception: if a known chronic illness worsens unexpectedly and acutely during the trip, acute first-aid treatment at the destination is covered for up to 1 week, provided the worsening was not probable or expected and no investigations or treatments were ongoing at departure. If a policy-specific exclusion clause for the condition exists, even this first-aid cover is excluded.

Pregnancy

Treatment costs arising from pregnancy or childbirth are generally excluded. An exception applies: acute first-aid treatment costs at the travel destination arising from pregnancy are covered for up to 1 week, but only before pregnancy week 29. Costs from childbirth, infertility, contraception, assisted reproduction, sterilisation, or foetal examination are never covered.

pre_existing_conditions

Pre-existing illnesses are not classified as travel illnesses and are excluded from the main travel illness cover. Limited first-aid cover (max 1 week at destination) applies only if the pre-existing condition worsens unexpectedly and acutely, the worsening was not probable or expected under general medical knowledge, and no investigations or treatments were incomplete at departure. If a specific individual exclusion clause has been noted in the policy certificate for the condition, even first-aid cover is excluded.

coverage_duration_limit

Continuous travel insurance: each single trip or stay abroad is covered for a maximum of 45 consecutive days. A return to Finland of less than 14 days does not break the continuity of the trip if the insured intends to return to the same destination. For trips longer than 45 days, additional fixed-term cover must be obtained. Fixed-term travel insurance is valid for the duration stated in the policy certificate (up to 365 days possible). Health declaration required if the fixed-term policy period exceeds 45 days. Travel illness cover requires that medical care is sought within 14 days of the end of the trip.
