Direct payment

Pohjola can arrange direct billing (a payment guarantee, maksusitoumus) with hospitals and clinics abroad on request via Pohjola Matkahätäpalvelu, particularly for hospital care or expensive treatment; for routine costs the insured normally pays first and claims reimbursement afterwards.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, including domestic trips in Finland more than 50 km from home

The insurance is valid on foreign and domestic trips worldwide, unless otherwise stated on the insurance policy; it is also valid in Finland when travelling more than 50 km in a straight line from home, workplace, place of study or holiday home.

Unique selling points

  • Medical expenses for a travel illness or accident are reimbursed with no euro-denominated upper limit.
  • No deductible applies to any benefit under Matkustajan hoitoturva, including medical, disability and death cover.
  • Children and grandchildren under 15 travelling with the insured are automatically covered under the same benefits at no extra cost.
  • Pohjola Matkahätäpalvelu provides round-the-clock emergency assistance every day of the year in Finnish, Swedish and English.
  • Baggage insurance extends to cover the whole family's belongings when travelling together on the same trip.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

There is no fixed deadline to call, but a payment guarantee (maksusitoumus) must be requested from Pohjola Matkahätäpalvelu before hospital care or expensive procedures; claims must be reported within one year of becoming aware of the loss, and in any case within 10 years of the event.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured refuses insurer-directed transport to Finland when local treatment would be significantly more expensive than equivalent care in Finland, or receives expensive treatment without prior approval, the insurer pays at most the amount equivalent to transport to Finland and treatment there.

Purchase while abroad

Fixed-term travel insurance cannot be purchased or extended while already abroad; it must be bought and paid for before departure from Finland, and at least 3 days before departure to be eligible for cancellation cover.

Chronic conditions

Chronic illnesses that started before the trip are not covered as travel illnesses; only a sudden, unexpected acute worsening during the trip may be covered, and then only as emergency first-aid treatment for up to one week.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, childbirth or termination of pregnancy and related illnesses or complications are not covered, unless there is a sudden, unexpected change in the pregnancy during the trip requiring immediate treatment that was not foreseeable.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Illnesses or symptoms that started before the trip are not travel illnesses; only an acute, unforeseeable worsening during the trip is covered, limited to emergency first-aid treatment for a maximum of one week.

Coverage duration limit

Fixed-term travel insurance is valid for a maximum of three months per trip; medical expenses for travel illness are covered for up to 120 days from the start of treatment, and travel-accident treatment for up to 3 years from the accident.
