Direct payment

Many holiday destinations have medical clinics and hospitals that bill POP Insurance directly when the traveller presents their travel insurance card; otherwise the insured pays the costs and claims reimbursement afterwards.

Geographic scope

Worldwide coverage; a continuous (annual) policy is valid for a maximum of 3 months per continuous trip

Valid worldwide on leisure and business trips. In Finland the policy is valid only when the destination is more than 50 km from the insured's home, workplace, study place or holiday residence, and never between such places regardless of distance.

Unique selling points

  • Medical expenses from a travel illness or accident are reimbursed with no deductible and no euro ceiling.
  • The traveller insurance carries a zero-euro deductible.
  • A dedicated 24/7 POP Emergency Travel Service phone line assists with urgent medical situations abroad.
  • Many holiday-destination clinics and hospitals bill POP Insurance directly, so the traveller often avoids paying up front.
  • Children under 18 travelling with a parent or grandparent are automatically insured without needing a separate policy.

Coverage limits

Medical expenses (illness and accident)

unlimited

Travel medical expenses arising from an acute, unexpected illness or accident during the trip are covered with no deductible and no euro ceiling. Illness-related treatment costs are reimbursed for up to 90 days from the first doctor visit; accident-related treatment costs are reimbursed for up to 3 years from the accident.

Source

Emergency medical treatment

unlimited

Reasonable fees for examinations and treatment by a doctor or healthcare professional are covered without a monetary ceiling, subject to the 90-day (illness) / 3-year (accident) time limits.

Source

Hospitalization

unlimited

Hospital daily treatment fees are covered as part of the uncapped medical expenses benefit, subject to the 90-day (illness) / 3-year (accident) time limits.

Source

Outpatient treatment

unlimited

Outpatient doctor visits, prescribed pharmacy medicines and related tests are covered without a euro ceiling, subject to the 90-day (illness) / 3-year (accident) time limits.

Source

Emergency dental treatment

€200

Sudden toothache first-aid treatment and travel costs are covered up to EUR 200; damage from biting on a tooth/denture is covered up to a separate EUR 200. Dental injury caused by a covered travel accident is instead reimbursed without this cap under ordinary medical-expenses cover.

Source

Transport to treatment during the trip

unlimited

Necessary travel costs incurred during the trip to reach treatment are covered without a ceiling; use of a private car is reimbursed at EUR 0.25/km.

Source

Medical evacuation to Finland

unlimited

Medically necessary transport to Finland (including ambulance flight) and an accompanying escort, plus up to 7 days of travel/accommodation costs for one close relative if the insured is in a life-threatening condition, are covered without a euro ceiling. Cover requires POP Insurance's prior consent before arrangements begin.

Source

Repatriation of remains / burial costs

Covered

If the insured dies during a trip abroad, reasonable transport costs of the deceased to Finland, or equivalent burial costs at the destination, are covered regardless of the cause of death. No numeric ceiling is stated; costs must be reasonable.

Source

Search and rescue

No limit stated

No dedicated search-and-rescue benefit is described in the reviewed terms and conditions or product brochure.

Source

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

No explicit COVID-19 clause appears in the reviewed documents (both predate the pandemic); a COVID-19 illness would presumably fall under the general matkasairaus definition but this is not confirmed by the sources.

Source

Pre-existing illness or injury

Conditional

A sudden, medically unforeseeable acute worsening of a pre-existing illness or injury during the trip is covered only for first-aid-type acute treatment for a maximum of 7 days. Not covered if the worsening was probable/expected, or if investigations/treatment were still ongoing when the trip started.

Source

Winter sports cover

Conditional

Recreational skiing/snowboarding on marked slopes, done to maintain fitness, is covered under the general sports rule. Speed/downhill racing, freestyle skiing, and skiing/riding off marked slopes are explicitly excluded.

Source

Adventure / high-risk sports cover

Excluded

The policy is not valid during a long list of high-risk activities: mountain/wall/rock/ice climbing (except wall climbing with safety gear), glacier trekking, combat/contact sports, weightlifting/bodybuilding, motorsports, sport/scuba/freediving, aviation sports (skydiving, hang-gliding, paragliding, ballooning, base/bungee jumping, wind-tunnel training, ultralight flying), American/Australian football, rugby, lacrosse, downhill skating/cycling, ocean sailing, and expeditions into unpopulated wilderness abroad.

Source

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Pregnancy, childbirth, termination and related complications are excluded, except a sudden, medically unforeseeable acute change in the pregnancy that requires immediate treatment.

Source

Personal liability (Matkavastuuvakuutus)

€200,000

Available within the optional matkatavaravakuutus (baggage insurance add-on), covers personal/property damage the insured or a family member causes to a third party during the trip for which they are legally liable, up to EUR 200,000 per insurance period, with a EUR 200 deductible.

Source

Legal expenses (Matkaoikeusturvavakuutus)

€10,000

Available within the optional matkatavaravakuutus, covers necessary and reasonable legal/court costs of the insured and household members in dispute, criminal and petition matters connected to the trip, up to EUR 10,000, with a 15% deductible (minimum EUR 200).

24/7 emergency assistance

Covered

POP Emergency Travel Service is available 24 hours a day at 0800 950 30 to help with urgent medical needs arising from injury or illness during the trip.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The terms do not set a specific deadline for calling POP's emergency service, but prior consent from POP Vakuutus is required before ambulance-flight evacuation, plastic surgery, a relative's travel to the insured, or crisis therapy is arranged. All claims must in any case be submitted to the insurer within 1 year of the costs arising.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured refuses a medically justified transfer to Finland or another local facility recommended by the insurer, only the costs corresponding to the alternative facility or to Finland-transport-and-treatment are reimbursed. If the 6-month Kela reimbursement application deadline is missed, the Kela share is deducted from the insurer's payment.

Purchase while abroad

The policy can be taken out mid-trip, but the cover begins at the earliest from the moment the insurance is taken out. Trip-cancellation cover additionally requires the policy to have been purchased at least 3 days before the trip starts, and the cancellation reason must not have arisen before that.

Chronic conditions

A chronic or pre-existing illness is not itself covered as a travel illness; only its sudden, medically unforeseeable acute worsening during the trip is covered, and only for up to 7 days of first-aid-type treatment.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, contraception, infertility treatment/investigation and related complications are excluded, except a sudden, unexpected change in the pregnancy that requires immediate treatment and was not medically probable or expected.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

An illness or injury whose symptoms existed before the trip, or whose investigation/treatment was still ongoing when the trip started, is not treated as a new travel illness even if it is diagnosed during the trip. Only a genuinely unforeseeable acute worsening is covered, and then only for up to 7 days of first-aid-type treatment.

Coverage duration limit

A continuous policy is valid worldwide for a maximum of 3 months per continuous trip. Illness treatment costs are reimbursed only up to 90 days from the first doctor visit, and accident treatment costs only up to 3 years from the accident. The policy expires at the end of the insurance period during which the insured turns 80.
